@@shelbycamp3826understand the concepts, don’t just memorize. It’s impossible. Do research on these concepts (KZfaq videos, ATI practice questions and rationales, Quizlet, textbook, take notes, review PowerPoints, break it down in your own terms, create memory tricks, study guides). I’d suggest to study everyday but take breaks, quiet environments, peacefully. I hope you’re acing it!

Typically, diagnosis is would have to do with the nurse's understanding of the patient's general cause of symptoms and/or any risks the patient may be facing (e.g., risk to airway, tissue ischemia, electrolyte imbalances, etc.). So you would be looking at answer choices that have to do with the general cause of the patient's issue, risks to the patient, safety risks, etc. Hope that helps! --Meris :)

You're exactly right! In most cases in nursing, there are multiple right actions to take, and nursing school tries to help prepare us to be competent nurses by giving us those early critical thinking skills of what is "the most right" answer. It is unlike any other education I ever received! But as tough as it was, I really do think that it helped me to be a better nurse starting off! --Meris :)

Hi Kanesha, thank you for this excellent and important question. I absolutely agree with you, and appreciate you taking the time to bring this up! Our cards are made to go along with what most nursing curricula teach, and what is testable for the NCLEX at this time. We are always updating and revising our content based on evidence-based practice and changes within nursing school curricula, and strive to provide the most correct information along with what is actively being taught and tested. And for that reason, this information was included on this card, supported by peer-reviewed studies, in the hopes to cover what is currently being taught and tested. On this card, we are not saying that _perpetrators_ of homicide are likely to be Black men, but rather that those who are most at risk for being a _victim_ of homicide are men (of any race), Black individuals, and young adults. This information was taken from the Bureau of Justice Statistics on homicide trends in the US. We did not identify any risk factors for being someone who carries out or causes violence on these flashcards for the exact reasons you stated in your comment. It is hard to fully expand upon the information in just a small flashcard, and I hope that I can do justice to the discussion of community violence through an intersectional lens when making the videos for this section of the deck. All of us at Level Up RN are incredibly big believers that nursing is political, and it is our job to call out unjust and inequitable information and treatment of patients. I have not yet gotten to record my Community health playlist, but when I do, one of the things that I plan to discuss is that although we talk about the social determinant of health, we aren't adequately discussing what that truly means. In almost all cases, it is not the minority a person that belongs to that is the risk itself, but rather the ways in which society has grouped, gentrified, failed to support, treated, and marginalized people within that minority. For instance, as a member of the LGBT+ community, I am "more at risk" for suicide, substance abuse, homelessness, and assault than a heterosexual individual, according to the literature...but really that isn't due to who I am, but how members of my community are treated and undersupported by society at large. For that same reason, a Black individual might be "more at risk" for being a victim of homicide, but we need to fully discuss why that is--there's nothing inherent about a person's skin tone that makes them more susceptible to homicide! So when we discuss race, socioeconomic status, education, etc. as social determinants of health, we really need to be discussing how the health of our patients is directly impacted by how we as a society, and we as nurses and healthcare professionals treat members of those communities as well, and I hope to be able to more fully explore these topics in the video playlist. I will be recording my Community videos in the near future, and I will do my best to adequately explain all of this and discuss these really important points that you have brought up, along with providing additional resources for learners to understand more about how medicine and racism are linked, and how we can best work to be anti-racist healthcare professionals!
