The nice thing about this is that it can be used where electricity isn’t available. The difference between “just right” and “too fine” is kind of dependent upon how the items will be used.

I have a similar product that I got for about $20. I will say this: If you are preparing large amounts of vegetables, it definitely saves time. If you are making a meal for one or two, it doesn't due to the setup time. I used it to make food for 4 days at a time and it cut my time in half.

Christy's Cooking Channel I'm the same way. Nothing truly replaces a knuckle buster. However, getting older sucks. Now that my hands just can't do that anymore, I bought a knock off of this about 6 months ago, and it does what I need it to- mostly grating cheese. I've learned to use it for other things, like making scalloped potatoes, or chopping onions. I agree with James, that the finest blade is almost useless, but have found it's useful for drier things or juicing things with a higher water content. Clean up is important, and having used my momma's Kitchen Magician, I think that was a little easier to clean, but the Nutri-Slicer fits easily into a drawer when broken down. That definitely makes it worth the $12 I spent on Ebay. Cheers!

Back in the 70s we bought a Rival product that was almost the same thing, except it was all metal but for the rubber vacuum base and it worked much better than this thing. It had 5 different blade inserts, and also came with a meat grinder with two different grinder blades, fine or coarse. We ground a lot of meat with that thing. It worked great and never came loose from the countertop. This is a pale imitation of that device and as usual, with almost 100% plastic parts, bound to either break and/or end up in the cabinet gathering dust. Here's the proper ad campaign = Coming SOON to your local Thrift Store....

Great review! This thing definitely looks promising. Those rubber seal things that are supposed to stick a device to a table are notorious for "un-sticking". I have a number of crafting devices (die cutters etc) that employ the same method for making the device stable....and at best you tend to get a few minutes at most. Sometimes dampening the rubber helps a bit, but usually you just have to "re-stick" it every few minutes to keep it stable, I've just learned to deal with it! I use a lot of walnut meal in cookie recipes and this thing would be grate (get it?...grate/great...lol...yeah, umm) for this. I tend not to like food processors, they are huge and I hate to clean them.

Lettuce, cabbage and onions all have a very high water content ... they rarely work well when cut, sliced or chopped very, very small ... more mush than anything else. When grated or sliced using a larger cut, they work much better. When grating or slicing each of them, if you cut across the layers instead of into the side of the layers, you will get a much better result. Any fruit or vegie that grows in layers should be cut across the layers instead of into the larger surface of the layers.

Looks like a manual version of the Salad Shooter! Same three blade configuration and all. You really need to use the slicing blade when you're shredding cabbage for coleslaw or sauerkraut. Works perfectly. The only thing the smaller of the two grating blades is really good for is grating hard cheese (parmesan, etc.). or grinding nuts practically to a nutmeal. Try the larger grater or even the slicing blade for larger chunks of walnuts. Love your reviews!
@donmakaveli2227
@donmakaveli2227 5 жыл бұрын
The reason things get so mushy and inconsistent in sizes are that the "blades" are not sharp enough. They are crushing, rather than cutting. So this is definitely a low quality product.

The amount of pressure and the consistency of the pressure makes a huge difference in the results. The chopper ... one with the smallest holes is best used with more solid food (nuts, very cold hard cheese and even hard dry bread). Now, having said that, it can also be used to make 'mush' of your veggies for your baby/toddler and/or someone with no teeth. OR a fast cook when added the last minute to soups ... retains more nutrients, flavor and fiber. ;-P

Notes: 1. Apple slicer would be great for apple pie filling. or potatoes for au gratin. 2. I've never encountered a suction cup bottom on a device that actually worked. my familiy had several different types over the 80s and 90's and they apparently haven't improved on the concept. 3. The fine (chopping?) blade looks like it could be good for very dense but not hard foods. Question: is this study enough to grind ice? Or more likely, frozen fruit?

The apple slices are way too thin for apple pie. Perfect size slices for apple pie is about 1/8". These were half that size so you'll end up with a mushy pie for sure. Sometimes you just can't beat a good old fashioned sharp knife.

Drier veggies seem to work better for the slicer and the grading blade. I am not surprised that you have to press harder for different veggies. This seems like a very good device for a quick and easy solution for chopping up veggies for salads and stir fries.

As a caregiver for the elderly I can say that people without teeth often miss the taste of foods they can no longer chew. This product may make those flavors accessible to them again. If you’ve been deprived of something you love, flavor will always trump texture. Don’t discount something as useless just because you don’t need it. There are plenty of folks out there who may need it.

For this and any items that "stick" with a vaccuum, moisten the bottom with the wipe of a sponge. The seal to the table will be better. I had a Salad Shooter that had similar grinders and the small one was best used for nuts, ice, or something you needed a fine grind on. The "chopper" was best for most other uses except celery and cabbage...the slicer is best for that with the grain of the cabbage perpendicular to the blade and the celery placed pretty much the same way.

I was gifted the NutriSlicer about four years ago. We were so excited to try all of the blades. I totally dislike the slicing blade, it made mush of the cucumbers, squash, etc. that we were slicing. We LOVE both the shredding blades for cheese. We only buy block cheese and have saved lots of money shredding our own cheese. We most use the smaller shredding blade for finely shredded cheeses. We too find it frustrating that it doesn't always stay suctioned to the counter, ours is granite, although sometimes if you slightly wet the bottom of it, it suctions better. Sadly, just last week the support for the blade holder broke right above where it slides in. I found your review by searching to see where we could purchase another one, because we miss it and hand grating cheese is exhausting.

Something you never see advertised is a "Salad Shooter." We love it for grating cheese, carrots, and cabbage. We don't really use it for anything else, but for those three things it's a champ!!!

In the 80's they had the salad shooter which was pretty much the same. It was hand held and electronic.

I think you sold me on this product. I make my own laundry soap, and part of my soap consists of grating a full bar of Pink Zote Soap. That is a pain to do with a regular hand grater. I might also buy one for the kitchen.

I have one! I bought it 3-4 years ago, not from Seen On TV. It's not hand-cranked, it's electric. Very handy. Has 5 cones, with different colours: fine and coarse grather, fine, thick and rough slicers. It's smaller, both the machine and the cones. It's great on cheese and potatoes. It comes handy when you're making latkes. Worked better on harder cheese. Like the video, I tried it on onion, with the large grater, not so great.

I'm surprised you didn't say this is from the 80s or something because I grew up with something that looked a heck of a lot like that, only the base was made of metal and had a larger lever for suction cups.

Very thorough review, as always. I think for small, less strong people like me some items would be hard to grate. And I can't help thinking that one day the handle is going to snap and fly across the room.

My girlfriend picked up this exact same item at the goodwill store. It was even in the same box as it was shipped in. The item was clean. No excess food in it. You can tell it was used because the plastic hopper had showed wear, example, very thin scratches on it. In her opinion it works fine. She uses it to make coleslaw. It also takes a little more time to clean it . ( More parts ) I'm old school. I prefer the metal square slicing device with 4 different cutting edges that my grandmother used. And it's easy to clean. I just use a toothbrush. But hay, she only paid 2 bucks for it and she's happy and the last time I checked it still works.

Hi thee, I recently bought this slicer for us as we all cook and use utensils in the kitchen. It grated cheese in a whizz, it looks good for what it is, yes it does slip on the counter just take your time! I think the shredder is just a finer version of the large hole grater , sometimes I like fine grated cheese. It might not work for a hard cheese just be careful. The slicer could work great for beetroot or potatoes as shown. It can go with on outings in case there is no grater and you wish to cook yourself. Buy it to use, don't buy is you are a fussy chef!! Review was great, thank you.

One thing I noticed is it matters the orientation of the onion and cabbage to the grating blades! The chopping blade was having trouble because of the way you put the onion and cabbage in the feeder!

Oh wow... I have a Kitchen Magician. It was my dad's, & he gave it to me when I got my first apartment. I can say the suction cup base doesn't lift off the counter like the nutri slicer does. I was expecting to see you grate some parmesan with the "chopping" blade, as the tiny holes seem best suited for hard / dry foods (like the walnuts).

I have the electric one that's very similar only it was called The Salad Shooter. I use it when I grate partially cooked potatoes and I also use it for grating cheese. It works well to do both of those. They are nice if you have a lot of stuff to cut and chop or grate. Thanks for the review.

Presto’s salad shooter still looks best to me. It’s electric, not super expensive, has multiple blades, and ours have lasted for years and years. We use it mostly to shred or slice cheese, potatoes, carrots, and zucchini, but have used it on other things as well. It can get clogged by certain things, but it’s super easy to clear again and you can notice the clogging immediately. Plus it’s pretty small.

A few months back me and the wife ordered the nutrislicer. Now don't get me wrong as far as the performance of the neutral slicer for shredding cutting your vegetables with it it does a really good job the only thing is that it's very difficult to shred cabbage for coleslaw is the cabbage really gets jammed up inside the drum and the outer plastic container. The only big problem that I see with the neutral slicer is the suction base does not hold as soon as you begin to use the neutral slicer it begins to start wandering around on your top of your cabinet now my cabinet is a smooth surface so you would think that it would really stick to it when you turn the little knob for the suction plate to hold it in place. I would have to say that I would give the neutral slicer a two and a half score due to the fact that the suction plate really sucks because it fails to hold the nutrislicer in place while you're using it.

Two things: the smaller hole is more of a grater. Perfect for Parmesan. The one with the biggest hole is good for cheddar or things to make coleslaw. I like the slicer for potatoes the most so you can make your own chips in the air frier.
