A 22-year-old nursing student was found dead in her boyfriend’s car at a Mississippi graveyard on July 3. Bricen Rivers, the longtime boyfriend of Lauren Johansen, was released on bond after allegedly beating Johnsen while they were on vacation together in Nashville. Johansen’s father, respected surgeon Lance Johansen, pleaded with the judge to keep Rivers locked up, stating he believed Rivers would kill her if he were released. When Rivers posted bail, Johansen went missing. When police tracked down Johansen’s car at a cemetery, Lance Johansen’s belief became a reality. Law&Crime’s Jesse Weber breaks down the tragic story with criminal defense attorney Danielle Jackson.

Wrong. Bail is expressed in the 8th Amendment to the Constitution and may not be “excessive.” There may be grounds to deny bail, but you can’t apply a blanket denial of bail whenever a defendant is accused of a violent crime. If that were the case, then innocent people could languish in jail for months for being accused of participating in a street fight before they had their day in court. Yes, the system failed here, but you can’t fix the system by making impossible demands.

Leaving your abuser is the most dangerous time for the victim. They should not have let him step foot out of jail without an ankle monitor. The system failed this poor young woman. I am assuming no charges were filed for the previous incidents, which is a whole other issue. Relying on the victim to press charges just does not work. If there are visible injuries and enough evidence, the abuser should be locked up and the state should press charges. The way the system is handling these type of crimes is obviously not working....we need to figure something else out. Ankle monitor...microchip....shock collar....whatever it takes.

People, If someone is verbally or physically abusive once, just once, only once. Break up immediately and never talk to that person again, it is clear the system wont protect you. There is no reason for you to tolerate those types of things

Totally agree, if they hit you once no matter their reason why, they will hit you a thousand more times. Once is the only red flag you need, ,do not contact them or explain why you are breaking up or leaving, never do that....get support in place and leave in silence. Never ever take phone calls or accept any other contact from this person again.

When I told my abuser I'd go into hiding to evade him, he said he would "hurt" my frail elderly parents to force me to come back . They couldn't even get an order of protection based on the threats, which would have allowed them to call the police as soon as he pulled up. I literally had to wait for my parents to die, because I couldn't take that risk. I doubt he's the only abuser who has used that threat. Parents, children and other special people become pawns for abusers to intimidate and manipulate their victims.

It is statistical FACT that the most dangerous time for a victim of domestic abuse is when the relationship ends and they leave/escape/seek protection. I genuinely believe that any DV case where an actual, legal criminal charge is involved, the suspected individual should under no circumstances be allowed to post bail, precisely for reasons like this. Failures at every level of this case and so heartbreaking.
