Does 1 John 3:9 teach that believers do not sin?
The answer might seem obvious, but by the way many translation render this verse, such as the NIV...
"No one who is born of God will continue to sin, because God’s seed remains in him; he cannot go on sinning, because he has been born of God."
... You could be led to believe that this verse teaches believers cannot sin.
Even many preachers misunderstand the way the present tense of this verse is used in Greek and end up poorly exegeting the text!
So in this video I walk through 3 clues in the text to help us understand Johns argument.

I remember talking about this in the BMA cohort a few months back, and the whole class was struggling with how to exactly interpret it, given the fact (which you point out) that John assumes that believers will commit sins at some point. I agree with the "nomic" sentiment. Thanks for addressing this Darryl! And for explaining in depth.

Lovely job Darryl! I appreciate you going through the passage and demonstrating how Greek can be used in exegesis. I wrote on this recently and the outcome I had was pretty much the same as yours, although contextually my emphasis focused onto what seems to be the broader - and repeated - theme of sin, which is hating brother or sister. i.e. the sin John really doesn't like is hatred within the family of God. This all being tied to having an enacted and "alive" confessional accuracy concerning Christ (1 John 4:9-21). Excited to be able to send this to friends looking for good examples of carrying out exegesis. 👌

Very enlightening! I never thought this very could be translated as practicing sin and now your explanation of John’s declaration of sin being contrary to the new nature of a believer makes good sense! Dr. Bob Wilkin has a somewhat similar explanation of this greek verb.

The way I have been using to understand verses that seem to contradict other verses on the same subject like (sin/sinning) is to read all the related scriptures that are the same subject of (sin/sinning) and understand it without it contradicting other subject scriptures. Because if we think the subject discussed contradicts itself then we know we're not understanding it correctly.

Probably one of thee most difficult passages for Christians to read in the Bible. Especially if we take the passage to mean, keep on sinning or sinning as a habit. And as a young Christian, it can be a stumbling block as a "pet sin" might make someone doubt they are even a follower of Jesus. You want to please God out of Love and not out of obligation, and you struggle, but at the same time the flesh is always weak. You begin to wonder if you actually have given your heart to Jesus, and had the beginning of regeneration.

Brother Darryl, Thank you for this very informative video. Your videos have been a great blessing to me in helping me to acquire a better understanding of both the semantic verbal aspect and pragmatic contextual view of Greek Grammar. I am a pastor and a Greek enthusiast, so let me share what I believe are a few insights into 1 John 3:9. But first, let me say that our theological views, combined with our knowledge of Greek Grammar, will greatly influence how we translate 1 John 3:9 and other similar verses. Therefore, if we believe that our salvation is stative rather than progressive, we will translate this verse according to that view. But, if we believe that our salvation is progressive (to include justification, sanctification, glorification and the birthing process of the "born again" experience) we might translate this Scripture accordingly. I hold to this latter view. Here's my reworking of the KJV with some additional comments. 1 John 3:9 Anyone who is being born of God does not practice sin; For his seed remains in him: and he cannot practice sin because he is being born of God. (I have not found this progressive translation of the word γενναω in any version of the Scriptures. Could the translator's theologies be a part of the problematic issue)? BEING BORN OF GOD God's intention is to take believers from the starting line of our salvation to the finish line so that we might qualify for the Crown of Life and the right to rule and reign with Christ forever. This journey is a process by which God is continually birthing His Son in us and at the same time He is progressively creating (birthing) us into the image of His Son. This is a double creative work of God's Grace. Paul writes in Galatians 4:9 "My little children, of whom I travail in birth again until Christ be formed in you". In this passage we can see that God is progressively creating His Son in these believers through Paul's travailing intercessions, teachings and the work of the Holy Spirit. However, these Christians were hindering God's work of continuing saving Grace that would eventually lead them to Spiritual maturity. In Ephesians 2:8-10 Paul writes, "For by grace you are being saved through faith...for we are His workmanship being created in Christ Jesus unto good works...". And in 2 Cor. 4:18 Paul writes, "But we all with open face beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord. Notice the progressive elements of 2 Cor. 4:18 as the writer highlights the believer's relationship to the Glory of God: "...being changed from glory to glory even as by the Spirit of the Lord." In this Scripture the Holy Spirit is highlighting the progressive changes in the life of the believer as God takes him from the starting line of Glory to the finish line of Glory. We do not have to wait until we die and go to Heaven to experience the Glory of God. As we wait in the Presence of God beholding His Face as in a mirror, His Glory is reflected back to us and we are, therefore, progressively changed from glory to glory until we reach the finish line of glory. And, it is only at the finish line that we can qualify for the Crown of Life. We can see from these verses God's progressive double work of creation in the life of the believer. He is progressively creating His Son in us and at the same time He is progressively creating us into the into the image of His Son. If we practice sin, however, it will hinder this birthing process keeping us from the finish line and the right to rule and reign with Christ forever. 1 John 3:9 is not teaching us that we are incapable of sinning or even in our inability to continue to practice sin, (or that's okay to sin - but only a little). It is teaching us that sin will keep us from obtaining spiritual maturity and the right to the Crown of Life. Sin can also lead us back into the depths of iniquity to the point of even losing our salvation. (I was once a Calvinist, but God has shown me grace and mercy in that I have repented of believing and teaching this false doctrine of unconditional eternal security). We must not continue to practice sin - there are consequences for doing so. Yes, there is 1 John 1:9 for when we do sin. But, shall we continue in sin that grace might abound? Let it never be. A DEEPER LOOK INTO 1 JOHN 3:9 The word "born" (γενναω) is used twice in verse 3:9. The first use of the word is a Perfect, Passive Participle and the second use of the verb is a Perfect, Passive, Indicative. Therefore, by implementing the semantic imperfective aspect and pragmatic contextual rules of Greek Grammar, I would translate the Perfect Tense as being continuous in action. (Whether or not one sees the lexeme "born" as being stative or progressive combined with our theological pragmatic contextual values would determine how this verse should be translated). The Perfect Tense is also telling us to take a closer look: examine the details; this is very important; don't miss this! So, to reaffirm, I would translate this verse in view of the belief that includes the overall progressive work of the believer's salvation. And, by applying both Greek and my theological progressive views to this verse my "pragmatic contextual" beliefs would confirm and not negatively override a progressive translation of "γενναω". (I call the negative, "pragmatic contextual" unbelief). We are BEING born of God. I WAS saved at the age of 8; I AM progressively continuing in that salvation today with the HOPE of qualifying for the Crown of Life in the future. Amen! THE CROWN OF LIFE The Crown of Life is the Martyrs Crown. The early Church taught that there were two kinds of martyrs: (1) The red martyrs and (2) the white martyrs. The red martyrs were killed for the cause of Christ and their blood was shed. The white martyrs were the Christian's who completely died to self so that Christ might be completely formed within and thus, accordingly, fully live His Life in and through them. And, some Christian's became both kinds of martyrs so that they might obtain a better resurrection. So, in review, God is progressively creating His Son in us and at the same time creating us into the image of His Son so that we might reach Spiritual maturity, gain the Crown of Life and thus rule and reign with Christ throughout all eternity. But, the unrepentant practice of sin will hinder this process and rob us from entering into our eternal destiny. James 1:12 KJV Blessed is the man that endureth temptation; for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord hath promised to them that love Him. How much do we love God? How much do we love others? These are two major keys to obtaining the Crown of Life! We are to progressively grow in love until WE BECOME LOVE! We will then, have inherited the Crown of Life and at the end of our earthly journey, be given the right to step into our eternal destiny.

I have heard this teaching before and concur 100%. The translators do no justice to this passage . There is also the New Nature view or interpretation that says there is no sin In Christ therefore the believers New Nature never sins. While this is true because of our Union with Christ apparently John wasn’t alluding to this here in 1 John 3.

When I was in high school, I discussed this exact passage with a friend of mine. We were discussing it in the context of can believers lose their salvation, a topic on which we did not agree. I won't get into the entire conversation, nor will I share the exact thought we had at the time, but before I hung up the phone, I told my friend "I think we just invented a new cult." It is indeed a difficult to understand passage - at least in English.

I don't actually seeing it as a loss of salvation, but a proving you never had it. But it definitely makes you feel uneasy about your place in Christ. I don't think John intended to do that actually. In fact out of all the Apostles, John was my favorite as his simple Gospel message was "simple".

@@bma So what it means is that if a believer does anything at all, in the world, Like if he is on a bowling league , or playing any sports, That is called a sin . If he or she has anything at all to do with the worldly desires They are sinning and will go to hell? Because some teaches that we are not of the world nor the things of this world , Even though we are in the world,

Having been thrown out of multiple churches (2, at least) over this doctrine, I think I know what I'm talking about. I've done my homework. An alcoholic knows that he can't "sin" a little bit and be okay. Most church people haven't hit bottom and so they read the bible very differently from folks who have. Most church people are convinced that they sin with every breath they take and so it is indeed IMPOSSIBLE not to sin (or they'd have to stop breathing). But this is an attitude of condemnation - that everything is a sin and so you have to keep sinning until you die. Alcoholics don't look at life like that. Jesus said, "Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whosoever committeth sin is the servant of sin." - John 8:34. The NIV used to say, "I tell you the truth, Everyone who sins is the slave of sin." (I don't know what the NIV says today because it keeps changing, so I stopped reading it.) But the meaning is the same. Sin is an addiction - like alcoholism. Not every sin is everybody's sin. Murder is a sin but I don't know a lot of people addicted to murder. Lying is a sin and I've known several people who can't stop lying. Bottom line, Jesus and the apostles understood sin to be an addiction. No addict can just engage in a little bit of their addiction. That's called "falling off the wagon". With that definition in mind then, 1 John 3 comes into clear focus. 1 John 3:5 - And ye know that he was manifested to take away our sins; and in him is no sin. Until you've hit rock bottom, you don't know what a breath of fresh air that verse is. Until you're okay with sinning a little bit all the time, you cannot appreciate the good news of that proclamation. You can indeed stop destroying your life (and the lives of those around you) with your sin of choice. God has made a way to save us from our addiction. I could write a book on this subject because I've gone around the block with my betters so many times over this. Suffice to say that if you've never connected with the fact that your sin is an addiction, then you cannot use this aspect of the gospel. Jesus came to call SINNERS to repentance. If your sin isn't such a big deal then you cannot repent of it. If you cannot repent then you cannot be saved and you will go through your life being okay with denying your absolute need for the One who saves to the uttermost. Hebrews 7:25 - Wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them. Jesus is the Savior and His definition of sin is not your definition of sin. Until we align our definition with His, we will not be able to grasp the height, depth, and breadth of His salvation. Confession (i.e. saying the same thing as God) is made unto salvation. Until you connect with God's definitions, you can never make confession (say the same thing) unto salvation.

I’m going to be honest obviously because I’m not going to lie to you. I get the premise of your video but it almost had a cafeene fueled vibe to it. There was so much said and so much about grammar and certain words which I know is important but my mind was spinning at this video and I didn’t get much from it. I’m not sure if the audience felt the same way but I did. In a nut shell I feal like you were trying to say is that our new spirit in Christ is redeemed and that he remains in you so you cannot sin in spirit! However the present flesh that our spirit dwells in still is sinning and wants to sin. Our spirit wars against the flesh and our flesh wars against the spirit. But the redeemed part that really counts,….. our spirit cannot sin because we remain in Christ but we do sin in the flesh. Much love to you brother I sure hope I did not come across as rude that is not my intention I’m just giving you honest feedback.

To those commenting below who are advocating loss of salvation and to those struggling with losing Salvation: John is simply saying that the reason you sin as a Believer is because in those moments you don't know Him or see Him. This is because you aren't abiding in Him continuously all the time. These are regarded as "moments", hence the present tense. If you do wind up sinning you have an advocate named Jesus on your behalf. Secondly, the commands of God are told in chapter 5 that being only one: to Believe in Christ. Thirdly, you can't compare the abide in me passage in John with the abide usage in 1 John because John is a conversation happening before the Cross and Forgiveness of Sin and 1 John is in regards to post Resurrection and even Pentecost after Sin has been dealt with.

No way! So you unwittingly admit John 15:1 through 6 teachers loss of salvation. Instead of fighting the futile battle against John 15 clear teaching, you just relegated to the past and not applicable to today. That is weak and wicked Those who will not consent to the words of the Lord Jesus christ, are proud and know nothing according to Paul and first Timothy chapter 6. Believe the words of the Lord Jesus Christ!

the niv version is corrupt and says differently from the kjv. though they sound similar, the niv changes the word. its subtle, but the word the niv uses sounds like its saying that "if we are saved, we will no longer want to sin or sin period." but the actual verse says that "anyone born of god is not guilty of sin." the flesh will still sin (though we should try our best to avoid it as much as possible.) but the spirit creature, born of god, cannot sin itself.

I was born once of flesh and blood. (John 3:6) Flesh and blood shall not inherit the kingdom of God. (1 Corinthians 15:50, John 3:3) My flesh serves the law of sin. (Romans 7:25) I was born again of the Spirit, of God. (John 3:6, John 3:7, John 3:8, 1 Peter 1:23) He who is born of the Spirit inherits the kingdom of God. (John 3:5) In my mind I serve the law of God, the law of faith. (Romans 7:25, Romans 7:22) He who is born of God does not commit sin, and cannot sin, and sins not because he is born of God, and his seed remains in him. (1 John 3:9, 1 John 5:18) Our outward man indeed shall perish, yet our inward man is renewed day by day. (2 Corinthians 4:16) Our inward man delights in the law of God, our outward man serves the law of sin in our members.

Nonchalantly says we know that we continue to sin after becoming a Christian? So you can't see the truth of what he is saying from 1:6 through 2:1? You honestly take 1:8 out of context even in light of 1:9? He is giving an example of believers who walk in darkness and those who walk in the light. If we walk in sin, we walk in darkness if we walk in the light then we are completely forgiven of sin and CLEANSED OF ALL UNRIGHTEOUSNESS, which means SIN. Once you understand the first chapter then can you take a real honest position on chapter 3. Many believers who call themselves Christians do walk in sin, which is darkness. There are two kingdoms that Jesus and Paul and John and Peter all talked about. The kingdom of light and the kingdom of darkness. These two kingdoms are real kingdoms. They have judges and rules and laws that if you cross from one kingdom to another it is either by committing sin which is Satan's domain or you walk in pureness through confession and continual repentance through the power of the Holy Spirit. If we don't continue connected to the vine we will end up being overtaken by the flesh, it is a war. If we walk as He walked then we overcome sin in the flesh, by the power of the Spirit, just as he did, thus walk free from sin and walk in the light. If this is your gospel then you need to make it right or face the consequences of 2 Peter 2 which talks about believers who lost their way, stumbled in sin and taught doctrines that allow sin in the church, and deceive young believers who have recently escaped. Just read it. We need to have a full understanding of the rules of the kingdom of darkness and the kingdom of light to fully understand the scriptures. There are principalities in the heavens who accuse you and me if we sin. There is literally a court that holds each person accountable and those principalities that deceive us into sin are trying to keep us out of our eternal inheritance. Sin is why Jesus had to die so He could bring us into the light. If we don't recognize that then we don't know him.

Go figure what these verses mean by impossible: Luke 17:1: “He said to the disciples, “It is impossible that no occasions of stumbling should come, but woe to him through whom they come.” Matthew 7:18: “A good tree cannot produce evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree produce good fruit.” Hebrews 6:4: ἀδύνατον (impossible): “For it is impossible in the case of those who have once been enlightened, tasted the heavenly gift, become partakers of the Holy Spirit,”

when you put this in context we see he is talking about unconfessed sin for if you say you have no sin you are a liar and the truth is not in you but if you confess your sins he is faithful and just to forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness if you dont live a life of confessing sins you are not born again the holy spirit in you sanctifying you will check you when you sin (and we all do) then we are broken and contrite and confess our sin if you can just go along without the holy spirit checking you that shows you have never truly been born again

"Having sin" is not the same as "committing sin". Everyone "has sin" and everyone "has sinned". If I didn't have sin then I would cease needing a Savior FROM sin. God make sure that His plan of salvation ALWAYS includes His agency. So when the apostle writes: 1 John 1:8 - If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. He is NOT saying that we need to expect to NEVER be saved from our sins. Jesus was named Jesus BECAUSE "He shall save His people FROM their sins." Jesus saved me FROM my sins - not IN my sins. In fact, presuming that Jesus saves us in our sins is an abuse of Him. Romans 6:1 - What shall we say then shall we continue in sin that grace may abound? God forbid! The expectation to never be saved FROM one's sin but instead to be saved IN one's sin is to miss the point of Jesus' sacrifice and the gift of the Holy Spirit.

Exactly. Matthew 1:21, Romans 6 & Jesus's words in John 8:34-36 could not be any clearer. Even the NAME "Jesus" means "savior", "loosener", "rescuer", "deliverer". From what? From SIN! Hence Romans 6. It's silly that people are so influenced by Roman Catholicism that they think that being saved means being saved from Hell and it's all about our death and what happens after we die 🤦🏻‍♀️. It's first and foremost about our life NOW and us being the children of God (John 1:12-13) NOW and showing Christ to the world NOW (2 Corinthians 13:5, John 14:16-17, Galatians 5:22-23...) i.e being CHRISTians (LITTLE CHRISTS).

@@leenieledejo6849 - When this truth was revealed to me, I was floored by it. I had converted from Catholicism to Christianity and I went to the church of Christ. But, surprisingly, church of Christ doctrine does not teach salvation FROM sin, rather salvation IN sin. EVERY prayer includes "Forgive me of my sins". It's very Old Testament praying. Jesus taught us to pray "forgive us as we forgive those who trespass against us" but to constantly be eating dust in front of the King is just too much to take. I am not a sinner. I am saved from my sins. The only time Paul ever called himself a sinner was in reference to what he was before Jesus saved him. 1 Tim. 1:15 - This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners; of whom I am chief. If you're constantly sinning all the time then in what sense are you saved from those things? Romans 6 talks about being made free from sin and free from the Law of sin (Mt. Sinai). Catholicism keeps you in the cycle of sin in order to keep you bound to the clergy, through which you receive absolution. This insertion of clergy between God and man is a throwback to Old Covenant religion. It keeps the clergy in tall cotton while the laity is kept destitute. Freedom from the sin that used to destroy us should be touted as one of the selling points of the gospel - because it is indeed good news. But no Evangelical preacher worth his paycheck would ever tout that as a benefit of knowing Christ.

(And yep, many so-called "Christians" are not so by definition - John 1:12-13 - and are actually church-ians who are effectively under the Old Covenant and live, speak and act - and pray! - like people under the Old Covenant).

1 John 3:9 teaches the believer "cannot sin", not even once! Please let me explain. Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God. 1 John 3:9 Can we all agree that the believer is created in the image of God? We are body, soul, and spirit (1 Thess. 5:23-24). Which part of the believer is "born of God"? It is our *spirit* that is born of God according to Jesus in John 3:6. Our spirit is made "one" with Christ (John 14:20, 17:21-23, 1 Cor. 6:17). It is our spirit, and only our spirit which the bible considers saved, not the flesh. And ye know that he was manifested to take away our sins; and *in him is no sin* 1 John 3:5 John is speaking of a spiritual truth. The believer is made *spiritually* one with Christ and *in Him is no sin* so whosoever is *born of God* (the spirit of the believer) cannot sin because he has been made one with Christ and in Him is no sin. In understanding truths of scripture we have to distinguish between that which is physical, and that which is spiritual in this dispensation of grace. The believer is not saved physically at this time, but will be "changed" when Christ returns (1 Cor. 15;50-52). Only the spirit is currently "translated into the kingdom of His dear Son", not the physical being which "profitteth nothing" (Col. 1:13, John 6:63). This is why I use the KJB and no other. It was this very passage of scripture from 1 John 3 which showed me the importance of using the KJB. It correctly uses the Greek word "poieo" which means not even a single act of sin can be performed by that which is "born of God".

@@teravega yes, and I made my comment (based on what the passage actually teaches) because he is complicating something that isn't complicated. All anyone needs to know about this passage is it has absolutely *nothing* to do with the mortal man which was born of Adam, and has *everything* to do with the spirit which is "born of the Spirit" (John 3:6). The flesh (mortal man) is born of the flesh, and the spirit is born of the Spirit. Is John speaking of that which is born of the flesh, or of the Spirit in 1 John 3:9? The spirit "born of God" is made perfect in Christ, and cannot sin, because "in Him is no sin". Again I ask, is it the flesh, or the spirit being identified in verse 9? Whosoever is *born of God* doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God. 1 John 3:9 Which does *Jesus* say is born of God? Flesh, or spirit? That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. John 3:6 Our spirit in Christ "cannot sin" because we are in Him, and He in us. This is how God "justifies the ungodly" in our flesh (Romans 4:4-5) I in them, and thou in me, that they may be *made perfect* in one; and that the world may know that thou hast sent me, and hast loved them, as thou hast loved me. I actually noticed that as well. The KJV is the only one that did not ADD continue sinning or habitual sin like the other versions. If we are to believe that we have inherited Jesus' righteousness, than it would actually make sense it would say we CANNOT SIN, not even ONE SIN. Because that would sully a perfect righteous record that MUST remain spotless for our entrance into the Kingdom of Heaven. We ONLY get into Heaven because Jesus took our sin record, and replaced it with ours. So no matter how much sin we do after we accept Jesus (whether willful sin or not) it cannot be held to our record. It does say we are chastised by God as children, but it never specifies what that is. Some are tormented spiritual, as we feel really bad. Others are calmly reminded of what price was paid and God's wishes.

This verse says exactly what it means. 1 John 3:9 Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God. The new nature, born of God, will never sin. It cannot sin. When a Christian sins, it is his/her OLD nature doing it. That nature has been crucified with Christ, and will meet its final demise at the point of physical death or the Rapture. This will leave the new nature, which has never sinned, free to enter Heaven. This is why Jesus told Nicodemus, "Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God." He needs a brand new nature.

@filip szalbot Truly the first person to speak sounds right until the cross examination starts. I'm thinking the advocate facilitates the metamorphosis from the old sinful nature to the new incorruptible born from above nature. It's a process rather than an on off switch to get to a complete change of mind to then know the will of God, what is pleasing to him and is perfect.

It is a one-time event. Since I live in Ecuador, I use the Reina Valera 1960 translation, and the Spanish translation is even clearer: Juan 5:24 De cierto, de cierto os digo: El que oye mi palabra, y cree al que me envió, tiene vida eterna; y no vendrá a condenación, mas →→ha pasado←← de muerte a vida. The verb tense is clearly completed action, something that has already taken place.

Isn’t it possible the new creation in Christ does not sin and always desires what is right but the flesh, body of death, frequently falls to temptation so we sin in the flesh and need Christ. To be absent from the body, and sin, is to be present with the Lord.

First John 5 verse 18 clears it up for us: "He that is begotten of God keepeth himself" meaning as a Christian we are in control of our body. Paul confirms this in Romans 6 verse 12 "Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body." In other words, we have a choice whether to sin or not. A non-Christian will continue sinning because they don't have the nature of Christ within them.

Your final point seems to be contradictory to the context of these verses. It's quite clear, even in the Greek, that the author is trying to explain that the key to overcoming sin is to abide (remain) in Chirst. In Galatians 5 it even talks about our two natures and the command to feed the spirit, not the flesh so as not to sin. The Bible talks about power over sin and being transformed. There's no where in the new testment that says we wouldn't be any different than the rest of the lost world of unbelievers. Sorry, but none of your explanation of the Greek seems to contradict the notion that the author is making a distinction between a habitual continuation of sin vs sin we will occasionally do. It appears to me your contorting the greek to fit your narrative. Just my observation.

People love to call God a liar. First off, John can say nothing if it is not for the Holy Spirit teaching him. Secondly, not sining is as easy as knowing right from wrong. James 4:17 King James Version 17 Therefore to him that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin. I went to the bar with my friend and when my wife asked me where I went, I lied to her and said I was somewhere that she would approve of. Where I sinned was even though I know that it is wrong to lie, I lied despite knowing the truth. What is the Holy Spiirt and what is one thing He does? He is the Spirit of truth and as the Spirit of truth, leads us to all truth, therefore if the seed of the Holy Spirit dwells within a born again, born of God man this man will love truth and will continue in well doing. Show me one Sxripture that says it is impossible us to not sin. In fact, if God knows it is impossible for us to quit sinning, why tell us over and over again to stop sinning? Let God be true and every man a liar.

James 4:17 King James Version 17 Therefore to him that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin. For example, I broke my wife's vase, I can either lie to her and tell her it was my son or I can tell her the truth. To lie is to suppress the truth so that the truth does not come to light. Yet if I tell the truth, it is because I am not ashamed of the truth coming to light. How do you prevent having to lie? You do not walk in a way that you would have to lie. You believe that you can not stop sinning, two things can be the cause, either you remain in your flesh and walk after the things of the flesh or you have come to believe the fallen church today that your present and future sins are forgiven which allows you to be okay to continue in sin. NO WHERE IN THE ENTIRE BIBLE TELLS YOU THAT YOU CAN NOT STOP SINNING! Yet there is a place that says if you say you have no sin, you are a liar, but I am not saying I don't have sin because I know that sin is in my flesh(Romams 7:18, and 1 John 1:8), but I believe God and I hold every thought that comes in captive to the obedience to Christ. 2 Corinthians 10:5 If I come to any sinful thought(s), I rebuke all of them and do what is right. If the lust of my eyes catches the glimpse of a woman's breasts or butt, rather than lusting over her, I immediately rebuke sin and turn away. That's sin in my flesh still, but myself holding captive these thoughts to obeying righteousness.

I agree wholeheartedly! Romans 6:1-2 What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound? God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein? Just because sin after salvation doesn't condemn us, doesn't mean it's irrelevant. Sin brings suffering, not only to the one who sins, but it always affects everyone around as well. Not to mention the bad testimony...

To my eye Moses defined what the law was and sin is transgression of that law. (Broadly speaking) Here is the problem, Christians say the law was abolished. So if there is no law then there is no sin. But we see that there is a penalty for sin outside of Christ. So what law do we currently have?

These two verses tell us that if we are not completely at peace about doing something, knowing God is happy with it; or if we NEGLECT to do something we know we ought to do--that is sin to us. I don't know about you, but those two verses tell me that I still sin WAY too much. That is why God does not expect His children to conform to a law. He doesn't want us concentrating on DOING, on our performance. He is much more interested in a RELATIONSHIP with us. He wants our obedience to flow from a heart of love for Him, not to check off boxes on a checklist. When it sinks in that Christ was made sin for us (2 Cor. 5:21) so that we would be made the righteousness of God (Think of it!!) in Him--it makes us so grateful that we just WANT to do what pleases Him. Which is what you were expressing in your original comment, if I'm not mistaken. But as for the fact that believers in Christ are not subject to the Law, there are many verses which teach this. Romans 4:5 "But to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness." Romans 6:14 "For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace." Romans 5:10 "For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by [[Whose???]] his life." [Not by our own continued obedience] Philippians 3:9 "And be found in him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith:" One final verse: 1 John 2:1 "My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. But thanks be to God, that you who were once slaves of sin have become obedient from the heart to the standard of teaching to which you were committed,and,having been set free from sin, have become slaves to righteousness. @@MadebyKourmoulis I believe this here is the key: 2 Corinthians 10:5 "Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ;" If our thoughts and attitudes are pleasing to Christ, then our words and actions will be as well. Do you remember the book by Charles Sheldon, "In His Steps"? The main theme of the story was, "What would Jesus do?" I truly believe that is the "law" we are to follow, if you want to call it that. Paul said in Philippians 1, "For me to live is Christ." Jesus is our Savior. He is our Shepherd. He is our standard to follow. He is our Lover. He is our all in all!

yes he does, take him at his word. when you decide to dig through and find out what he really meant, we call that self deception. john says that if you know jesus youd stop sinning. but you want to believe that its not possible because what your looking for is an excuse to continue in sin because of the fleeting value you get from sin. if thats what youre looking for you will find it. and you will not be believing jesus, or following jesus at that point, because you are going after your father the devil and sinning. so congrats, but why wouldnt you just see that jesus said if you want eternal life youd keep the ten comandments. then start keeping those commandments. and when jon says if you say you know him and still sin then you a liar and the truth is not in you. then you can realize if you dont follow jesus, you dont know jesus. jesus said if you love him you will keep his commandments. do you keep his commandments? if no, you have failed to love god and jesus. as jesus said, because if you did, youd do what they commanded. meanwhile every christian out there, decides to dig into the text and make it say what they want it to say, when the letter of the word is clear from the start. you must keep the king and god and creators commands, there are 10 of them, its not hard. john even says its not hard... just do it, because the text does not allow for a wicked sinner to be justified without repentence. it is required of you to repent and keep the commands of god. full stop. if you dont, you dont get in to the kingdom.

Its talking about living in sin which is a lifestyle of sin. We have the Holy Spirit living within us which is the seed of God and if you are truly been born of God you cannot continue in habitual sin and if you are living in sin and you die in those sins you are lost. We have to power to repent of sin or else Jesus wouldn't command that of His disciples. We can give our addictions like to drugs and alcohol and pornography amd greed and lust but even after we repent of those compulsive behaviors we still are flawed and still make mistakes but we are not living a life defined by sinful living. I know this is the case from my own personal experience. God has given me the Grace to overcome every compulsive behavior and I had a few and it didn't happen over night but today I am free and yet I still make mistakes therfore our righteousness is as filthy rags before God and it has nothing to do with us because it is all God working within us. So then, my beloved, just as you have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your salvation with fear and trembling; for it is God who is at work in you, both to will and to work for His good pleasure. Philippians 2:12‭-‬13 NASB None of it is of ourselves.

To those who don’t abide in Christ; John 15:6 ESV says: “If anyone does not abide in me he is thrown away like a branch and withers; and the branches are gathered, thrown into the fire, and burned.” To those who don’t know Christ; Matthew 7:23 ESV says: “And then will I declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness.’” So if we continue on sinning, after having come to a knowledge of the truth, we will not be justified on judgement day, unless we confess our sins and stop sinning. 1 John 1:9 ESV says: “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”

In the new covenant, faith is described as a rest (Rom. 4:5, Heb. 4:3), while unbelief is described in terms of actions and verbs like practicing lawlessness. Unbelief is resisting the Holy Spirit and clinging to worthless idols (Acts 7:51, 14:15). Unbelief is rejecting Jesus (John 3:36) and denying the Lord (Jude 1:4). It’s thrusting away the word of God and judging yourself unworthy of life (Acts 13:46). It’s suppressing the truth (Rom. 1:18) and delighting in wickedness (2 Th. 2:12). It’s turning away (Heb. 12:25), going astray (2 Pet. 2:15), and trampling the Son of God underfoot (Heb. 10:29). "1 John 1:9 ESV says: “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” The first chapter of 1 John was not written to believers but to Gnostics who did not believe that Jesus came in the flesh, hence the uncharacteristic opening in the first epistle of John. There was no greeting to believers, unlike what we find in his second and third epistles. Instead, the apostle John opens up his first epistle with a direct address to the serious heresy of the Gnostics-“That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon, and our hands have handled” (1 John 1:1, emphasis mine). John was telling them that Jesus had indeed come in the flesh, as he and his fellow disciples had heard, seen, and touched Jesus. It is only in chapter 2 of John’s first epistle that you see the phrase “My little children” for the first time, intimating that from that chapter on, the apostle John was addressing believers. The Gnostics also believed that they had no sin. So the apostle John was telling them that if they would acknowledge and confess their sins, God would forgive them and cleanse them from all unrighteousness (see 1 John 1:8-9). The early Christians did not have the book of 1 John for some fifty years, so their getting “right with God” could not have been through the confession of sins. Apostle Paul, who wrote two-thirds of the epistles to the churches, never once taught on confession of sins. In fact, in his letter to the Corinthian Christians, many of whom were committing sins like visiting temple prostitutes, he didn’t tell them to go and confess their sins to get right with God. Rather he reminded them of who they were in Christ-“Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you?” (1 Cor. 3:16 KJV) Our being “right with God” is not based on the imperfect confession of sins by imperfect man, but on the riches of God’s grace and the perfect sacrifice of His Son. Those who believe that 1 John 1:9 is telling believers to confess their sin every time they sin need to realize that every sin needs to be recognized and confessed (otherwise, based on that verse, one is still unrighteous). You cannot pick and choose what to confess or confess only the sins you remember. And it is not humanly possible to confess every sin in thought, word, and deed. The word “confess” in 1 John 1:9 is the Greek homologeo, which means “to say the same thing as” or “to agree with.”2 To confess our sins, therefore, is to say the same things about our sins as God does: that it is sin, and that our sins have been forgiven and washed away by the blood of our Lord Jesus Christ (see Rev. 1:5). When you have sinned and realize you have sinned, true confession is agreeing with God’s Word and expressing your gratefulness to Him for the reality of the believer's forgiveness in Christ. In the two instances where we see the word “sins” in 1 John 1:9, it is the Greek noun hamartia that is used. "Hamartia" (“a missing of the mark”) indicates “a principle or source of action, or an inward element producing acts . . . a governing principle or power.” In other words, it refers to the sin principle, or our sinful state on account of Adam’s sin. By using the noun form of this word, John was clearly not referring to our committing of individual acts of sin, or he would have used the verb form, hamartano. John was speaking of the need to acknowledge and confess to God that we are sinners because of Adam’s sin, as well as to receive the total forgiveness for all our sins through Jesus’ finished work. How often do we need to do this? Only once. That’s why 1 John 1:9 is primarily a salvation verse, one that encourages the sinner to acknowledge and confess his sinful state or “sinnerhood,” get born again by faith in our Lord Jesus Christ, and have his sinful state through Adam replaced with a new righteous state through Christ. The heretical Gnostic doctrine did not subscribe to a belief in man’s sinful state. John was addressing this heresy directly in the first chapter of 1 John and encouraging the Gnostics to confess their sinful state and receive the Lord’s complete forgiveness and total cleansing from all their unrighteousness through His finished work at the cross. Now, what does the apostle John say then, about our committing of sins after we’ve become believers? Just two verses later in the second chapter of 1 John, John answers this question as he begins his address to believers: “My little children, these things I write to you, so that you may not sin. And if anyone sins, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous” (1 John 2:1). This time, the words “sin” and “sins” are the Greek verb "hamartano". John is now referring to believers’ committing of sins-their sinful thoughts and deeds. What does John say regarding this? He reminds us that when we fail as believers, we have an Advocate with the Father-Jesus Christ. Stop spreading heresies or there will be "hell to pay" (pun intended)

I wholeheartedly disagree. "If" does not mean "when". A preacher tried to sell me that mumbo jumbo once upon a time. In fact, these were his words, "It says 'if' but it means 'when'." You know immediately that you're dealing with at least a liar when they pull that one on you. 'If' does not mean 'when'.

Nowhere does it state "you will sin". IF in the worst case IF anyone would sin, is not same as "you will definitely naturally obviously sin like everyone does". Your desperate pharisic gymnastics have been refuted easily by common sense. He repeatedly writes that believers cannot sin, in the sense that he must never sin, not that it's metaphysically impossible for him, but it's spiritually impossible for him. If you usually and naturally and regularly sins as most Western Lutheran Christians do, then youre not a believer acc to John. Luke 17:1: “He said to the disciples, “It is impossible that no occasions of stumbling should come, but woe to him through whom they come.” Sin is not a process but an event. It is a one off act, not a punctiliar or repeated habit. For habit, there is a diff word "praxis" πραχις (practise). Study some accurate answers here and on the related Questions on this chapter. Needless to say again that if anyone by the worst case, fall into sin, then there is a chance of forgiveness, repent immediately. Dont hide your sins, he is willing to cleanse you from all unrighteousness. He wrote that you would not sin, never ever. The doctrine that a person remain perpetually sinful, because sin is not transgression of the law but a stain and substance in the soul, this will always lead to inextricable contradictions to the rest of the theological web. Jesus said to them, "If you were blind, you would have no sin; but since you say, 'We see,' your sin remains. John 9:41. As for 1 John 3:9, you have quoted the accurate translation, which shouldn't lead to any confusion, however some cannot understand the sense of "cannot sin" (ού δύναται not able to), if that is the case, then understand that it only implies that a child of God, would never sin. It doesn't say absolute inability to sin. John is not warning against making a habit and practice of sin, as though occasional sinning is acceptable. See Matthew 5:29-30. John also clarified that not all sins are equally dangerous; there is sin leading to death, and there is sin not leading to death (1 John 5:16-17).
