There are no shocking revelations or statistics to corruption levels in the police service today. In many reports that have been released over the years, there is one common denominator. Many Kenyans still perceive the police as one of the most corrupt institutions in the country. The rot in the service gets even grim with images of police taking bribes on our roads becoming a common sight, almost acceptable.
The respect for the uniform and the crown as officers are dragged and bundled into waiting vehicles by investigators for bribe taking has reduced the traffic department to ridicule. Though the service has been undergoing numerous reforms with the establishment of the National police service commission, bribery is still rampant and almost getting out of control. Or has it?
The following report by NTVs Investigative Editor Dennis Okari may come as no surprise but explores the ingenious ways the traffic police go to get free money.

What baffles ?? Nothing. Kenya is Kenya and Kenyans are Kenyans. Kenya has been ranked 138 on the corruption index for years and we know apart from cosmetic changes, the bribe & impunity culture is very much with us,. So nothing baffles about this expose, because Kenyans are Kenyans and the culture is very much a way of life for Kenyans........

What the police spokesman forgets is that when you are asked to pay a bribe and you want to report it who do you go to the police so ofcourse you won't bother.

I lived in Kenya in the late 90s for about 2 years. The Kenyan citizens are some of the kindest people I’ve ever had the pleasure to know. As far as Police corruption is concerned, the Kenyan police is in a league of their own. They will stop you walking down the street in the middle of the day and ask you for your papers like it’s Nazi Germany. All because you look Somali. If profiling wasn’t bad enough, a Police officer who swore to protect and serve will tell you to give him as little as $5 and he will let you go. You give him the money and he says walk away. Shameful indeed.

At the end of every months when bills are due, you will see spike in police harassing Somalis in Eastleigh....especially following holidays when they get themselves in debt,.

the police bosses should travel outside kenya and police who are serious about their job and no bribes at all . if you try to bribe a police in uk that becomes another offense. drivers observe the rule of the law. May be the motorists should also be fined for bribing them.

Solution here is simple... remove the traffic department from the police and create a new one outside the force ran by well trained civilians similar to the NTSA. By doing so, we will solved two major problems; 1) We shall have more police doing primary police work i.e security 2) We shall create fresh jobs for young able Kenyans. This Cancer needs to be dealt with.

Police officers should declare the money they have before starting their shif.a second road block should in place with police cameras recording everything..vehicles operators should be also take note of police's badge I'd number. This should a disciplinary action, not a court drama..court relies on water tight evidence. And unless you prove beyond reasonable doubt..you have no case.
