One bottle of water, one of tomato juice, a pack of fig rolls, 3 bananas and jelly babies. When you're about half way stop at the shop and drink a pint of milk. Cost =£3.

I just did century this past Friday. What works for me is to carb load the night before and the day of the ride I took a break around the 50 mile marker and had lunch with some friends and we continued onto the next 50. During the ride I just drank gatorade in order to keep hydrated and keep the electrolyte balance. Worth mentioning is that I kept changing positions and shaking out the discomfort. For the next one I am gonna bring some Gels and bars to eat during the ride.

Yeah this is a bit ridiculous.. I can see the benifit of this IF you were racing, but if you are just going out on a century ride with buddies all you need is water, gatorade some jells, and a few protien bars. I've done several centuries including some over mountains with the products ive mentioned.

i'll stick with an omelette and a banana in the morning followed by an expresso . then a meal at the 50 to 60 miles line . most guys looking at this are amateur riders and would not need all those chemicals. I'll be more worried about hydration . on a 100 miles ride on a 70deg F we are talking about 6 to 10 bottle depending on you fitness level

This guy is really over the top. Just did 50 miles on a little oatmeal w/ 1/2 banana an hour before ride, PBJ half way and a Milky Way mini candy bar at 35 mi and 45 mi. Drank 1 1/2 16 oz. water bottles with Nunn energy tabs along the way. I'm 70 years old.

Just quick update on progress made, thanks bart for all the tips, went with the insulated bottle, and also found a company in England that now imports some of the skratch labs products, got myself a cook book and started to use their hydration products, great stuff mate, just like to say if i hadnt of watched your videos i would have never heard of this product, really enjoying making up my own food for riding and finding the hydration products more enjoyable experience! !! Went with the apple and cinnamon. Keep up the great videos and that information , thanks

I rode my first century two months ago. I should have watched this video. I mainly got the nutrition part right. It felt good to ride one after doing too many 50 and 75 mile rides.

I don't think everything listed is quite necessary. I do like how you are in depth with what each product is used for. A little simpler version of the must haves would be : an electrolyte product for hydration, and product for endurance/cramps, and a fuel food. Great rundown overall though. Just a tad long winded.

You can carry all you need on a 100 mile ride.. easy. (wel that is if you use some bike bags or a backpack or large hip belt) Unless you're racing oh and also the water. . But if you're buying stuff in shops during the ride.. you're not really racing are you.

Is it a bad idea to ride a century on a mountain bike? Also is it necessary to have a bike shirt or shoes?
@cyclingstrong9 жыл бұрын
***** Nope it's not a bad idea! I race a 100 mile mountain bike race every year called the Leadville Trail 100. It depends on what you're doing but I would definitely recommend having at least the shoes so you can utilize your whole pedal stroke and not have to focus on keeping your feet on the pedals.

Hello, thanks for the video. What kind of natural food would you suggest instead of all this synthetic capsules? And I would be glad to know what do you think about using natural food in comparison of these respect the performace.
@cyclingstrong10 жыл бұрын
I love +Skratch Labs stuff. Look at the cook book they have out. If I could always use natural food I would do it. But it does not for me. So I use natural food on training rides a ton. But not in races.
@jruerph10 жыл бұрын
You may want to also consider supplementing these supplements with green smoothies....2-3 fruits in combination with a green leafy vegetable. I always energize my rides with 1 to start and another mid-ride. They are full of energy sustaining sucrose, micronutrients and will reduce your hydration needs.
@jmecklenborg6 жыл бұрын
This is ridiculous. I rode 127 miles on a mountain bike in 13 hours eating at McDonald's in the morning and at Wendy's halfway through. When I got back to the house I hit up Taco Bell for the fourth meal. Dinner was probably a pack of crackers from a gas station.
@simonhuss96199 жыл бұрын
On that point bart what would u recommend when its cold, i find it really hard to take in enough fluid, as wen its cold i dont feel thirsty, and struggle to take down cold fluids, even if i use a camelbak to try and keep things a little warmer,
@cyclingstrong9 жыл бұрын
I would recommend getting some kind of insulated bottle like this one: www.camelbak.com/en/Canada/Sports-Recreation/Bottles/Podium-Big-Chill-25oz.aspx I LOVE this bottle mainly because of the lid they use and it is really the only bottle that I ride with. The next thing I would do is before you get out on a ride, heat your water up super hot and put in this hydration mix: www.skratchlabs.com/products/exercise-hydration-mix It is specific for hot water and I can't say enough good about the company, their stuff is amazing. Then, when you put the hot water into the insulated bottle, it should keep it nice and warm for you. These are the two things I do when riding in super cold conditions like out in the snow on my fat bike and it works awesome for me! I hope this helps!

beef jerky, gatorade, powerbars, I made 75 mi.
@cyclingstrong8 жыл бұрын
+Joshua Martin The video is not saying you have to have this stuff to make it a far distance. I could drink no water and eat no food and still ride 100 miles. The point is to try and teach stuff you could use to perform at your best not just to make it the distance. Thanks for watching!

You give some good advice in general. But soy protein is not part of it. Soy has an incomplete amino acid profile and can also raise estrogen levels. Not something a guy needs. Stick with a good whey after work outs and casein blend before bedtime. 30 years ago soy was popular because it was cheap (still is). Since then there have been great advancements in protein powder.
@cyclingstrong10 жыл бұрын
I will look into this more. Thanks for the info. Thank you for taking time to explain to the group.
@LeoBugtai10 жыл бұрын
All though I agree with advancements in protein powder. But for soy? Soy estrogen levels is a myth. Yes so has estrogen but its not the same as animal protein estrogen. Like in milk. Soy has has phytoestrogen which does no harm to the body. It actually helps the body to prevent cancers, heart disease, osteoporosis etc. Phytoestrogen is found in other plants as well. But hey if you don't like soy go with almond, rice, hemp, coconut.... and just because its incomplete protein doesn't mean its less dense or raise estrogen levels. Soy protein is not acid. Its more alkaline which is more helpful to the body....(nutrition.org).

started off well for how to prepare, but then I got lost around 5:00 . How would the items you mention change if it takes me 10 hrs for a 10 mile mountain bike race?
@cyclingstrong10 жыл бұрын
I would use CarbSport with fruit sticks. This is a long ride. I would like to know about the ride more to help you. Do you have support on the ride.
@radrcer10 жыл бұрын
It is the Barnburner 104 in Flagstaff Az. barnburnermtb.com It is four 26 mile loops. The support is at the start/finish line. There is another aid station at the 10 mile mark, but this is more for emergency water as opposed to a place to store supplies. I don't have support team. A big problem for me is it's at 8000' elevation.

What vitamins are you taking. sounds like you need to start on some elevation training. Do you have a way to get a hypoxico tent?
@radrcer10 жыл бұрын
daily multivitamin and fish-oil pill. I saw a hyoxico tent on ebay (used) for $1700. That is not an option at that price. Are the elevation training masks I see for $80 worth it?
@cyclingstrong10 жыл бұрын
I use a tent and mask. Just do what you can do.. breath threw your nose not your mouth. try a straw in your mouth. Just so you can get the idea of what your body will do. I am not a doctor. So do what is best for you.
