After three years in the making, here's the Nutnfancy review on one the world's best dual sport motorcycles. You will see riding video in many adventures and testing protocols on the impressive KTM 500 EXC, both in dirt and ultra hooligan Motard configuration. This review will also cover its little brother the KTM 350 EXC-F. POU, components, ergos, value, speed/power, efficiency, range, cargo capacity, mods, and several other fascinating discussions ensue. Instead of some lightweight 5 min review that leaves many questions answered, this free Nutnfancy review is feature length. The 500 EXC is hands down a 5 star bike, lightweight, sassy, fun, impeccable in the dirt, totally street legal, able to embarrass most other dirt bikes (especially KLRs), and a source of envy from your riding friends. This is top rec'd motorcycle for my adventure-minded friends in TNP.
Check out these TNP adventures where the KTMs were ridden:

Glad to see this. I've learned a lot about firearms and camping from TNP over the years but my biggest passion in life has always been motocross. Been riding/racing since I was a little kid so this is right in my wheelhouse. Hope y'all continue to have fun on the bikes and, most importantly, be safe!

just my 2 cents on the double take mirrors, i have them and love them, they stay in place, the trick is to dip the bottom ball into plasti dipp paint, so the rubberized ball stay in place with minimum strenght on the screws, and absorb a part of the vibration as well. Great review!

I used to ride a Honda XR650L. It was dependable, economical, and...well that's about it. Then I climbed aboard the KTM 350 EXC-F and KTM 500 EXC dual sports. Mind blown. The Honda seemed like an old fashioned tractor by comparison. I was laughing out loud at the exhilaration of these race-born but still street legal dirt bikes. They both possess some strange quirks (see vid) but on the whole they are probably the best lightweight enduro bikes in the world. I compare all comers to them!

hey nutn! I'm thinking about getting a motorcycle for daily commute to work. I've put alot of thought into it, did my research on types of bikes for starters and the whole 9 yards. I've spent hours looking into things i should know before i start riding. but now i have NO idea what protective gear to get...i get the basics from helmets to elbow pads and everything..but there's so much out there i don't know what's junk and what's not. so i figured I'd ask a reliable source..and here i am! what brands and/or types of protective gear should i go with to keep me safe?...especially as a beginner.

When it comes to protection, are there any significant things you should wear when riding dual sport terrain versus road? It looked like pretty much the same. I'm asking as I am at16:00 in the video if you happen to mention it later. @nutnfancy
@nutnfancy 8 жыл бұрын
+Todd OConnor This thing can totally do it, but you'll be doing a lot of maintenance to keep it healthy. It has a tiny oil reservoir owing to the racebike heritage, and pretty short intervals to keep it trucking. Fun-wise, it's great, but you have no real subframe to carry luggage or park your gear once you're at work. No ABS is kind of a dealbreaker for my commuter stuff, too. I know real manly men and super skilled super sports speed stars can brake reliably without it, but commuting bleary-eyed at 0500 hrs when it's cold and dark makes me glad for all the whiz-bang computer intervention I can get. If you're looking at off-road capable commuter stuff, a 690 enduro R can handle a touratech luggage set and a windshield, and it's pretty light for the power. ~70hp out of that single is good enough for it. My fave commuter bike though? My old man special! An FJR1300. Freakishly comfy, complete wind protection (I like saving my hearing and rocking out en-route, zero wind noise is awesome) and plenty of lockable space. And good power, braking, etc. My dream dirt/street commuter? 1190 Adventure. It's a tall horse to wrangle, but damn it all if it doesn't rock the power/comfort/accessibility balance. -Doodle

Would you ever recommend a "scrambler" (mainly the triumph scrambled) as a more streetable offroad bike? I feel like it could get more distance with the larger tank than the ktm but im not sure
@nutnfancy
@nutnfancy 8 жыл бұрын
We'd have to try it, but at that point, it's all pretty much in the same category. 400-600 lbs, semi-street bike, they all have fairly similar capabilities no matter what the brochure says. Depends on the accessory setup you want, but our experiences with a pretty good spread of bikes (sadly not a huge amount of triumphs, we're not bike journos) the most dirt-capable for street/dirt biking have been KTM. While reliability may not be there yet, the suspension setup, design philosophy, power delivery, and build quality does it well. Either the 500, 690, or 1190 would pretty much take the pick for our most-recommended bikes. Like guns, though, it's kinda hard to go wrong! The specs aren't too disparate throughout the industry. I would say I'd love to try out a well-dirtied hyperstrada over the scramblers, but you could definitely tell it wasn't anything other than a sportbike. :( Doodle

KTM has had the single cam motor in the EXC line since 2008. Its very easy to remove valve cover, in 6th gear rotate rear wheel until at TDC. then check all 4 valve clearance. I check twice a year to set a base line, then when they start to move, overhaul them before the grenade.

I would recommend a Rekluse Core EXP 3.0 to you if you plan on doing more to your bike. It comes in handy during those really tight woods sections or technical hills where perfect clutch control is necessary. As a side note, make sure you are keeping up on maintaining your wheels. I had a set of Warp 9 wheels on my old 450 and the spokes would come loose all the time. I ended up completely destroying them. Get yourself a Tusk spoke torque wrench from Rocky Mountain ATV/MC and check spoke torque after every ride.

Would you consider buying one of the new Honda Africa Twins instead of a KTM? And did you hear about the "new" Montesa 4RIDE? It's an..."enduro" (more a trail bike with a saddle and a larger fuel tank) and weighs just 187lbs, it's pretty expensive for what it is though.
@nutnfancy
@nutnfancy 8 жыл бұрын
I was just looking at getting one, and I just couldn't get into it. It may be nice, but it's still 534 lbs wet, before throwing all the trail equipment on. 95hp is fine in the dirt, but when I'm driving 4-8 hours on interstate to get to the trail, I'll take every ounce of power I can get. Add in the 1190's variable suspension and supermoto feel and there was no comparison for me. I just don't see the africa twin having a whole ton of staying power, the DCT is cool, but it doesn't really advance the field at all. It's not super light, it's not super powerful, and the suspension-however great in the dirt- doesn't rewrite the book. Everyone I talk to tells me I'm wrong, but it seems like anything else honda puts in their bike catalog... reliable, but not stirring. Capable, but not excellent. From looking at the specs, I'm guessing it's going to be a lot closer in feel to a V-strom 1000 than much else, just with better suspenders. NF has higher hopes for it, but when I decided to pitch my Strom I just couldn't get excited for it. The only problem with the KTM is it uh...may strand you sometime, somewhere, for totally arbitrary reasons. I've been trying to get an africa for testing, but not many are even in the country yet, so who knows. If you see it, it would be cool to be totally proven wrong, but if I'm paying out the ass for a bike loan, I wanna be excited when I look outside... lean-angle sensitive TC, switchable power modes, and instant dirt mode for the shocks do it more for me. Nutn tells me I'm too harsh on it, though. So there's that. :/ -Doodle

nutnfancy Thanks for the very comprehensive response Doodle, I really appreciate it! :) I get where you're coming from, the Africa Twin is definitely a pretty beefy machine but compared to my 800cc F650GS (good job with the naming btw BMW) I can tell you the Africa Twin really knows how to hide its weight, it felt lighter than the BMW and the gearbox was incredibly smooth, although I missed the "first gear clunk" my BMW always gave me. I can't speak for the DCT model though. I can imagine the DCT to be something relaxing, but I hate automatic transmissions in cars aswell so why would I enjoy it on a motorcycle. If you get the chance you really have to try it out, it might not look that spectacular on the paper but it's actually a surprisingly capable machine! We actually just took in a 2014 with only 233 miles on it on trade at work. Guy bought a GSX-S750. We sold the KTM a few days later for $8200.

2:05 Anyone else remember that Moab smooth hill video? I think it was an older Bronco, white, that lost its brakes on the way down.

It's there from the factory. Just a retainer to keep it from coming down in hard landings when g forces might bring ot into the down position.

Why do so many say the 350 is better for the dirt as it is "lighter" even tho they weigh the same (or very close) ?

Hey Nutn I love your vids. I am just getting interested into Motorcycles and my mom and dad have rode motorcycles off and on all there life and I want to follow in there footsteps. I was wondering what do you suggest for a beginner motorcycle. I am a smaller framed guy (5'6" 120-130 lbs and am weak) I wanted a lightweight bike that could be used on highways and as a daily commuter. ( I don't know what minimum cc for highway us in Minnesota) I cannot afford a new motorcycle so the price point would be less than $3500 and is used. I do not have a Motorcycle license yet but I would like to get one and start saving up for a bike. Also with the information provided what would you suggest for a Dual Purpose Motorcycle for a beginner. Thanks Nutn and Tactical Doodle for all the great videos proud to be a Triple Owl.

Springfieldm14 308winchester I would consider that but that's not an option for me to go purely off-road for a few years but I will practice more off-road when I get a bike so thanks for the suggestion.

nutn, I always wondered what kind of computer you have, because you upload 45m videos on a regular basis, and even my very high end computer would get destroyed trying to render videos like that...

Renthal Fat Bars should come stock with all of them. Since 2004 Ktm really up'd their game with grips handlebars, even exhaust and of course brembo brakes & the amazing hydraulic clutch.

+Nyk14 Their spec off the lot is pretty good- it'd better be, for the price! It depends on what you're into, really. In a way, I could see myself going up to slightly thicker and wider bars on it, even flatter, and being pretty happy. The skinny grips have grown on me, though. I just wish I could get a dished out saddle for it. I love the little hyperstrada's launch pad, it put you in a pretty aggressive position for street riding, but I'd have to do a lot of foam cutting and experimentation to get it up and running. -TD

Right? I used to race motocross and my stock 125cc two stroke was like 5k. That's why I went with it because it came stock with renthal fat bars,grips, chain, v-force reed valve, excel rims, brembos and I think a Twin Air filer. The only thing that didn't carry over to your bikes and the one I had is the linkage rear suspension but as your pops put it he doesn't race so it might not make such a huge difference to him as it did for me in whoop sections.
