I have viewed this performance once again and i caught chills because it reminded me of the style of shows we put on back in 1991. THAT YEAR WAS REFERED TO AS THE STEAM ROLL TOUR. We litteraly would roll tge field up after we finished our performance lavibg the other band to march on rocks. BEHOLD!
@woolly656 жыл бұрын
Yeah... they really steam rolled over bands like VSU, VUU, Hampton, ECSU, Fayetteville State, NCCU, Bowie State etc... NSU had no competition back then. The Legion wasn't in the MEAC in 1991. I lived in Norfolk from 1993-1996 when Alcee Walker was the BD and to be honest, I wasn't impressed at all, but you guys were MUCH better than the previous schools I named. The band exploded to new heights when Dr. Sanford and arranger Paul Adams took over.

Like other years in the CIAA, 1991 was a phenomonal year for the Legion. The Legion always had that killer instinct to survive in any konference.

I’m always surprised that Booker T. Washington high school is right across the street a program that was historical a force of its own and I don’t ever seem to see them get a band director who graduated from Norfolk State. I never see a performance of the Legion at Booker T. When I marched for Booker T, some of my best moments where when members from NSU came over to help us. Is this relationship still thriving?

@woolly656 жыл бұрын
Although they sound very good, they can handle SU's sound. Until you have heard SU live there is no comparison. Remember NSU weren't anything to talk about until Dr. Sanford and arranger Paul Adams took over the program. they were both SU grads.
@koolkharisma52985 жыл бұрын
@@woolly65 Part 1) False. NSU's prestige does not begin with Dr. Sanford & Paul I Adams. Even though their legacy is not as long as other legacy programs such as (SU, JSU, and FAMU) the Spartan Legion's prestige started in the mid 70's after Norfolk State became an independent institution from Virginia State University in 1969. Through the vision and direction of Mr. Emery Fears a new identity was kreated for the band that was already their, that gave it a more military/ warrior style. The school was in the Central Intercollegiate Conference (CIAA), an athletic konference the band was on top of but did not receive much exposure. However at times they did play MEAC schools such as Howard, Morgan, Bethune, and A&T.
@koolkharisma52985 жыл бұрын
@@woolly65 Part 2) During the years of 1996-1997 NSU entered the MEAC Konference under the direction of Alzie Walker ( a Emery Fears protege) who took over the program after Fears retired in 1991. The following year Dr. Sanford and Paul I. Adams took over the program. This would not be Adams first round at NSU. He worked there under the leadership of Emery Fears in the 70's. During this period he wrote the school's signature song, "Behold", that honors the students, faculty, administration, alumni and friends of the university.

@@woolly65 Part 3) I've listened to both bands live. They have different sounds. Southern goes for power. One SWAC band director told me they are the loudest band he has ever heard. Norfolk goes for scholarly musicianship/ musical klarity/ and kontrolled power. I enjoy both sounds.
