United States Air Force Training Film 5363, “Nuclear Effects During SAC Delivery Missions,” 1960, Secret
Document 1 of the National Security Archive Briefing Book 825
nsarchive.gwu....
The U.S. Air Force produced this film to help prepare SAC bomber crews to carry out nuclear strikes and to evade the dangerous effects of those detonations. After a detailed presentation of what SAC had learned about the problem of nuclear effects and how to safeguard the bomber crews from them, the film includes a dramatization of what crew members could experience during a nuclear strike mission that looks like a scene from Stanley Kubrick’s famous film, Dr. Strangelove.

I was thinking the same thing, I've seen a lot of these clips in Trinity and Beyond: The Atomic Bomb Movie. I guess this is the full release to the public instead of just small snippets here and there. The B-57 footage was interesting, I hadn't seen that before. I haven't watched it all yet, I'm sure there is more that is new.

These movies were a form of saber-rattling during the Cold War. The US Govt. would produce these movies of atomic testing, stamp them Classified, and then "accidentally" leave them laying around outside of a classified storage area to be stolen by Russian agents. It was a way of showing the Russians, "This is what weapons we've got, don't f**k with us." And yes, the movies would be careful to show only documents that didn't actually have anything classified.

I was curious as to how many nukes the B-52 can carry. The B-52 can carry some 45 Mark 83-class bombs (27 internal, 9 on each HSAB pylon). The B61 nuclear gravity bomb is a bit smaller in all dimensions, and uses the same mounting lugs, so physically, there would be no problem for the B-52 to carry 45 of those. One plane could destroy many of the major cites in Europe.
@seismicrock6849
@seismicrock6849 Жыл бұрын
The B-61 didn't get DoD authorization until 1963 and hit full production in 1968. The B-52 was designed to carry multi-megaton bombs such as the Mk-17 @15 megatons yield, the Mk-41/B-41 @ ~25 megatons, and the Mk-53/B-53 @ ~9 megatons. These bombs are huge and the BUFF could accommodate two of the B-41s. The B-61 was considered a weapon for the F-105, FB-111, F-104, F4, etc.
@ericb592
@ericb592 Жыл бұрын
B-52's could also carry 2 "clips" of 4 Mk28's for a total of 8, and two Hound Dogs on the wing pylons. It was those very Mk28's that were thrown from the Buff that had a midair over Palomares Spain...A typical load would be 4 Mk28's and 6 SRAMS for Air Defense suppression (radars, SAM sites, etc) on a rotary launcher, or 2 B41's or B53's and 6 SRAMS..Pre SRAM it would be 4 each of 41's or 53's and two Hound Dogs for Air Defense suppression

The video has been desensitized, not declassified. At 3:19 you can see the right tail wing move with a rupture of vibration with the video. This was added effect for the movie. The entire video is a propaganda video from the day. NOTHING IS DECLASSIFIED. It's just a 1956 video that was released back in 1959 to anyone that wanted to view it. Like they would say back then, don't be a sap! They played this video in colleges in the 1960s for physics science classes if the professors requested it. Period. If you think is something new, then you are new to American history vids and docs that have been around since the 1950s. We watched this in school in the 1960s as requested science material for high school. This is old footage that kids today just found.

A lot of these movies were classified--only as long as it took Russian agents to steal it when it was "accidentally" left laying around. It was a form of saber-rattling, kind of a "this is what we've got and we're ready to fry you" message. There's nothing actually classified, the closest thing was a piece of paper with red circles cut out of it, a classified document that was redacted to be unclassified.

The key flaw in this training film is that the Minuteman missiles will have done their destruction long before any aircraft arrive to add more nukes to the burning landscape. Bouncing the rubble. Any Soviet fighters that survive the missile attack will be on any incoming bombers like white on rice. You can head back to the base after the mission, but the base will likely not be there. Just look for any intact airstrip when your fuel runs low and hope the locals won't lynch you for destroying the world.
