➡️ How can such a simple song be so deep, nuanced, and complex all at the same time? "Nutshell" by Alice In Chains is an emotional gut-punch, and I'm really fulfilled finally seeing the MTV Unplugged version for the very first time. The lyrics from Layne Staley and the somber chord voicings from Jerry Cantrell -- glued together by the warm, lyrical bass melodies from Mike Inez -- make this song is a collage of chilling imagery and emotion from start to finish. In this video I break down exactly WHY Alice In Chains can sound so somber with just a few chords, and how they achieve so much harmonic depth. I discuss the strong usage of chord inversions between the bass and guitar parts, Mike's unique note choices across each bass fill, why the phrasing of the bass parts are so effective, the "call and response" nature of the bass fills with Layne's vocals, and much more.
