Tbh, where you're graduating from also plays somewhat of a role. Every time I tell interviewers where i'm graduating from, they sit up straighter and lean forward. You can *feel* their interest in the air. That’s where you come in with your passion for the job and why you're applying for them. I straight-up told them I was aiming to become an NP and i wanted to work in their hospital for a specific department to gain experience to apply for the NP program. They didn’t seem any less interested. They actually wanted to hear more about my plans and why i wanted to do that, likely so they could recruit me within their network once i'd done the NP studies. I did remember this video, tho, and told them that i wasn't going to rush into being an NP and was going to stay with them at least 3-4 years to gain the needed experience. I got the job.

This is the problem with job interview... Say what they want to hear, interviewers only interested in reassurance. E.g you want to be a nurse or whatever you are applying for the rest of your life. They only interested in that temporary relief.. what's the point ??? Why go through all this stages to find the "right" person when all you want is the "correct" answer.. and look for someone who has the skills to frame answer or lie to you.. This whole interview system in my honest opinion is just a complete waste of time

I’m a nurse in Florida and most places already guarantee you a job without an interview

In my last job, I was hired to be a general worker, and ended up being the only trained machine operator and QC inspector, so I was quite literally running a department with the quality checks and proper procedure stuff (paperwork, health and safety stuff, etc) while also running all the machinary that was required, and I was put through a bunch of courses and different programs.. Now at my current job, I'm QC again, but I'm far to over-qualified for the role. Like in my interview, they asked why I was coming to them for a job, and I was like "I worked at [insert company name] doing QC and Machine Operating, so I came here wanting a change of scenery and something a little more relaxed." I was very straight to the point, and the lady interviewing me actually liked my answer because I was honest and because everyone knows the company I worked for, as it employs a rather large percentage of my countries population, but everyone also knows that they are super tough on their staff and only give job promotions to people who they see great potential in. It took me 6 weeks to get promoted to QC at my current job, and I've been happily running my second department for almost 5 months, and I'm only 21, so I hope to achieve more in the nearby future.

I'm in a different industry but I get to conduct many interviews. You'd be amazed how many people answer this question wrong. Several times I've heard... "I want to retire". Ummmm yea .. not a good answer. The latest one was "I want to move up to your job". I was a bit taken aback. The audacity. I'm all for ambitious staff but that was BOLD.

I think the best think prospective nurse employees can do is shadow shifts. This is especially true if you plan to work somewhere that wasn’t part of your schooling. I got my first nursing job from a co-op program that affiliated with my nursing school. I worked at that hospital as a student and then continued on after my graduation. It was great since I already knew the hospital and they knew me. Then I decided to move back to my home province, where I had barely even set foot in the local hospitals. I started just working for the agency to essentially investigate where I wanted to be. I eventually settled on a floor that had an IMCU program, since I wanted to be highly skilled, but was not interested in ICU or ventilators. I also knew that I liked the overall vibe of that unit, they had an affiliated clinic program, and they had plenty of OT. It’s hard to discover all the relevant info from an interview alone, and sometimes there are things you don’t even think to look into. I recently decided to leave IMCu after almost 10 years and I got my new job via a shadow shift. I knew i wanted a change, but I didn’t know where I wanted to go, I still like my job but the staffing shortages that meant “unlimited overtime” have now become less attractive (essentially exhausting) now that I am a dept free homeowner. I knew I wanted a similar vibe so I checked out the PACU as a shadow and they offered the job without an interview - while I’m sure my seniority helped, this is not unusual even for nurses a few years out. Calling a manager and asking about shadows tells them a lot about you, that you are looking for a good fit, which implies they aren’t just a quick stop to somewhere else you are going - they also get to see you work which can tell them much more than an interview would. I would strongly encourage any nurses whose looking for a job to shadow. The shifts are usually short, 2-4 hours, but im sure it could vary. Where I live the managers are mostly super eager to allow prospective nurses to shadow, and if they aren’t I would see it as red flag.

Amazing advice

Don’t encourage people to lie, be genuine and apply to places you actually want to work & can see yourself growing professionally. We all can change our minds but good intentions from the start goes a long ways.

Isit okay if I want to be in the same hospital but transfer to a different unit / specialty

Great answer - same logic applies to any job interview!

Lol @ me who straight up told them I would probably leave in a couple years because my ultimate goal is forensic nursing and that isn't feasible at my current (rural) location. also answered 3/5 of the questions poorly. still got the job

Sounds less than ambitious. New nurses should have ambition. Some organizations want their nurses to have their eye on the horizon. All of what this chick said should happen by year 3 and are a natural progression. I would be thinking.. as I am a hiring manager... that they will just be stuck has a half made nurse and will not do fantastic. Oh well. They will likely be in that spot forever.. likely be surpassed by new nurses that actually want to grow their careers.
