Cesium 137 was the isotope behind the incident that happened in Brazil. There was an old x-ray machine left behind in an abandoned medical facility. Two men broke in to find scrap metal to sell and decide to take the machine. They opened and found the cesium powder. Everybody got curious about it because it glows blue in the dark. A child played with it rubbing all over her body. Four people died and 249 got contaminated.
@markjacobson4248
@markjacobson4248 8 ай бұрын
Yeah, that's probably the type of Cesium being thought of here. Some form of cesium salt, likely cesium chloride. Metallic cesium isn't actually nearly as problematic, but it is an absurdly reactive material that will react with just about anything in an extremely exothermic way. It's so reactive and exothermic that air exposure will typically cause it to auto-ignite as it reacts with water and oxygen in the air.

it also does a lot of good in medicine and time counting. A lot of things are both useful and dangerous. And much less danegrous if handled carefully. I mean Nilered throws around acids and other chamicals he uses, that would be very dangerous in the wrong hands.

This person started out with a channel called NileGreen making just these parody NileRed videos, but after a few videos, NileRed got in contact with him to talk about it. Not in a bad way. He enjoyed the videos, but there definitely was a chance of confusion, especially with the use of the voice trained ai. From what NileRed said on a podcast, MrGreen is actually also a chemist, both from Australia iirc, and he got in contact with him over someone just happening to know them both.

I believe the bigger issue with metallic cesium was that it is highly reactive in oxygen and water. It's an alkali metal, like potassium and sodium, but far more reactive.

Yeah. He's probably thinking of Cesium in the form of some Cesium salts, which are used as radiation emitters.

Someone (Cody, I think?) did a video where he went through the whole alkaline metal series reactions with water, from lithium through cesium. (I think he couldn't get any francium, but it's actually less reactive than cesium anyway.)
@ranid0072
@ranid0072 8 ай бұрын
As crazy russian, i can approve. Cesium WAY more reactive than potassium. And its very expensive too... 50g = 900€
@markjacobson4248
@markjacobson4248 8 ай бұрын
@@tildessmoo it depends what you mean by "reactive". In the chemistry sense, the reactivity increases every row down, so francium absolutely is more reactive than cesium. The activation energy of the reaction with water decreases, which results in faster and more violent reactions. On the other hand, if you look at the actual energy release per mole of the material, there isn't a strong pattern. From potassium to cesium there is a consistent increase each row down, but Lithium actually releases more energy than cesium, and we don't really know for Francium because so little ever exists at a time. Combined with the mass of one mole of each metal increasing dramatically each row down, and far greater proportionately than the energy production does, the energy release per unit mass of each metal decreases as you go to more reactive alkali metals. In other words, one kilogram of sodium is far nastier in terms of explosive potential than one kilogram of cesium, just because the energy density per unit mass is much higher, more than making up for the lower reactivity and slower reaction.
@tildessmoo
@tildessmoo 8 ай бұрын
@@markjacobson4248 I was referring to the fact that it's less electropositive then cesium, but it was pure speculation that that would make it less reactive with water. But, as you say, it's not really relevant since there's not enough francium to waste any throwing it in water to see what really happens.
@tildessmoo

The video he "got the idea to make a nuke" from is a real one, and he even actually said it looked like a mini nuke in that video. It's called "this chemical really doesn't want to exist." And the one where his dad walks in is from when he made bromine in his parents' garage. You might want to watch that one, because it's probably one of the least safe videos he ever made (bromine is pretty dangerous), and he talks a lot about the safety precautions you should take and how he managed it in such an uncontrolled setting. Also, since I'm already recommending videos, I don't know if nanoparticles or superconductors are used much in nuclear engineering, but if they are, you might want to watch Nile Red's videos on making ferrofluid and a high-temperature (as in, liquid nitrogen is cold enough) superconductor.

I always thought that only U236 was depleted Uranium as it is neither fissile nor fertile. U238 is still a perfectly good fuel for breeder reactors so it is not really completely depleted. Although now that I think about it, there are not many breeder reactors around so there wouldn't have been much depleted uranium to go around if that was the case.
@TrimeshSZ
@TrimeshSZ 8 ай бұрын
Natural uranium is about 99.3% U238 and 0.7% U235. In theory, "depleted uranium" is anything that has a less than natural U235 abundance, but in practice it's typically about 0.3% U235. U236 is present in natural uranium, but at a very low level - it's mostly an issue in uranium recovered from used fuel because its a neutron absorber and hence reduces overall reactivity with the consequence that fuel rods produced from recovered uranium require a higher degree of enrichment than ones produced from fresh uranium for the same level of performance. Another consideration is that fuel rods made from reprocessed uranium have significant levels of U232, which has a gamma emitter in it's decay chain, so they are significantly more radioactive (about 3x) than ones made from fresh uranium and require special handling.

By playing i mean having at in my hand, letting it role around, looking at it from different angels and lighting. After that I heavily lick my fingers, can that be a huge issue? Would it be an issue if i play with it and afterwards I role a ciggi and smoke it, would there be enough particles for me to intake for that to be an issue? I just wonder how big the dosis of radioactive material has to be for concerns. My guess would be that it is pretty low.

Fun fact with the proper tax stamps a US citizen can own a nuclear bomb however they are not allowed to detonate it. Literally no weapon is outlawed in the US if you have the proper amount of money and paperwork plus storage, but the storage part no one really cares about unless it is like "Oh no i misplaced my nuclear bomb" ......yeah not only would you be banned for life from owning any NFA item that point onward you would probably be in prison for life if you misplace something like that But yeah any explosive falls under a NFA item including Nuclear bombs meaning you need the proper paperwork, also depending on where you live there are state and or city laws that might prohibit it, just like owning fully automatic guns is outright banned in some cities despite the state and federal government allowing it given the proper paperwork. It's also funny that full auto guns are more restricted and deemed more dangerous despite semi auto actually being more deadly as you are not wasting your ammo with semi automatic guns and you have more control over the gun, and by semi auto i mean it fires as fast as you can pull the trigger which is honestly just about every non single shot non revolver these days and also non pump action guns. Yes i just made a parallel between nuclear stuff and machineguns as the public fears them both unjustly when we have even more dangerous stuff floating around the US, granted nuclear bombs may be a bit of a stretch to have but that aside nuclear in general is unjustly feared just like machineguns

curiously enough, mrgreen is actually a very well trained physicist, engineer and chemist. So it isnt quite that surprising he has that attention to detail considering his expertise in these fields

I would like to ask you a question and I am really asking. at 10:25 a Trinity and beyond atomic central. I have one question. During this "so called blast" as you watch the blast I want to ask a simple question about this clip and yes you can find more videos of this event. So I have to ask you. 1. Why don't we see the typical radiation distortion in the film that we see in the tests. 2. I then have to ask and this one will get you to start thinking. The buildings are moving and effected by the blast right? We can see this right? So why isn't the camera effected. I rest my case.

I had to search for a long time but I found a video that claimed it was showing what the computer was displaying during Chernobyl accident. The video is called the last signal of the Chernobyl reactor. I was wondering if you could do a reaction and give us your insight as a engineer.
