Home Defense: Shotguns - Target Distance vs. Shot Pattern | Thunder Ranch Training Center

Using a shotgun effectively requires that you know how it works in all scenarios. Clint Smith, President and Director of the world-class Thunder Ranch training center, shares his knowledge of the practical application of shotguns. Despite popular belief, shotguns should be treated as precision tools at close ranges. This drill will let you know what your gun's pattern looks like at various distances and, therefore, how precisely you need to aim at your intended target.
Instructor Rick Staples is using a 500 Thunder Ranch from Mossberg: nssf.it/500thunderranch

FROM CLINT'S WIFE: For all of you asking Clint to clear his throat. In the last 4 years he has had 8 surgeries and being under the knife that long ( 24 hours last year) has really torn his vocal cords up....so this is the way he sounds. For those of you leaving nice comments...thank you....those of you who do not like this video...thats just fine....we hope it helps some of you that need this information. Heidi Smith

Ms Heidi Smith, I recgonize the purpose of having made and posted this video for which I am supportive (& which I think served its purpose). The vast majority viewing it probably won't comment on it. Some small percentage will offer positive comments and some negative. In any case (as far as I know), no one held a gun to their head and forced anyone to watch it. So in line with that, in the future you MAY want to consider "disabling" the ability for viewers to comment. Many videos, especially from companies or institutions, limit KZfaqr's ability to pro-offer comments on their posted videos. I personally don't see this as detrimental to the video posting; the basic tentent remains intact: those that want to watch, will and those that only seek to make negative or snide remarks will have to do so elsewhere.

As a certified home defense instructor, I want to thank Clint for these fantastic videos! Firearm owners and instructors can learn so much from them! In this case, he has dispelled a common myth about the use of shotguns for personal defense. I always keep a tricked-out Mossberg 500 handy but don't expect it to be a crowd control firearm at close range. Keep up the great work, Clint!

we all can be at those ranges with a shotgun, started close built confidence up, got idea od spread at 3 yd 9ft, 5 yard 15ft, and 7yards or 21 feet. all very likely self defense ranges. good practical training. and shows at the end how precise it can be, tho I hope to never need to use it like that, its good to know if you train you can get to that level fairly quickly. stock+long barrel makes shotgun fairly easy to shoot if you have some tips on stance and how to hold it properly to handle recoil

I've not looked at any of the comments. I'll say this: Great practical examples of what to look for IF one must use a firearm in self defense. On my son's 21st b-day I picked him up after he bought a 1911 .45ACP. We banged gongs, falling plates and other steel targets with .22LR, 9mm, 38 Spl on up. Printing for spread on paper AND printing for target reaction are all educational practice at the range. Thanks Clint for this posting!!.

Always learn what you can learn. I learn from Clint. I HAVE to know where all my guns shoot because although I like my sights dead on center, some sights don't adjust for elevation so it's more of a 6 o' clock aim. Since I have a membership at an indoor range and can only shoot slugs, I don't know what my pattern will be for buckshot. Obviously, I'll have to go to an outdoor range. On a side note, thus far I like the bead only sights for home use, like the shotgun used here. Like it too for bird hunting, but for 4 legged, which I never did with a shotgun, then I'd likely want some more accurate sighting.

Okay so you said don’t shoot at 25 yards…. But in the navy I have to shoot the Mossberg 500 using buckshot from 25 yards, 20 yards, 15 yards, and 10 yards. If my goal is to hit center mass for all these distances, would you aim center mass the whole time ? Please help and thank you

Good pounters. I reload shotgun shells. I noticed with a larger pouder charge and low amount of shot. I get a more wider spreed pattern. But with low pouder and Lots of shot , its a tight group. I was really surprised to see such a tight group out to 25 yards.

from what i understand higher velocity deforms the shot more leading to wider patterns where as low velocity dents it around less so it flys streighter

I like your videos. Yes a shotgun is not a blunderbuss for sure. All thow a blunderbuss filled with gravel and broken glass bits would sure do the job. Maby some gun manufacturer should make a auto blunderbuss shotgun in a 10 gauge 15 round 5" magnum ,with a 8" open end. Now that would be the way to go . But my wife would kill me for useing it if we were broken in on.

For my first firearm I purchase a Mossberg 590M Shockwave, and I am in love with it (though we haven't set a marriage date, yet). I haven't had the opportunity to shoot it yet, being that that sort of activity is frowned upon, even in the deep hood in which I reside, and I've been wondering one thing - how should I aim it? Any stance I try that uses the small bead to sight makes it seem like unleashing a shell of 00 buckshot will kick it back into my face. Should I get a laser sight or even a compact flashlight and fire from the hip? Or just fire form the hip unaided?

Personally I think shotguns are the best self defense gun plus the most fun to shoot. Easier to master than a pistol or a carbine, but deadly and much less likely to over penetrate walls and such, depending on your ammo choice. I love my shotty's...all 9 of them! lol
