Nunchaku (Japanese: ヌンチャク Hepburn: nunchaku often "nunchucks" in English) is a traditional Okinawan weapon consisting of two sticks connected at one end with a short chain or rope. In modern times the nunchaku were popularized by Bruce Lee in his movies.

When I was about 11 my Uncle passed away and left a ton of insanely cool ninja weapons. I tried out the nunchaku and it didn’t go too well. Now I’m 14 and getting heavily involved in Martial Arts and have started training with them again. This video was extremely helpful and I appreciate the orderly nature of it. Thanks 🙏 Edit: I’m also going full Weeb with a pet tortoise and training in Jiu Jitsu. 😂🥋🥋🥋

"Weapons are the tools of violence; all decent men detest them. Weapons are the tools of fear; a decent person will avoid them except in the direst necessity and, if compelled, will use them only with the utmost restraint. Peace is his highest value. If the peace has been shattered, how can he be content?" ~LaoTzu (Lionel Giles transliteration) Nice video. Personally I have found that regular nunchaku practice is excellent for breathing and for reflexes and hope there is never a time that I have to use them on any living being.

"Philosophical Taoism was concerned with living in harmony with the environment and attaining the WAY through alchemy, exersise, meditation and martial arts, in places like Wudang mountain, where once(around the 14th century CE) the Tai Chi master Zhang Sefeng dwelt. No matter what the exact truth is concerning the origins of Tai Chi, the theory comes largely from philosophical Taoism" - Dan Docherty "Those who know, don't talk. "He who is in harmony with the Tao is like a newborn child. It's bones are soft, it's muscles are weak, but it's grip is powerful. It doesn't know about the union of male and female, yet it's penis can stand erect, so intense is it's vital power. It can scream it's head off all day, yet it never becomes hoarse so complete is it's harmony." ~Laozi

I like that your videos teach the practical application part of using nunchucks. I love doing the pretty stuff too but let's face it when it comes down to it they are indeed deadly weapons. Recently got two new sets of solid wood/chain chucks and am using them to get more proficient at doubles. Great video, my friend!

I've been using your videos as a means of exercising. I bought myself a foam set because I know I'd be the goof to knock himself out, haha. Great way to keep me moving. I'm a big guy too so I'm looking for any means to keep myself active and avoid a fate similar to some of my family members. I also feel I'll be able to use them effectively should the situation call for me to have to actually use them (I hope I never have to though, I like hugs more than anything lol). I'm 65 and in remission for throat cancer, but I am very active in the gym and with vegetarian diet, bicycle riding a couple miles a day and working my Bow Staff and now nunchucks I have made from PVC pipe which work good for now. We have a lot of degenerates in my area of Florida that will prey on the elderly and handicapped and I don't look my age so I step in to protect and help if I see something coming on. I know I can't match your lightning speed but I have already learned so much just on this video alone. My philosophy in live is that theres always more to learn no matter how old we are......unless your older then dirt! hahahahahahahaha

Great video. I find it difficult to keep the practice nunchaku from wobbling and getting it to go under my arm pit. My attachment line is about 4" long. The nunchaku is made of pvc with insulation covering the unit. They are 12" long. Is the attachment line a little too short ? Any advice would be appreciated.

Each person's hands are different. The nunchuk should be as long as your arm from your bicep to the middle of your hand. The rope or chain should be as wide as your palm. Any longer, they will come out of your hands during a handroll. Can anyone out there do a backwards reverse handroll?

One thing I've always wondered if someone runs at you while you're doing all this swinging, you'll hit them once it might hurt them abit but once they're up close your nunchucks are rendered useless
@WayneGichieGICHI3
@WayneGichieGICHI3 6 жыл бұрын
This could be true depending on your footwork with the Nunchaku. You're going to have to make adjustments depending on the distancing and range between you and your adversary. Similar to punching and kicking techniques. Your footwork sets up your punches and kicks. Nunchaku is just an extension of your hand.
@victorludorum3076
@victorludorum3076 10 жыл бұрын
is the nunchaku hitting you when it goes behind you back and behind your arm?
@WayneGichieGICHI3
@WayneGichieGICHI3 10 жыл бұрын
Yes Richard, the nunchaku is hitting behind the arms, bicep and behind the back, latissimus dorsi, Teres major and Infraspinatus muscles. The hits to your body are necessary and merely for transitioning moves which gives you the leverage, momentum and generate power and speed in the spins and strikes. For beginners depending on the nunchaku your using, rubber or wooden you are going to get sore in those areas. Through consistent training those muscles groups will get stronger, harden and immune to the hits. The nunchaku is an extension of the arms. Once you grasp the concept and practice daily it will become apart of your body. Remember you develop the mind and body through practicing slowly with steady reputation of movement, form and accuracy. Safe training my friend Osu!

I believe the best way is to hold them at the end to get more reach

+Solaire Of Astora yes you get like 2-3 inches more but if you hold it in the middle the grip is definitely stronger (especially when you hit something)

I mean that's the way the okinawans used them holding them at the bottom so must've been enough grip

+Solaire Of Astora More reach less power.

Not really if you swing them around for momentum or which is what your supposed to do with them cuz nunchaku are a flail then you get the most power holding them at the bottom if you tried holding at the bottom and in the middle you would feel more power and momentum holding them at the end

Solaire Of Astora That is wrong. Anyone who thinks that is a noob. You have better control and power from near the top. Bruce lee holds i in the middle because the rope it longer. 5-7 inch rope is near the top.

I incorporated some of the striking techniques from kyokushin into my practice, but i have never studied fully. My base is Shorin-ryu Karate. Naming just a few, i also trained in Taekwondo, Kungfu, Muay Thai, Brazilian Jiujitsu and boxing.
