I invited a few graduates on to talk about their experience at Nucamp. At less than $2000, this coding bootcamp is probably the cheapest coding bootcamp that I've reviewed so far. The target audience definitely seems to be focused on working professionals that are looking for a low-cost entry into the software engineering industry. Towards the end, you'll also get to hear me go off on a rant and squash bad advice that came from a huge personality in the developer community. Don't ever be afraid to make a mistake as a developer. Really appreciate the reviews! I've decided to go with Nucamp, it definitely helps knowing some of the shortcomings ahead of time so I can prepare and know what to expect from the overall experience. I've done a little bit of learning on my own, but I really want something part time so I can keep my job. Given the price and schedule of the nucamp program, I don't mind supplementing things during and after the program on my own.

That's one of the main ways I'm able to vet people and reach out to them. @@DonTheDeveloper really? I just checked I think rithm school has an alumni page on linkin, I think there alumni list is quite small since they have no more than 16 people per cohort and I think there is only a new cohort every 8 weeks or so

I start NuCamp next month (June 20th, 2022), and thanks to this video and the experiences of these fine people, I decided to do a couple of udemy courses before I start bootcamp... I'm doing a base Javascript course and I will also be doing React and a couple of others before the next course starts (front end dev)... I think this is incredibly valuable and knowing what to expect ahead of time, especially knowing that this bootcamp isn't meant to be a fully immersive is golden. I will supplement on my own while going to bootcamp and take a couple of months after to build a solid portfolio and hopefully land a job next Spring... fingers crossed!

I've watched a few of these from this channel, and I always feel like the "Do you believe you are industry ready?" questions could be much better answered by a Q&A session, where the guests specific real-world software engineering questions like "What is SHA256? Why do we use, and especially over, say, MD5?", "Given this SQL schema, and these items you need, what query could you write to get them? Are there any indexing solutions you could add to speed up the query?", "Given this set of requirements, what system architecture do you believe would be best suited for this project?", "What is Agile development? How does a sprint work?", "What is a Hash-map? When should it be used instead of a list/array of tuples?", etc.

Yeah I agree with you. Testing their knowledge will be more fruitful in assessing their technical level. There are a couple of challenges to that, that prevent me from doing that. 1) Most of the questions you listed are backend focused. When we're assessing technical knowledge of graduates that graduate a "fullstack" program, the questions I should be asking could vary so widely depending on what types of developer positions they were aiming for. 2) It was very hard to find a volunteer that felt comfortable enough being tested in my mock interview video. Expecting people to be willing to be vulnerable like that knowing that their appearance (which would basically turn into an interview) would be available for the world to see, for the rest of their life, is a BIG ask. It would exclude so many potential guests, that it's not even close to being worth it. I could see the only people (mostly) willing to do that are going to be people with a lot of confidence, and that have probably have excelled in the program, which doesn't best represent what the average student will be capable of. The open ended question allows them to open up with a wider range of answers that ultimately also show how confident the program has helped them become. Imposter syndrome is often exposed with this question and that's a good thing. It shows other aspiring developers that they aren't the only ones feeling not so confident with the job search. They're not alone. If you have any suggestions that help alleviate those concerns and that also will attract the less prepared students that graduate, feel free to let me know what you come up with.

(4) As soon as version control starts to make sense, start using it. Just use the tools 1 by 1 as they become useful and they'll have a special meaning. Try git Tower or another visual app to make it more fun. and learn about basic typography and color... instead of just "being a dev" and leaving that to the "visual designers." You are a designer too.

(5) How to get a job: This whole process up above - is the path to getting your job. Think about what industries you want to work in. Think about what you like. Is it fishing? Painting? Traveling? Video games? Start getting an idea of what role you like (front-end/ animations /devOps / building apis... whatever). Make each of your little projects about that passion. They really are hiring YOU - the person. Typing the code is great, but you are the person they will be working with.

(6) Choose your job: Find something you're passionate about. Choose the job you want. Make the projects that will prove your skill and enthusiasm for that job. Then - go meet some of the employees and ask them what they are looking for. Get organized and then go tell them you are ready to start. Make it fun.

(8) Be social: Pair program a lot. Talk about your work. Share ideas and struggles. Get a group of coding buddies. Get a Slack or Discord group. Be open and honest about learning - because it's not going to stop. It's a lifestyle.

All bootcamps are like this, my husband did a Bootcamp with the UNF and FullStack and they where so fast into things that he doesn't know clearly React and they didn't study react like really deep. They didn't study react native. And he paid like $15.000 USD So, after my husband's experience I started learning the fundamentals of JS by myself and then I decided to join NuCamp and I'm very conscious that I should complement my learning from the bootcamp because I already have a bachelor's degree that I got throught studying online. So I'm very use to this learning style but I know it's not for everyone.

@@gsabella4 It was great. I was always supported by the instructors and Nucamp community in Slack and during the workshops. The instructors are people with tons of experience programming and working in the tech industry. However, there are things that you should do by yourself because some topics are so broad that you just learn part of it. So, you should dedicate time to go over things in deep like in other bootcamps. This year Nucamp also upgraded its React and React Native courses from the front-end and full-stack bootcamps. Which was a major update to this courses since 2018 I think. So, it was for me a good experience.

I just started the nucamp full stack course this week, but this review has made me realize that it isn't that good of a program. The people you interviewed did not seem like they were job ready, not to disparage them but its more like an intro course rather than comprehensive course.

I don't think any of them would take it personally. That's the interesting part of bringing several graduates together where they can speak freely. I think they helped each other realize that supplementation of education is necessary for this particular coding bootcamp. I'm glad to hear that you found some insight from this video. If you're looking for a coding bootcamp that'll get you job ready and competitive in the entry level market, I would expect to pay $10,000 to $20,000. Good luck in choosing another coding bootcamp if that's what you decide to do. Hopefully the other reviews on this channel will help you choose one.

I am starting the web dev fundamentals course next week (4week course) and then was planning on doing full stack. I felt the same way as far as the graduates not feeling job ready. Makes me feel like I should stick to Udemy, but I am still going to give Nucamp a shot and hopefully get something out of it

@@jenndelgado85 The fundamentals course should also help give you more perspective into what your strategy should be, going into the coding bootcamp. If I were going through Nucamp, I personally would take advantage of the fact that it's part-time, and supplement my learning from other sources to make it a full-time venture for me. If you have other responsibilities that prevent you from investing more time into your learning, it might be more realistic to spend 3 months at Nucamp, let them teach you how to learn how to code, and use the following 3 months to reinforce what you learned and continue getting more comfortable with the technologies. This isn't a slight against Nucamp. To be honest, even at coding bootcamps that I'd consider to be top tier, I wouldn't trust them to get anyone all the way to job ready with a part time program only lasting 3 months. If you're going to go through with it, take advantage of the low price and just make sure you supplement your knowledge and invest extra time into building out personal projects.

@@DonTheDeveloper agreed! No offense at all about not being job ready right after grad. That was my experience which may not be representative of most. It led me to think though. This Nucamp review is unique in that none of interviewees had jobs (yet), which may not reflect a representative experience for other Nucamp grads. What are your thoughts are doing another Nucamp review with people who have actually obtained developer jobs? I think that would provide a more balanced perspective/ would be helpful for those considering the program to have a well-rounded perspective.

@@krystaladeoye2911 I understand your concern, but I have to be careful about specifically selecting certain individuals and filtering out others. On average, I think a random sample statistically provides a much more accurate representation of coding bootcamps vs my own biased picks, which is exactly what they would be if I did this. Balancing based on job placement, and forcing a perceived healthy balance won't actually make it more representative of the majority. One thing that I can tell you is that out of the people I did screen and even reach out to, your experiences weren't as unique as you may think they are. I've interviewed and mentored over 1000 coding bootcamp graduates, and what was mentioned was pretty typical of coding bootcamps similar to Nucamp. Even if this review might be representative, sometimes it can still be hard to look back on an interview and wonder if you were too critical of it and I can empathize with that. If I'm wrong about your mindset, you can ignore this. If this hits home even a little bit, I have a couple of reassurances for you. 1) Almost every coding bootcamp has seen one of my reviews on them. I've had previous videos with much more critical views, and NO staff from any coding bootcamp has ever reached out to me in frustration. They have always thanked me for the deep dive and appreciated the feedback and constructive criticism this gave them. 2) The CEO of Nucamp reached out to me and really seemed to appreciate this video. It sounds like he really understood certain tradeoffs he had made with decisions about the bootcamp, and he appreciated the in-depth review of it. 3) Ultimately, this will bring Nucamp more signups. The difference is that if they saw this video, they now can have more realistic expectations of what they will get out of it. Dissatisfaction with coding bootcamps often is a result of mismanaged expectations. I think if someone takes this review seriously, and comes up with a plan to supplement their knowledge on top of this very affordable coding bootcamp, they are going to be very successful in finding their first developer position.

The guy complaining about Android Studio projects in one of his courses……..oof! Yeah it blows, especially on low-end machines. Terrible resource hog and glitchy as hell at certain points. I was so sure I was going to fell that Android Studio Dev course I took back in college. Miracles took place. 😂
