The bomb had the same yield as the one that detonated over Hiroshima. The mortality rate at 1750 meters was about 20-30%, so it's actually not that unthinkable that you would survive at that distance. Fatality rate at approximately 1000 meters was about 70-80%, and at 350 meters approach 99%.
@GM53946
@GM53946 5 ай бұрын
@@xxfalconarasxx5659Presumably those that survived were behind walls and other barriers. You see here how the thermal radiation first ignites the paint, then the shock waves comes. If you are behind a concrete barriers you might survive the former, and then the shock wave may or may not kill you, depending on how strong the structures around you are. But out in the open you will get burned to crisp.

Explanation of what happened: Milliseconds after the explosion, a heat wave hits the vehicle burning the paint (anything combustible hit by this immediately catches fire) then a shockwave of highly compressed air hits the vehicle faster than the speed of sound. Lastly, as a mushroom cloud rises from the point of explosion, it sucks air inwards and towards the mushroom cloud.

The paint evaporated because it’s a thin layer. Nuclear bombs are unimaginably bright, but not for that long. During the flash, a layer is vaporised off of anything in line of sight, but the flash is over quickly enough that things far enough away will only lose a thin layer. Of course anything flammable will be ignited instantly. Objects close enough to the bomb can be vaporised entirely.

@@Catholichnikov what uneducated peasants call "heat" is just energy transferred from one body to another. In case of a nuke this energy is released, amongst other things, as electromagnetic radiation. Electromagnetic radiation on a frequency visible to human eye is called "light". In case anyone's wondering how far from the explosion these targets were, you can measure the time between the flash and the shockwave to get a rough estimate. The shockwave travels about about 1km in 3 seconds or 1 mile in 5 seconds, so e.g. the tent was about 2km away, since the gap was 6 seconds. This assumes the footage is in real time, of course.
@atomcentral
@atomcentral 5 жыл бұрын
the footage ran at 64 frames per second about 2.7 times faster than standard 24 frames per second. Since I can cheat and know the actual information, the distance to ground zero was 2938 ft.

@jmckendry84
@jmckendry84 4 жыл бұрын
@@alyg3044 yeah, the intense flash of light that burns arrives virtually instantly (it travels at the speed of light, unsurprisingly!), but the shockwave is much slower. If the shockwave moves at the speed of sound, that means it takes roughly 3 seconds to travel 1km, and from that you can roughly work out the distance between the objects and explosion.

Well the camera is between the car and the bomb as it has to get the "burning" side, which means it has to be at least on the same side of the bomb to get the picture. What they probably do is have a earth work embankment covering the back and sides of the camera to deflect most of the blast and heat. You can see the blast wave on the ground at around 300 degree angle (on the first car) from the camera which suggests that it is not a long range shot as the circle of the blast would probably obscure the picture before it hits the car.
