Whether you're fresh out of nursing school or a seasoned nurse looking for a career change, these interview tips are sure to put a fresh perspective in your mind about how to prepare and be yourself.
Be Yourself
This is the most important part of the interview. Let your personality shine! Laugh, tell a joke, share a personal story, and smile. This should help you feel more relaxed and calm during the interview. Remember, the people interviewing you were in your position at one point. They want someone who is authentic and that will be compatible with their patients and team members. So, just be you!
Do Your Research
Research the organization and unit you are applying for. You should have a basic understanding of the organization’s history, mission, and vision. You should also be familiar with the unit or department. Find out if they are known for anything or have received any types of awards or certifications.
Make a Portfolio
Don’t just have a resume. Have a portfolio! This will help you stand out from the other candidates and will show that you are prepared and organized. Be sure to leave them with a portfolio after the interview. This will allow the decision makers to share your portfolio with the team and will leave them with something to remember you by.
What to include in your portfolio:
Resume
Letter(s) of Recommendation
Certifications (CPR, ALCS, PALS, CCRN, etc.)
Research or Papers
Volunteer / Community Service
Participation in Professional Associations
Remember Keywords
Have a list of keywords that you want to bring up during your interview. Here is a list of my recommendations:
Teamwork
Collaboration
Effective
Efficient
Patient Centered
Culturally Competent
Responsible
Practice Interview Questions
-Each answer should have a beginning, middle, and end
-Always end each question with something positive
-Silence is OK. Feel free to pause and think about your answer. Don’t rush.
-Be prepared for specific questions relating to the unit you are applying for. (ie. Oncology, pediatrics, OB, surgery, ER, etc.)
Examples of interview questions:
Tell me about yourself.
What made you choose nursing and why did you choose this department?
Describe a time when you disagreed with a co-worker. How was the issue resolved?
Explain a time when you went above and beyond your basic responsibilities?
Collaboration is key in healthcare. Explain a time when you collaborated with others. What was the situation and outcome?
Mistakes happen. Explain a time when you made an error and how you handled it?
Here, we inspire innovation. Describe a time when you had to be innovative.
What is your greatest strength? What is your greatest weakness?
Ask Questions
This is your chance to ask questions. And please do!! This will show that you are engaged and interested in learning more about the position.
Examples:
What is the patient to nurse ratio?
What is the orientation process?
Any opportunities to participate in a unit practice council?
When should I expect to hear from you?
Always Follow-Up
Send an email to the HR coordinator and interviewer within a few hours after your interview. Thank them for taking time out of their day to learn about your past experience and career goals. This will also give you chance to tell them anything important you may have left out during your interview.
Another reason to follow-up is if you don’t hear back within a reasonable timeframe about the status of your interview. Send the HR coordinator or person who interviewed you a friendly email asking about the status. Don’t feel bad about this, especially if there was a time expectation that was set.
Practice!!!
This is KEY! Always practice before each and every interview. Rehearse with a family member or friend. Practice your introduction, answering questions, asking questions, and using your keywords. Do not over practice because you don’t want to sound stiff or over rehearsed. You are not trying to memorize a script. Instead, you should practice to get comfortable.

As a seasoned nurse, I would not recommend putting a copy of your nursing license or certifications in a portfolio. These are things that should be asked on a job application. With identity theft, someone could take your portfolio and pass it off as their own. If you are offered the job and you accept, then HR will verify your license with the board of nursing anyway and ask for copies of your certifications, etc. All this will be done via email. If you think that after an interview a portfolio is kept, think again. Most of them end up in the trash. If you want to bring a portfolio with you, then ask the person interviewing if they would like to keep the portfolio. If they are interested in you, then they will want a copy. A portfolio can be a nice thing to do but a good resume is also key. The best advice I can give you is to be yourself in the interview, answer honestly, and most importantly do your research into the organization and the unit and keep an open mind. Otherwise, Nurse Blake good job on the video.

Great tips. I had a phone interview for a MSICU position & even though I didn’t get the position (they wanted experience) the recruiter sent my resume directly to a nurse manager of another unit & told me to expect a response within a week as the position hasn’t even been posted yet. Thanks ❤️

jenrnmom I have a question about that: everyone is saying thank you notes are great and I want to get on that train...but where/how do you send a hand-written thank you note? Would I include it to the small stack of papers I hand to them with my portfolio? Would I mail to the hospital’s unit? Would I personally give it to the unit the day after the interview? I know it seems like a silly question, but I live an hour away from the nearest hospital so everything I do that involves going to town requires planning & strategy. Thanks in advance.

In a way, I am lucky because I finished a very good nursing school and I live in a country where there are a lot more nursing positions than actual nurses. I got hired .... on the spot. The interview was pretty extensive and included questions about every aspect of the care. Medication, nursing techniques, nursing assessments and DX, teamwork, patient (they don't use patient but Person) and family interactions, care plan, tine management and care priority. They even gave me a test to calculate Rx, to make a treatment plan for some types of wounds etc. My interview felt more like a final exam to be honest. In all this mess there was a question that got me hired : how do you approach a clinical situation? The answer they were looking for is basically is a 17th century ideea: the scientific method ( observation, hypothesis via induction etc). The patient centered care is a big deal and the author of the video is right. Most modern nursing schools provide a care model with the Person and his needs at the center. So just integrate the model that you used in school in your interview and you will be fine. Another big deal in an interview is how you deal with conflicts. Healthcare system is a high stress environment and they want to make sure you can navigate this stress without becoming a problem for the org.

Nurse Blake: Your interviewing tips would not only work well not only in nursing, but for other professional positions as well. I have been on both sides of the desk many times. My number one tip: BE POSITIVE! If you cannot be positive with the interview at hand, it’s probably not going to work. Be positive! Be yourself!

Just a word of encouragement: Remember that Jesus loves you and He's coming soon. If you have not made a decision to follow Him, don't wait because tomorrow is promised to no one. Satan wants us to believe we have all the time in the world, when we actually don't. Even he knows his time is short (Revelation 12:12) Lastly, the National Sunday Law is about to be enforced upon us. It involves the Mark of the Beast. The Beast is a religious & political system, which includes the Pope and his followers. Their sign of authority or seal is Sunday observance because they claim to have authority over the Bible and they admit that Sunday worship is their mark of great power. (Revelation 13:6) (see Catholic Record, Sept.1, 1923). They will seek to enforce worship on all. (See Revelation 13). IT is their plan to force all to come together, and to worship on the 1st day of the week (Sunday) and have that as the ONLY DAY of worship. They want everyone to forsake God's law which includes keeping the Sabbath, and accept man's tradition. When it is *enforced*, and people accept Sunday worship INSTEAD of accepting the Seventh Day Sabbath (Saturday) as the Lord's Day and only true day of worship, they will receive the mark of the Beast. The system seeks to promote false worship. So because Sunday sacredness is their mark of power; God's seal is found only one place, and it's in His 10 commandments, specifically the 4th (see Exodus 20:8-11; Revelation 14:7; Revelation 7:1-4) Why: It tells us the Name, the Title and Territory. Name: Lord thy God Title: Creator Territory: Heaven and Earth. So only those who truly love God will keep all His commandments and will be sealed for Him, for eternity. (See Revelation 12:17) So, it's our duty to keep God's ten commandments, including the 4th which talks about the Sabbath because in the end, we have to chose 1 side. Those who receive God's seal will be saved and those who receive the mark of the Beast will be destroyed eternally. It has always been about worship. Now is the time to be serious about our soul, and not to believe in false doctrine, but to accept God's truth from the Bible (see Isaiah 8:20). By God's grace, let us be ready for the time that is just before us.

Hi Blake I did these tips, but I feel I did overkill, the interview was only 30 min long. I showed confidence, intrigue and showed desire for growth etc. I feel I bombed it. I don't know what to think because I hope I didn't come off as aggressive. I have a strong personality, but as a man you would be praised for this; I feel I am not as a woman.
