Altengrad is a time-progression Cities: Skylines series where I build a Central European city, located until 1989 in the Eastern Bloc, taking inspiration from Germany, Poland, Czechia, Slovakia and Hungary. The series starts around the year 1920 and slowly advances forward in time, which means the city will naturally evolve all the way to modern times. The city is not a recreation of any one real-life city or country, but it takes inspiration from them.
PC specs are in the channel's About page. No, the game doesn't run like this in real time. Cinematics are recorded slow and made faster in editing.

Man, Altengrad might be one of the best series on youtube. Not like, gaming youtube, youtube in general. Each episode is a proper documentary, with sources and everything. I genuinely think it deserves like, ten times the viewcount at least.

If someone is ever in Austria, about an 1 hour trip from Vienna you have the Zwentendorf Nuclear power plant which has NEVER been used for commercial power generation and is now a tourist attraction/training facility. I recommend a visit, for those who get the chance (they are usually fully booked, but are nice enough when you write them an email). It was an amazing look into the world of nuclear power generation. Thing is, those cooling towers are *not* always necessary, it depends on the available cooling options. Truly magnificent

the river valley at the borders of the map seem ideal for vineyards. really reminds me of the main and Rhine river valleys. would love to see some vineyards there :)

If you feel like the plant is missing something: most electrical switchyards have gravel surfaces, I forget the exact reasons but I think it was to reduce the chances of somebody conducting electricity through themselves via wet grass? Related: switchyards have a grid of earthing wires laid under them typically so you may as well place the gravel when you're burying the earthing. This might help you make the area look more varied in terms of ground texture

Akruas, could you do a winter episode? The city would look very nice covered in snow. It could kind of be a Christmas episode but also (although I'm late for it) in 1978/79 there was an extremely cold winter, in Poland it's called "zima stulecia" (the winter of the century). If you do that, thanks in advance.

Repeating what another comment said maybe just placing gravel under the wiring might help with the surface emptiness. Other than that it just seems like the real life examples only look busier because they are more compact so there is less space between the buildings.

Hellooo, im watching the series from the beginning (currently at 75ep), but im still missing one important thing and that is metropolitan development. Smaller villages nearby which are going to be urbanised with growth of the city, e.g. Brno, Prague,... Im a big fan, just wanted to share my idea, btw you are really awesome, hopefully many more videos in this series to come :)

great video as always I was really excited for it, looks very cool, but honestly this whole area looks a bit empty, probably because the site is so huge Such a big project maybe deserves another episode to add detail definitely needs more greenery, maybe a sprinkler pool (even though it wouldn't make sense) a backup gas/diesel generator building, maybe an unfinished construction site for a more modern VVER-1000 and some more amenities for workers and expand emergency services on site

Amazing episode as usual! love the series, small insignificant note (can't help it). The cooling towers you got from 'Doel' Belgium, the 'oe' in 'Doel' is pronounced like the double O in 'Cool'. Anyways, loved the episode, can't wait for the next episode :))

Its embarrassing that we as Poles hold no nuclear reactors to this day because of our traditionalist population whos still stuck in the past because of 1 (one) single disaster that was completely preventable if built elsewhere. Its just depressing how we rely on coal rather than nuclear all because some religious farmers who still think the earth is 4000 years old, voted for one of the worst governments since PRL era. *edit, that and well yeah, coal lobbying. I simply remembered the multitude of protests that happened over ideas of building nuclear plants.

06:23 Except for Sweden of course, who built its own nuclear plants (BWR). The first research reactor started up in 1954, and the first commercial reactor starting operation in 1972. But then of course, Sweden might not count as it had an active nuclear weapons program during that era.

I'm curious how you will take Altengrad into the 90s. The former Eastern Bloc had disparate paths of economic policy post-collapse of socialism. Take, for example, the neo-liberal shock therapy in Russia caused depression whereas the baltic states had quite a prosperous development. I have no doubt you have this in mind in any event. Love your series!

Well Russia is in no way Central European, and this series focuses on Central European cities of the Eastern bloc (i.e. the Warsaw Pact countries excluding the Soviet Union). Altengrad is most inspired by Czech and East German cities (especially Prague and Dresden). And in terms of the liberalization and privatization both Czechia and East Germany were incredibly similar, even down to the incompetence of institutional authorities making sure that the terms of their privatization loans were being kept as well as the "wild" periods of economic lawlessness before stabilizing in the late 90s.

This ponds do not cooling the reactors. They are there for cooling of auxiliary systems.

19:00 Díky za použítí mé fotky, měl jsem z návštěvy radost, měli tam i prstenec z nedokončeného VVER-1000. Jsem také rád, že jsi použil cswiki pro informace o jaderkách, většina je moje práce, tak mě těší, že to mělo správný užitek. Vidím, že se o to zajímáš, já taky, rád poskytnu nějaké zajímavé informace o VVER, zapomenutých plánovaných projektech o kterých téměř nikdo neví a nebo jaderkách obecně do dalšího videa. Poslal jsem žádost na Discord, tak kdybys třeba měl zájem se na něco zeptat, jsem tu a rád poradím. Super video, máš nového odběratele, zasloužíš si ho. EDIT: Rostov měl mít původně všechny 4 (později 6) bloků bez věží, ale po roce 1998, když se rozhodli nedokončenou elektrárnu dokončit, projekt změnili, aby v důsledku tepla neumíral vodní život. To samé Kalinin, který má navíc v bloku č. 4 nádobu ze Škodovky.

The (former) powerplant of Rheinsberg is just half an hour away from my place of life. The Rheinsberg reactor, especially what happened after Germanys independence is quite interesting. I also heard that there are or had been guided tours around. I really enjoyed that Video, with once again great historical background. Have happy holidays and a happy new year 🤘🏻

There is a German documentary from '91 about the power plant in Bulgaria from 1991 (Link at the end). The images are horrific. Bulgaria was always a pretty poor country. The other socialists countries wasn’t ever that faulty. Some reactors were shut down after 2000. But the plant is nowadays still in operation, got several modernizations and upgrades… If I remind myself good, the main issue of Bulgaria was the lack of spare parts, financial investments and mainly the plan to realize the project as soon as possible to show the strength of the country with missing good construction workers - many important things where unfinished or made bad, like in the Sovjet Union. @@dragonlukasmapping805 Most likely in the 90's; The whole thing about Chernobyl wasn't really made publicly available outside of Ukraine until 1991 when the USSR collapsed. (The discussion itself also fueling the global movement against nuclear power to this day.)

Sadly highway construction in the 80's, especially through cities, is pretty much one of the most iconic parts about the decade. (Despite it being very.....debatable, to say the least.)
