Today's interview is with Lisa Mosconi, PhD. She is the associate director of the Alzheimer's Prevention Clinic at Weil Cornell Medical College in New York. Prior to that she served as the director of the Nutrition and Brain Fitness Lab at New York University School of Medicine.
Dr. Mosconi holds a dual PhD degree in neuroscience as well as nuclear medicine from the University of Florence, Italy and is board-certified in integrative nutrition.
I think you will really enjoy this interview and learning about her new book, Brain Food (amzn.to/2WblOLo), which not only looks at nutrition but also leverages the science of nutritional genomics and even the emerging science relating to the role of the microbiome in brain health. The book provides recommendations that we can all use with respect to the foods we eat and, interestingly, she does challenge some of our long-held notions.
I hope you enjoy this discussion.

Thank you David, sweet library! Appreciate your work wholeheartedly. This video was the straw that broke the back of my plant based ideology, from a culmination of researching health/wellness. Brain health being a priority for me; Especially as a former collegiate football player, semi pro skateboarder, and other rather significant head trauma from being hit by a car while biking, and a couple snowboarding incidents, neurodegenerative brain disease is something I should start dealing with while I am still young. Exhausting most all plant based options,Hemp seeds, chia seeds dark chocolate, etc - I now realize adding some eggs, butter/ghee and salmon will be an excellent thing to experiment with.

You may be interested in reading the book “Ketotarian” by functional medicine doctor Will Cole. It is mostly a plant based ketogenic diet with inclusion of eggs and fish. His website is drwillcole.com.

Dr. Lisa Mosconi got the best of two worlds - she is both such a beauty and distinguised scientist. If you have an opportunity to continue this discussion, it will be great to learn more about her opinion on healthy diet. Thank you for the interview!

I absolutely applaud Dr Mosconi for her discussion of ideas and research. It reinforces and supports largely what I have adopted as my and family's lifestyle journey especially hearing for the first time a discussion about fish roe from the western academic community. Had learnt of its many cognitive benefits alongwith seaweed and adopted it from a Japanese sushi cookbook long time ago ;) A few other ideas I do not subscribe to for example drinking wine out of religious reasons, and choose my resveratrol from other alternatives:) Thank you so much Dr Perlmutter for this awesome engaging and beneficial interview.

Yes, the brain needs glucose but that does not imply we need to est foods that are turned into glucose. The body through gluconeogenesis can produce the glucose the brain needs.

And food questionnaires do not take food combinations into consideration. Is it the meat or saturated fat that causes health issues or is it combining fats with carbohydrates?

@27,m On fat. Yes, but Bredeson's diet is mostly plant based, uses time restricted eating, advocates fish, and is only mildly keto... So far as I know it does not involve adding boluses of fat. But good disussion...

Thanks. I am confused though. Dr Mosconi says glucose is vital for brain function and that glucose cant be replaced - yet the keto low carb diet demonizes glucose. Please can you explain. Thank you

Still gonna eat a pound of grass fed beef or so a day, feeling better with more meat than I do with less. That and some salmon and shrimp too as well as avocados and walnuts and olive oil.
