The indignity of being taken to the scrap yards instead of under their own power for these proud beasts of burden that served us so well for so long is just too heartbreaking. Thanks for documenting this last chapter.

I was lucky enough to be working on site at the workshops before,during and after these locos came in for this auction. Sad to see them end like that.

Sad to see so many of these old work horses end up at the scrappers, I guess that's what happens when you reach the end of your economic life. Thanks for sharing Bevan.

Thanks so much for sharing mate. As the others have said it's a very sad sight indeed. This was at a time i mistakenly had other interests as my priority, so i never even knew it was happening. Thanks again dude.

19:42 really disturbed me… the silence of it all, the crap condition and the stripping and the broken glass windows, and then the zooming into the sea of dead ALCo locomotives made me tear up a bit…

Very detailed footage of their last moments, thanks for sharing.Just curious, was there any particular reason why so few of the Mk 1 44's survived? I guess it was a matter of just being in worse condition than the mk 2's? Interesting to note a few of the survivors at the Cardiff auctions namely, 4458, 4468, 4473, 4502, 4464 (i think). Just curious though, anyone know what became of 4468 after the Canberra ARHS Liquidation sale?

Hey Bevan , many thanks for getting these clips , this IS the sadest video of yours that I've seen so far , I shed tears as these once were great loco's & it's so sad to see them end up like this after all of those many years of great work , I wish that I had plenty of money to save quite a few of these loco's for preservation. Visit my website ( Kev's Workshop ) & contact me via my "Contacts" page. Kevin.

A sad sight to see indeed........considering the many years of great service these old Alco loco put in, thanks heaps for sharing this clip bwDVD. BTW, I don't suppose you know roughly, how many trips they did moving them all to auction and scrap yards?
@bwDVD9 жыл бұрын
The locos were moved to Cardiff over in numerous trips and light engine movements in the months before the auction. All the trips after the auction are shown in the video.

We've had two locomotive scrapings in a few years in Victoria. The first one was former branchline loco's Y122, T374 and T396. This was carried out in Geelong. The second was a few months ago which was the saddest one. Former V/Line and Pacific National loco's A73, 77, 81 and 85 were chopped up at the broad gauge turntable in Dynon (Melbourne).
@robbiewales30077 жыл бұрын
Sadly the same thing is happening in Victoria. For example three first generation loco's; T396, T374 and Y122 got cut up for scrap last year. At this stage some of the remaining stored loco's are looking at a similar fate.

at 1:26 4824 judging by the picture looks like she have had a recent paint job, but even been a Mk 1 of the 48 class she went would've got the chop straight away (and she did!), it does make you wonder if she was parked healthy or not

So late to the comment section, as I can see the vid was uploaded in 2014. Absolutely heartbreaking. Does anyone know what the cost to purchase a 48 class loco would be approx?

What is the reason for cabs in both ends.of some of these Ausi loco's ... a train only needs one cab ??

Easier to switch ends and give the driver better view and control.

This is the first time I've seen this video, and it makes me mad that such wonderful old workhorses like these could be just scrapped without a blink of an eye. Surely there must have been a few preservation societies willing to take on the task of restoration, because it is truly a sad sight.

It is the coal used to produce electrical power that is the deadly culprit.
