I dont think those were sparks. It was just dirt being blown with the train's speed.

If you watch it in slow-motion (0,25x), you can even see, that there is nor dirt/stones but the sheer wind-mass provided by those "metal hatches/tiles" or what ever you call it in english (sry for that).

How much trouble do you think you'd get in for that? I've gotten heavily chewed out by Amtrak crew for doing this and the conductor tossed my device across the parking lot (no damage was done, it landed in a pile of gravel) the train had stopped at the station and I had placed my device a bit farther up the tracks. Amtrak crew was not at all happy. Ruined my railfanning vibe for a long time.

I actually do this a lot. You just need to make sure the crew doesn't see you. I start mine when it's way down the track and the crew can't see me. I edit the rest out.

depends were you live to we walk along the tracks alot and sometimes we get rides not from amtrak but steel yard and the scrap yard trains the engineers are cool as hell on those

So far Amtrak is the only ones who got on our case too. You put the camera on the track well before any trains are coming and remote control to the gopro using the app. There is a safe way to railfan, but employees know that a lot of people are idiots and have no rail safety sense. Also if their supervisor is around they HAVE to get on your case just to not get in trouble with the boss.

I'll kick in my two cents as someone who works for the railroad. A lot of the guys I work with don't care to much about people being around the railroad as long as they're not messing with anything. I've always been more strict about it thought because my father raised me to never go on the tracks. He was a railroader too and I can only imagine what he saw. The reason walking on railroad tracks is a felony is because you're trespassing on private property, which is a felony. Whenever I see people on or near the tracks that shouldn't be there, I always ask them politely to leave, telling them that it is illegal and dangerous. If they are belligerent or obviously up to something then I would take more serious action. With working for the railroad, unfortunately, it's not if, it's when you see a fatality, and I'd rather keep it as far off as possible. So, please, if you really feel like you have to go on the tracks, which I'd rather you not, use your common sense and be safe.

It's not often I recognize where multi-million view train videos were shot... instantly recognized it as CP Danes outside of Logansport, IN. I've been here a number of times. Good spot for getting a video under a train, most of them really fly by there. ...well, good if your camera's more secure, at least

No a switch is a piece of track that allows the train to go onto different lines they are either hand operated or electronically controled its a bit hard to describe what they look like just google image search railroad switch

That C40-8W (NS 8447) Is a former Conrail Unit! Also nice Supertyfon S3L profile manifold (L), dome back caps, reversed 44 bell (R) and full orifice dowel pins (F) in all bells I think, it has several back caps and might be a mutted horn, which is Rare!
