Күн бұрын

This is the first installment in a new series I am going to start producing called "Bowhunting Whitetails w/ Bill Winke". Most episodes will focus on hunting strategy and deer behavior, but in this episode I am going to introduce the farm I recently bought and explain why I am focusing on habitat work and not trying to increase deer numbers on the new property.

Also I just wanna add how nice it is to see someone on a platform of land use where it’s a passion, love, and genuine excitement for creation. So many here in western IL are buying ground and turning it for pure profit. To be doing what you do because you love the land and what God created for us is refreshing to see. I cannot put into words what our farm means to us.

Check into EQIP program for removal and prevention of invasives including warm season grasses reintroduction. Same with local/state forestry service on timber stand improvements. Both have cost reimbursement and tax reduction incentives. Also Pheasants/Quail Forever have warm season mixes. I think there is another program for creating 'pollinator patches'.
@bill-winke
@bill-winke 2 жыл бұрын
Wyatt, Thanks. Yes the forester has been there to the farm and is going to draw up a plan for EQUIP cost share. Our focus at first will be reforestation of some of the lower sloping pasture ground using direct nut seeding (acorns) and we are going to start TSI work. I also had the private lands biologist from Iowa and the US Fish & Wildlife stop by. They were especially interested in what they call "Goat Prairie" which is just prairie habitat on steep slopes. I have one spot that is perfect for that. Everyone seems busy and I have not gotten any plans back, but hopefully I can get this started this fall.

Hi Bill. My name is Paul and I was wondering when are you going to write your next book on hunting ridges. I bought, read and applied the information from your book on hunting creeks and ditches and harvested a very nice 11 point buck. I've watched and followed you for years and will continue to. I've gotten older now and hunt more from ground blinds with a crossbow then from tree stands using my compound bow. Looking forward to leaning more and harvesting bigger bucks with your information. Congrats on your new farm.
@bill-winke
@bill-winke Жыл бұрын
Thanks Paul and congrats on a great buck. I am glad I could help! I never wrote a follow up to that book. Petersen 's Bowhunting published that book and then went out of the book business a year later (I hope it wasn't because my book did poorly). Anyway, I did buy 1,000 of their leftover books so if anyone wants a copy of "Creeks and Ditches" they can send $20 to: Bill Winke, 2585 Quincy RD, NE Solon, IA 52333 and I will get one out. I am not going to write another book, I don't think. They just don't sell like they did before the internet. I may produce an ebook or similar, but the best place to find my written content in the meantime is on my website billwinke.com. I will try to keep that updated with new stuff.

Plant acorns? But you have loads of timber already. I say allow the pastures to help you maximze the benefits of timber funnels. Keep it diverse with lots of surface area of edge.
@bill-winke
@bill-winke 2 жыл бұрын
When you plant acorns you automatically get lots of edge and diversity because not all the seeds germinate and grow so you get big gaps and a very natural looking area long-term. If I let it go, I will just get cedars because that is what is already starting to grow in those areas. I need to help nature along in this case.
@richienell
@richienell 2 жыл бұрын
@@bill-winke Perhaps natural cedar regeneration would be good for creating understory thickness for bedding areas between the overstory canopy timber. And then maybe mow strips within it to encourge early succession vegetation.

Bill, It’s hard to explain how much motivation your body of work has given me in the last 5 years. I’ve loved whitetail hunting since I was 15, I’m 24 now and the obsession has not eased. I love hunting in general. I’ve always wanted to own a big farm that I can restore native habitat manage native wildlife. I started a business and have grown as aggressively as I’ve known how for 3 years and we’ve doubled every year. I intend to continue that. “Always dream big” sounded cliche and annoying until I started taking ownership of my life and going after what I wanted. I’m hoping to buy my family farm, it’s 320 acres of river bottom and rolling land in northern indiana, it’s been in my family since 1850. Seeing you manifest the lifestyle I want gives me encouragement to keep going and belief that it’s possible. I’d love to meet you some day, you impact people in ways that I’m sure would surprise you.

to say I'm confused is an understatement. I thought you basically created and ran midwest whitetail and now it seems your not involved at all lol. something happened on the back burner I guess. either way what's important is your back and I'm excited I've always loved following your videos. the mww daily was just not the same without you. can't wait to come along on your new adventures winke. best of luck this season. I really like how you hinted at public land. would be cool to see how you would approach a public land hunt. I know the hunting public basically came out of mww so it would be neat to see if you have a similar approach or a differnt take. either way I'm already hooked on this series

Brenton, I sold Midwest Whitetail in a round about way to the guys that are running it now (Jared, Mike and a couple of investors). I got burned out creating media all the time and then having to run that business, which never seems to sleep. Everyone should appreciate what those guys at Midwest Whitetail are going through every week to bring that stuff to you. Tons of work behind the scenes. I will hunt public some, but I don't think my approach will be anything revolutionary - just try to find spots that aren't being hunted much by others and see what shows up. I just enjoy hunting new areas and seeing new stuff, so that would be the motivation for hunting those areas - find some cool places to sit! Thanks for the support. Have a great day!

@@bill-winke that's awesome Bill yea it definately seems like a grind. and honestly I think you deserve the break from all that and a chance to get to hunt at your own pace you have worked your butt off to build that company. it is nice to just go out and enjoy the hunt. I still love midwest whitetail but it was lacking to me at least just from your absence and that's no disrespect to the other guys they are great. you have such an awesome way of telling your story which is truly a gift. which is why i still think you'll bring more to the table than you think hunting public or anywhere new for that reason. I appreciate the response. I'm sure it was difficult moving on from that but I will say you look refreshed and excited for this be endeavor and I can't wait to see where it leads.

Love it. Watch a lot of bow hunters, but love watching you and learning the most, even when it’s not hunting season. Can’t wait!
