Hürrem blames Suleiman embittering the fight between Selim and Bayezid. As Bayezid chases up the ones who has set a trap for him, Selim gets worried that he'll get disclosed. Suleiman confiscates Mahidevran's wealth because she has supported the revolt. Hürrem brings Selim to account after she learns that he has set the trap for Bayezid. Meanwhile, Fatma plays Nurbanu and Huricihan off against each other and turns the harem upside down. Suleiman orders that Kara Ahmed will be executed since he has taken up the revolt. Someone witnesses Gazanfer's love for Nurbanu that causes to be shed blood. Hürrem takes a vow to not to choose between his sons and chooses her nominee for throne.
At the age of 26, when he ascended to the throne, Sultan Suleiman aimed to build an empire more powerful than Alexander the Great and to render the Ottomans invincible. Throughout his 46-year reign, he became the greatest warrior and ruler of both East and West.
The young Suleiman received news of his succession to the throne during a hunting party in 1520. Unaware that he would be ruling a reign beyond his dreams, he left behind his wife son and took to the road with his close friend and companion Pargali Ibrahim to reach the Topkapi Palace in Istanbul. As they started their journey overland, an Ottoman ship set sail from Crimea in the Black Sea, bringing female slaves as gifts for the Ottoman palace… On this ship was Alexandra La Rossa, the daughter of a Ukrainian Orthodox minister, taken away from her family and sold to the Crimean palace. She had no idea that she would become Hurrem, wife of Sultan Suleiman and mother of princes, ruling the empire with him through bloodshed and intrigue.
As Sultan Suleiman conquered the world, his great passion for Hurrem would clash with his love for and trust in his closest friend and advisor, Grand Vizier Pargali Ibrahim, all set against the backdrop of the tension between Christian Europe and the Ottoman Empire in the 16th century.

Shout out to the director and cameraman here. Apart from the marvellous acting, the camera angles add so much to the dramatic tension of the scene, e. g. for the first part of the scene there are tilts and high angle shots which add a sense of disorientation' emphasising how Nurbano is in a weak position with her life in the balance, whilst the camera looks up at Hurrem, illustrating her power. Then when Nurbano blackmails Hurrem, the camera angle switches to look down at Hurrem from above, to reflect how the power balance has shifted (well, at least for the moment). Just thought I'd focus on something random and give the camera crew some credit.

Great observation. I missed all of those nuances the first time around. The presentation certainly does give the viewer a feel for the shifts in the scene.

@@danawinslett7505 Thanks so much for the kind words Dana. I'm not always conscious of the production values because like most viewers I'm just absorbed by the acting and the plot. However, every now and then a scene like this will stand out because of the way in which it has been shot and edited. It just makes me think about the talent of the people behind the camera as well as in front of it. I have to admit that I also love the soundtrack. I think the music really played an integral part in making the show so successful.

@@kaigoukhongsai8880 Partially true but Hurrem at this point cannot risked anything. She is dealing with a lot and she knows Nurbanu is not her principal problem. Most importantly she doesn’t know if Nurbanu has powerfull connection such as Sokullu for example (her own servant). It is mostly why she doesn’t make it more serious than it can be. Lastly, she cannot risks anything. She is not in good terms with Suleyman at the moment. She is aware of how his changes and she doesn’t know if Nurbanu is not lying about the letters.

While almost everyone thinks this scene was unnecessary. I have a different opinion. 1) Hurrem is not in good terms with Suleyman and she is aware of Suleyman favoritism towards Selim. 2) Hurrem is also aware of Suleyman’s changes since Mustafa’s death and she cannot risk her sons’ survival while she openly knows their relationship with each others. 3) she is also aware that she is the only one, the only strong link that’s keeping Bayezid alive. 4) She might leave her revenge on Nurbanu for later but unfortunately Nurbanu is really smart and while everyone were busy with grieving, she was meticulously making connections with powerful people among Hurrem’s own circle. 5) Hurrem have no idea if the letters are vanished or no. Yes she was out without any consequences from other incidents but this time it is different. Not the same circumstances and not the same Suleyman. If she lives longer, yes maybe she could have taken her revenge. Unfortunately for her Nurbanu is not any concubine with no brain. I think it was interesting!!!

Honestly, what made it the most interesting to me is how easy it is to draw conclusions in that situation between Hurrem's interactions with Hafasa back when she herself was in a similar position. The show might have some narrative problems in places, but it's always been good at providing those contrasts.

Hurrem has been in control for a long time, and there is no one else who would dare to take her on like this. That's pretty shocking, even to someone who was impetuous in her youth. It certainly brought an interesting element into the story. More than a few of us dropped a jaw at Nurbanu's audacity. It was very good drama, and now we can't wait to see how the power struggle unfolds between these two women.

I realised I actually didn't have a problem with Hurrem, just with Meryem's Hurrem. Meryem is a GREAT actress and fun person and she did make me laugh at times but she created a bad image for a sultana...not regal and elegant, but hysteric and bratty even. I know it's an unpopular opinion, but Vahide has that power vibe without exaggerated gestures

@@wwanca3771 an actor can choose how to portray a character. The writers write it indeed, but the actor gives it life and can have great say in shaping the said character. It’s not about Hurrem being childish or sometimes straight up spoiled, which I understand because they wanted to show how she evolved and matured (she was a teenager when she arrived in the harem after all), but about how she was played, with all the hysteric screaming and sometimes extremely modern gestures which were not exact fit for a sultana. As I said before, I consider Meryem a great actress and I really like her off screen, I even enjoyed the funny cheeky sides of her Hurrem, but I feel she exaggerated at times. I can have this opinion and still like Meryem, not everything is personal you know 🙄

⁠@@BlueSwampyCraftI preferred Meryem’s portrayal of Hürrem more than Vahide. Her facial expressions translated her internal emotions of happiness, sadness and fear pretty well. Living in that era wasn’t fun at all and Hürrem is a human being eventually, she has the right to be happy, sad, scared, hysteric and angry. That’s why Mahidevran sounded more real and relatable to every woman today, the actress acted her frustrations professionally just like any natural woman. The image of that tough, emotionless evil queen is just a concept that Disney created and other historical shows inspired it. Unfortunately Muhtesem Yuzyil has fallen into that troop too.

It's not that confusing to understand literary comments from literal comments. I am Hurrem’s biggest fan but Nurbanu had no choice, I would do same too. And in real history Nurbanu would never dear something like this. Also She and Hurrem were close friends. All for drama here.

@@kikima258 I caught a few people complaining about it back then too, to be honest, but you're not wrong---a lot of the characters in this show have plot armor at odd times. The poisoning attempt by Mahidevran in the first season makes me think of this too. Sometimes the writers would stretch the drama just a little too much before remembering, "Whoops, can't let anything happen to this character!"

@@gunescelik4207 not in THIS instance. Nurbanu called Hurrem's bluff, and Hurrem took the hit because of what Nurbanu knew about her dealings. Once again, it was common knowledge that Hurrem hated Hurrichian. So who's to say what would've happened if Nurbanu revealed what she knew?! Hurrem knew she couldn't take that chance, so she caved.

With the Sultan being unpredictable and paranoid at this time in his life, who knew what might've happened. 😳 Hurrem knew she couldn't be too sure of him at this stage; he'd already ordered the execution of Mustafa and tried to shift the blame onto her and Rustem. He succeeded in getting Rustem banished. Think about it......

I keep seing people going like: Nurbanu is the best! Hey, Hurrem attacked Hatice! Actually, ya'll are wrong, wrong, wrong! First, with Hurrem being a hypocrite when she attacked Hatice Sultana once upon a time, that was Hatice's fault as she put a spell on Hurrem. However, that backfired. Second, with Nurbanu being the best, think about it! She killed two sultanas (well, Nazenin Sultana was technically Hurrem's fault) and Fahriye Hatun, who was just being loyal to Hurrem after Nubranu committed a huge crime by going against Hurrem's will and stealing her ring. Then Nurbanu attacking Hurichian and then claiming it to be an 'accident' and that Hurichian is 'jealous' is just wrong. Nurbanu should have never met with Gazanfer and it was mostly her fault. Nurbanu deserved it. Then, Nurbanu keeps using her children as an excuse to get her out of trouble is absolutely evil! You're children aren't an excuse, they're a gift. Absolutely horrid! Then, Nurbanu is a sly snake by always manipulating Selim. It says in Selim's biography that Nurbanu was one of the two people who mainly took care of state affairs. I dread for the people in that reign! Nurbanu isn't a pretty fairy, but a sly witch and Hurrem is very much innocent. Nurbanu shouldn't get good people's hearts and respect.
