Co-founders & couple, Rosalie and Adam, firmly believe recycled materials should be as beautiful and desirable as anything new. Together they’ve been creating recycled and repurposed designs for more than a decade, founding Smile Plastics in 2015 to give architects & designers access to sustainable new materials. In their Welsh micro-factory they turn waste plastic into handcrafted panels that become anything from tables and stools, to kitchen benchtops and bathroom surfaces. The patented process is entirely circular, with all of their products 100% recycled and 100% recyclable, made using low temperatures & minimal energy. Their work has made its way around the world, inspiring a zero-waste future for construction & design.

What's the price ? I found an alternative product in France and the only price I found was around 130€/sqm for 8mm thick pannels, that's really expensive, on par with very large ceramic tiles (120x120 and above)

Every state here in the U.S. should have one of these mini-factories, each producing different products (to avoid too much duplication). This is one of the most innovative, imaginative, and intelligent ideas and videos I have ever seen!

Ridwell from Seattle is a plastic recycle company that added some zip codes in Minneapolis 2022. you pay for a biweekly pick up. all plastics they pick up are recycled. some areas have pick ups for a wider range of plastics depending upon what partners they can find in the area. Ridwell's website explains what companies & products are made. considering only 10% of the plastic in the US is recycled, Ridwell is the type of company that tries to bridge the gap between companies working on recycling, but need a steady source of plastic waste.

Materiality in any type of project always plays a fundamental role in its design, now it is boring to know that the same materials are almost always used for construction, I find it very interesting how they use plastic to create a totally new piece, without mention that this is an incredible help to the environment.

I think they said they started the business in 2014? I worked for an interiors company in Sydney in the early 2000s that was importing plastic panels like this. Smile Plastics rang a bell but I think they also got product from the USA. I always loved the product and quite innovate but surprised it’s taking so long to get attention it deserves. Great episode and love this channel.

To make upcycling premium - I think that embodies what we need to do to be able to reclaim all these plastic that has accumulated everywhere, including our waters. The volume of bottles for drinking water alone is mind-boggling. We also forget, as was raised in this episode, that plastic is from petroleum, and is therefore finite. Good job, Never Too Small for this episode and this series!

I love this idea, the products looked so nice and premium. I did wonder if the release of microplastics is a concern when using these panels in a kitchen or bathroom setting though. I’m wondering if a panel like this gets used often it would release microplastics over time. Especially in the kitchen where you would be handling food it would not be nice to have that happen. I don’t know much about microplastics besides the fact that we already are exposed to quite a lot of it regularly. So I would love for someone to clarify. If it safe in that regard I would love to use these materials in a home, they look amazing

@@FreerideTaurus It's important to ask these questions! In our process, we actually only heat the plastics enough to allow them to form a sheet, which is a far lower temperature than what is required for other methods, such as injection moulding. This, alongside the use of PET and HIPS plastics, greatly reduces the amount of offgassing during the manufacturing process. Any manufacturing process is going to have some byproducts, but ours stand up very well next to traditional methods. Plus, once the sheet is made, it is completely inert and does not offgas-unlike materials such as MDF, Ply and Chipwood. We're constantly working on transparency and reporting, to ensure that we are not only following best practice but making sure our customers are making informed choices, especially as we scale up. We recently attained an EPD which will be made public very soon and will detail our environmental impact-if you're unfamiliar with EPDs, you can read about it here and keep your eyes peeled for ours coming very soon! www.environdec.com/home

So true! …And sooo many other serious matters that are completely ignore by the push of “green-wash innovation” Please read before you get sucked in the “Green-wash” propaganda happening more and more these days. PLASTICS = PHTHALATES. Studies have begun to show deleterious endocrine and metabolic side effects associated with various subcategories of phthalates. Phthalates are in hundreds of products, such as vinyl flooring, lubricating oils, and personal-care products (soaps, shampoos, hair sprays). Some phthalates are in polyvinyl chloride plastics, which are used to make products such as plastic packaging, garden hoses, and medical tubing. THINK OF USING REUSABLE PLASTICS AS YOU WOULD USE REUSABLE NUCLEAR WASTE. IF YOU CARE ABOUT YOUR HEALTH AND THE HEALTH OF YOURS 👍🏼

As a product designers I always try to bring awareness to this issue which people are not even considering. People have the right to know and read before they get sucked in the “Green-wash” propaganda happening more and more these days. PLASTICS = PHTHALATES. Studies have begun to show deleterious endocrine and metabolic side effects associated with various subcategories of phthalates. In the past few years, researchers have linked phthalates to asthma, attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, breast cancer, obesity and type II diabetes, low IQ, neurodevelopmental issues, behavioral issues, autism spectrum disorders, altered reproductive development and male fertility issues. Phthalates are in hundreds of products, such as vinyl flooring, lubricating oils, and personal-care products (soaps, shampoos, hair sprays).
