Teaser on what’s to come on our patreon page.
As we begin the process of stripping down and rebuilding our 'take out' Leyland L60 Two-Stroke vertically opposed multifuel Engine, to have an engine in reserve for our running Chieftain MBT, 02 EB 05.
We are currently fundraising to purchase and restore a Challenger 1 prototype, more can be seen and read here.

Excellent very informative. I am a Detroit diesel fan and find engineering from the past to be slightly better made than today's wafer thin computer designs !! They didn't quite get it right with the L60 but flipping heck it's a scary sounding beast at night on exercise you wouldn't want one to run over your foot !!!! Can Bovington help you out with the oily bits ? Your doing a fantastic job of keeping the history alive ! Good luck , there must be a fresh pack around wrapped up in grease waiting patiently somewhere !!!!!

2 strokes have to be a bit better designed with hardened metals.A polaris 850 Patroit turbo now more rugged that a kohler 4 stroke and much more power and torque than a kubota 1L 3 cyl.

I have a Hawker Siddeley / Lister St3 diesel generator which was built as gold standard in about 1980 . After that it was cost over performance !! My Lister , if serviced correctly can give a service life of ..... between 120 and 140 THOUSAND hours .. I think that's about 12 years without a break !!! I have a current model Lpw4 Lister , running a 28 Kva generator which , with proper servicing may hit 20 000 hours ... They sure don't make em like that anymore 😢😂😂😂

As with most things initially it was unreliable but it got sorted. So say the guys who ran them and looked after them. Apparently liner O rings where problem but got modified and sorted among other things.

They also suffered from lack of use, the chieftains at batus were said to be much more reliable as they were used much more often

Excellent video. Sound was a bit low. I've always wanted to know more about these engines & info on the internet is a bit sparse. Good luck with finding parts and completing the rebuild

Get a copy of the Haynes Chieftain Tank manual from the Tank Museum. Brilliant book with a full history of the design and development of the L60.

what was the main reason for failure on those L60 engines, they get a lot of criticism but if you think about it the designers were on the right track to come up with a 12 piston power pack a very small space compared to the continental v12 in an m60. Great sound though when running. The Cummins VT525 in our vehicles were ok depending on who rebuilt them.

I wonder why not trying to rebuild the liner - they could be made therefore you could repair, would be difficult I grant

I live in the U.S. , I see these tanks ( Chieftains ) for sale and would love to buy one and ship it back to the U.S. if I had the money. I would have to change out that L60 engine, I know how notorious it is of braking down and was the " Achilles Tendon " for that tank when it was in service in the U.K. and elsewhere. Would it be possible , hard or ease to swap that L60 with a American Detroit Diesel Inline 6 cylinder 71 series engine kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qK19mNigtMmrc40.html kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hLOCeatpvNfHgps.html ??? if you did some welding and get the mounts lined up, got the bell housing and flywheel coupled to the transmission input shaft, modify all the fuel lines , heat exchanger cooling lines to radiator etc. Could it be done in your opinion ??? Thanks Great video

Detroit 6-71 would be about 1/4 power output of the L60.
@jlo13800
@jlo13800 7 ай бұрын
You could but the detroit 2 strokes would not be as fast as the leyland l60 2 stroke. that would like swapping out an 850 rotax Etec with a hirth 440 from a 70's sled. it would go but not as fast or as much power.
@jlo13800

A 6-71 will not keep up with a leyland l-60 2 stroke and was not made for tanks. Its a good engine though.

@@jlo13800 OK. I have seen the opened engine bay with Layland L60 engine out of one of those tanks. It looks like I could fit a Detroit Diesel twin turbo V12 92 series in there instead of the inline 6 71. Would that help out my speed and power situation in one of those ??? Thanks for your reply.
