Taking a break from Classic Rock is often just a walk in the park... THE SONG - "Numb" is a band composition by American rock band Linkin Park. It appears as track #13 on their second studio album 'Meteora'. Recording for the album took place from Apr to Dec 2002 initially at rhythm guitarist, vocalist, keyboardist Mike Shinoda's home studio and then at NRG Recording Studios in North Hollywood. The album was released on March 25, 2003. "Numb" was released, as the album's third single, on Sept 8, 2003. Linkin Park already had massive commercial success with their first album 'Hybrid Theory' from Oct 2000 and the interim remix album 'Reanimation' from July 2002 so expectations were high for 'Meteora'. The album sold more than 800,000 copies in its first week of release. It reached the #1 spot on the Billboard 200 chart on Apr 12, 2003. "Numb" became one of the band's most recognizable and acclaimed songs. It's chart history is complicated because it appeared on a number of Billboard's charts. "Numb" peaked at #11 on Mar 6, 2004 on the Hot 100 but it also reached #1 on the Alternative Songs chart on Nov 22, 2003 and the Active Rock chart on Dec 13, 2003. The song is variously described as alternative rock and nu-metal. It's about kids who are fed up with the high expectations of their parents who have forgotten what it was like when they themselves were kids. According to SongFacts, Mike Shinoda told 'Soundweb' "I think it was a nice way to end the album because it kind of sums up the record. It's very recognizable as our sound. It sounds like a Linkin Park song but it does have some mood that 'Meteora' has if that makes any sense. Maybe I can say that better. When you hear it, you can easily recognize it as a Linkin Park song but it obviously belongs on 'Meteora'. It obviously belongs in this new group of songs just because of the way the tone of the song is and the lyrics are. It's kind of about those times when you've got no feeling left or you just don't care. It's almost like exhaustion or something which funny enough is how we felt after touring last year." Linkin Park has not escaped tragedy. Their main vocalist was Chester Bennington. Aside from LP, Bennington founded electronic rock band Dead by Sunrise in 2005. He also became the front man for Stone Temple Pilots for a couple of years. He was quoted as saying, "Stone Temple Pilots has this sexier, more classic rock feel to it. Linkin Park is a very modern, very tech-heavy type of band. I grew up listening to these guys. When this opportunity came up, it was just like a no-brainer." He also stated that singing lead vocals in Stone Temple Pilots was his lifelong dream. He left STP on friendly terms in 2015 to return to his commitments with LP. Chester Bennington committed suicide on July 20, 2017. Linkin Park has remained on hiatus ever since. THE DRUM COVER - "Numb" is another of those songs released during the "loudness wars" when heavy compression was used on CD releases in an attempt to make them sound "better" on radio. If Sina's cover sounds less compressed than you remember, it's because Mike used his skill and "magic" to breathe a bit of life back into the recording - making it a less numbing experience! :D

This, Faint and Breaking The Habit come to mind. IMO it would have been real difficult to replicate Chester Bennington's lead on this. I'm glad you shared with us. I suppose it can be found in the folder "Lost Hidden Gems" on your hard-drive! :) Time to replay it a few dozen times and let my neighbors here this cranked up to 11. As always this will be playing in my head now for the next few days!

Not many will notice or care about the slow zoom-out at 2:22 and -in at 2:43, but it adds a nice touch to this video. The viewer sees the concentrated movement in the hands, so when the camera sort of pulls out or in from that 'focal point', it not only looks good but also adds a bit of dramatic feel to the shot. On the zoom-in, her dad had it in his mind he was going to start and stop it on the last hi-hat strike. I think it's cool.
