National Shooting Sports Foundation | NSSF great video! Im sorry if my question seems too ridiculous,I’m new to the sport.I have a truglo 1/4 click MOA scope mounted on a RPR chambered in .308.I zeroed it at 100yards.Someone told me to roll my turrets back to zero.So now if I’m shooting at a 200 yard target do I move my elevation turrets 8clicks up ( or to the 2mark on my turret ) ?

@Ryan Fontenot he was in regiment. Every person assigned to regiment is a Ranger. Any body who is tabbed and NOT assigned to regiment, has simply been to Ranger school. He is a ranger.

So I have been in the US Army for 6 years. I am not going to say that I am some high speed Special Forces Sniper or something, because I am not. I will say however that I have been to the range professionally for 6 years and have always shot expert with Iron sights. So I consider myself a very good shot. That being said, I have heard about MOA from different sources some of them with their SNIPER tabs. I CAN EASILY SAY THIS IS THE ABSOLUTE BEST INSTRUCTION I HAVE EVER BEEN GIVEN ON THE SUBJECT. I feel much more confident on my knowledge of the subject, and my ability to adjust my shots to the target distance. Thanks and Keep it up! Liked and Subscribed.

I learned more in 16 minutes of watching this than I have in all of the hours at the range. Right now I'm shooting a Savage Axis chambered in .223 with a Nikkon M223 4-16X42mm scope. After zeroing at 100 yards, the scope is optimized for a .223 round weighing 55 grains. All I have to do is turn the elevation turret to a known yardage and take the shot. I am hitting quarters @ 300 yards. After seeing this video, I'll be hitting dimes at 300 yards.... Can't wait to hit the range today.

I've hunted and shot for a long time but I've never really used moa because I didn't fully understand it. Ive just had an understanding of my trajectory and have gotten fairly good with it out to about 400yrds. Watching this and with some practice I'm confident I can improve to a full "good" status. Will be checking out more of these videos.

As an LE Sniper/Team leader for 17 years, where pin point accuracy is paramount, I learned real quick to write my 'come-ups' for every distance over 100yds starting with 150,175, 200, etc., up to 600yds. In stressful situations, your distance 'zero' is always there with you. Upon 'zeroing' for 100yds always set your Elevation Turret, and Windage Turret to '0'. Always return it to that after shooting at any distance beyond 100yds. You adjust for wind deflection, and mirage, in real time as needed.

He means to unlock the turret so that when you turn it to zero the dial the scope Lines (reticle) don't move, only the dial moves. That way when you re-engage the scope's torrents you are then dialed into your 100-yard range zero position on the scope turret. Not all scopes allow you to do this. The more expensive scopes allow you to pull the knobs out and disengage the dial from the gears that move the reticle inside the scope. That way you can move the scope dial around without moving the reticles inside the scope tube. When you get the dial to the right position you push in on the turret to re-engage the dial to the gears inside the scope tube. Then when you move the dial the reticle will move. Hope this helps.

This is a great presentation and you deserve an award! I've been in the military for 10 years and I've never had an "Army Proof" explanation like this. Mr Cleckner. I wished to thank you for an excellent straight forward approach to using a scope with a MOA reticle. As a hunter I would typically sight my rifles in using a MPBR (maximum point blank range) zero. This was a simple approach which allowed me to hold dead onto a target and know I could place a bullet onto vitals out to a given distance for my cartridge. However, I recently purchased a new rifle and chose a Burris scope with a 1 MOA spaced reticle. This decision has changed my approach to zeroing my rifle and choosing how to adjust my point of aim over distance. Your video has helped take the guesswork out of which mark on my reticle I should choose at a given distance and why. Once again, I thank you for taking the time to share this information with the public as using a moa scope is not as straight forward to choosing one which has some sort of ballistic dead hold. As always, I agree the markings on a scope should be confirmed with real world shooting.

wouldn’t that be if your rifle is a 1 minute rifle if it was a 2 minute rifle then it would be double?

Jacob’s Passons You can’t find out the bullet drop if you don’t know your rifle. Same for the scope. You can only adjust the correct moa if you 1. know how many klicks 1 moa at your scope is and 2. how many inches you are off target from your zero. You need these two factors first to adjust your whole setup to further ranges. All the numbers he used in the video are his numbers for his setup. He basically showing how to understand your own setup. There is no such thing than 1 or 2 minute rifles or I didn’t get want you meant. For example, he said at 400yards he was 4“ off target wich equals 2 moa wich equals 8 klicks on his scope. If you shoot your own rifle at 400yards you might be 5“ or 6“ or just 3" off target and 2 moa on your scope is maybe only 7 or more than 8 klicks... you get me?

1SGCarter A one minute rifle to by understanding would mean the perfect group at 100 yards is 1 inch, 200 yards is 2 inch etc. A two minute would be 2 inches at 100 yards and 4 at 200 yards. But you probably know more about this then me, i’m just trying to get a basic understanding of this type stuff, it seems pretty intriguing to me

Jacob’s Passons In your scenario the 2 minute rifle just got zeroed at half the range the 1 Minute rifle was zeroed. So your math would be correct on that one. BUT you can adjust both rifles the same way and they will shoot the same (if model and scope is identical). I will post a link how you zero your rifle.

moa=1/60th of a degree...much like minutes on a clock. imagine that between each minute mark, there are 60 notches...these would be your moa. now, it works out that at 100yards, one moa is 1". my scope is about 1/3 moa per click. so if I'm shooting an inch low at 100 yards, and I want my rifle sighted in at 100 yards, I need to come up 3 clicks. like he said though, think in moa first, then think about how many clicks that equals.

+s88m88h: Much like the minutes of a clock, yeah right! Well now dial on 20 Minutes Of Angle elevation and (assuming your rifle is held straight out in front of you, perpendicular, and we'll call that position 12 o'clock) then, at the rate you're quoting, that would place your rifle muzzle at around the 4 o'clock position, which is somewhere 'backwards' over your shoulder, and THAT'S a "physical impossibility!" So it can't be 1/60th of a degree (much like the minutes on a clock) it has to be a LOT smaller than that!

when your rifle is zeroed at 100yards and you make shots at 25 yds and 50 yds do you turn your turrets up like your making distance shots or are you turning down from your zero?

remember if it's zero at 100yards anything before that the bullet is rising (he explained why it's rising)

If you're zeroed in at 100 but want to shoot something at 500, your bullet will go way too low. Which means you're gonna turn the dial up, (to aim the sniper up). But if you're zeroed at 100 and want to shoot at 25 why would you also dial the scope up? Won't you need to come down. The whole reason you're turning the dial up at distance is because of the bullet drop. But the shot at 25 yards will be high

9:34 wierd but true, dependant on the scope setup to some degree. It's always best to try to scope the range on paper before actual shooting.

Tyler, the best thing you can do is experiment for yourself. Take your rifle to the range and shoot it a zero, then dial it up and down at 25 yards. I think you will be surprised by the outcome.

So basically 1 MOA is 4 clicks if your scope says 1/4 adjustment or 8 1/8 clicks to equal 1 MOA

Ilyas Adak is it mean so: my scope zero on 50m، now if i want shooting at 100m i need 2 clicks? I always using mil dot shoots at the different range cos I really don’t understand how to adjust turrets..

Only at 100 yards. 1/4 MOA is 4 clicks at 100 yards to move the POI about 1 inch. but at 200 yards to move the POI 1 inch you only need to adjust the dial 2 clicks. Because at 200 yards 1 moa = 2".

Great video, but, there is a glaring technical problem at 4:47 that is important enough to a beginner's understanding of ballistics that it needs to be pointed out. Ryan describes the steepening of the bullet's trajectory as being solely the result of the bullet decelerating, and thus being exposed to gravity longer. Actually, the acceleration of gravity is the dominating force in the steepening of the trajectory. In the first 1/10 of a second of flight, gravity will push the bullet down 1.9 inches, no matter how fast the bullet is traveling. In the next 1/10 of a second, gravity will push the bullet yet another 5.8 inches down, for a total of 7.7 inches--no matter how fast the bullet is traveling. In the third 1/10 of a second, gravity will push the bullet down another 9.6 inches, for a total of 17.3 inches--no matter how fast the bullet is traveling. The acceleration effect of gravity is HUGE compared to the time exposure you describe. This sounds nit-picky because it's not germane to an explanation of minutes of angle... But this will be an early foundational video for many aspiring shooters, who are too early in their shooting careers to allow incorrect fundamentals to be implanted in their intuition about trajectory. Hands down.. No finer explanations on being a better shooter. Zero time wasted on needless irrelevant filler conversation. Right from the very start you had better be paying attention. Quick discussion with attention to detail . I watch this repeatedly. Mr. Cleckner is Flat Out , the Best.!
