As you can see from the comments, ren is actually extremely proud of his feminine qualities and his personality. Both Ren en Amber did not get forced into the pretty girl and tomboy role. Amber has always been a tomboy and she feels more comfortable the way she is. i think there was even a point where SM tried to get Amber more girly but Amber refused since she did not feel comfortable that way. Ren has always been that member that is insanely pretty and I think he knows and likes that. It shows in his Instagram as well. His movements as well have always been more feminine et cetera. lately he has been getting a bit more manly with his shorter hair et cetera but he isn't shy to resort back to his longer hair et cetera. Although he hasn't been asked those things directly, from statements etc this is what people thought. (also he used to call himself 'pretty girl' ^-^ ) There has been a lot of members that are either girly boys or boyish girls in kpop and while it of course is a selling point to include them into groups, I do believe that a big amount are actually that boyish girl or girly boy in the first place and the Korean industry is just very good with their marketing techniques (:

Lmao, I remember when the JAJ comments were "please watch Nu'est face!!!" a long time ago XD It has finally happened :P And as far as your comments, like others have said, the pink was about the whole anti-bullying movement at the time. It was the main colour hence it's presence in their MV. And I think in both Amber and Ren's cases, that's just naturally the way they are. Amber has always been more masculine and Ren has always seemed a little feminine (though both move on the spectrum really depending on who they're with). In their cases I don't think they are being forced to do anything.

I just want to clarify some things for you guys. Amber was a tomboy long before she joined SM. She always liked having short hair, wearing boyish clothes, etc. In fact, she was extremely worried that her style/personality would not be accepted when f(x) debuted, because so many other times in her life it wasn't. You should really react to her newest song, Borders. It will give you a lot of insight into how she felt. It's entirely in English, too. As for Ren, that's also just how he is. He likes having his hair that way, and that's how he acts naturally. He is feminine. Most of the guys who act feminine, like Key (SHINee) and Kevin (U-KISS) are naturally that way. And I'm pretty sure they're chosen because of how talented they are, not because they're feminine. There are cases where guys have have long hair for concepts (CNU of B1A4 and Changmin of TVXQ come to mind), but those guys are still very masculine. I know it's hard to differentiate between what the company tells them to do and how they actually are, which is why I recommend you guys start reacting to variety shows. That way you can see how members really are. =/

It's very ironic that you're talking about roles and fitting into a role because Face and their song after that Action was all about Nuest talking against social norms and boundaries, generally that "rebel, be yourself, don't be trampled" thing that somehow got lost over the years. I would've liked it if you talked about the MV more but it's okay, you guys do make valid points ^^ And lol Seventeen is from the same agency as Nuest, and I think Pledis, their agency, tries to appeal more to a Japanese audience and get into Japanese market so they usually go for the long haired male thing at least once in their boybands.

Lol, btw.. Ren is very very popular with fans. That you're spending time debating gender issues over Ren is exactly how he grabs attention for the group - by confounding everyone. In fact, even non-fans remember NU'EST by Ren so yup, he does add a hell of a lot of value. TBH I don't find him exactly girly offstage, though he is very high maintenance, dramatic and damn hilarious on the group's social media. Ren absolutely flaunts his beauty and is in love with his reflection in a very endearing way. Guess when you put a group together you have to consider the dynamics and if there's enough personalities mixed in so they don't come across as flat on variety shows and youtube etc. Ren IS a personality for sure, long hair and all.

The feminine looking member is Ren, and he's known for being prettier than most females :P I think the only Kpop groups I know that don't really have androgenous (is this the spelling?) members are Big Bang, BTS, Monsta X, Got7, 2PM and 2AM. Oh and Akbar was talking about the Snapchat stuff; you guys can download this app called "V" and you can follow and interact with your favourite groups. Also, BTS has a youtube channel where they post these random videos called Bangtan Bombs they just act like idiots and play around. For the male and female thing, I think it's easiest for people living in Asian countries to tell because we are so used to the beauty standards. If one is unkempt, sloppily/unfashionably dressed and "unpretty," it's difficult to even find employment (it's just how we're raised) and many say that it reflects a lot on your personality (how much effort you put into doing something, etc) so unlike in places like America, it's normal for males to take care of their fashion, facial care, weight and hair just as much as females do. Even so, I think we all agree than Jeonghan and Ren look EXTRA EXTRA feminine, due to the softness and gentleness of their facial features and their unusually long hair.

I think in most examples of androgynous idols (Ren, Amber, ect) they actually preferred that look in the first place and nothing was forced on them, and from there the company just went on to use that as their look. There are some ways that companies have tried to push that image even further (like wanting Amber to be the rapper even though she auditioned as a singer, or during debut era they cut out any time when she cried because it didn't fit their image of her) but for the most part, these idols are very comfortable with their image :3

Usually it's not the company that forces the artists to dress or act certain ways, I mean there are some occasions when that happens ( probably with Ren, in this group, since last year he was pretty masculine in their comeback and I suggest you watch that ! ) but for some people like Amber, it's their own choice ! For example Amber said that she can't see herself in any other way, she feels good being what she is now. I think for Jeonghan is the same thing, his "transformation" from the trainee days to now was very natural and he enjoys being treated like a princess by the other members, he likes being spoiled haha So i mean, there are some occasions when they are forced to act this way but many times it's just how they are !

I don't think it's a company mandate as much as it's a cultural thing. Maybe the guy just prefers to look pretty :) I've noticed that koreans and kpop fans don't really fuss over androgyny or metrosexuality. I've heard men in korea normally wear bb cream and go to dermatologists. It's also a norm for kpop boy groups to wear eye makeup, and I've seen Gdragon wear skirts/women clothes. He also literally sparkles in one of their recent videos lol. In Kpop there's no negative stereotype attached to pretty boys and effeminacy, so it's really not such a big deal to them.

One thing I'd like to point out here is that Ren is kinda the OG androgynous one. I mean there were a couple before him like SHINee's Taemin, and Suju's Heechul. But neither of them really kind of shook up the kpop world the way Ren did. People talked about him like crazy, and he was the main contributor to NU'EST's popularity at the time. FACE still has the highest amount of views of any kpop debut MV EVER. Pledis have tried to replicate it with Jeonghan in SVT (who I love and is my bias, don't get me wrong) but never quite as successfully. IMO Jeonghan still looks a lot more masculine and kind of like a prince, whereas Ren is just this... ethereal... otherworldly being? :') Sorry I could talk about this forever, I'm a HUGE Ren stan hahaha :D
