If anyone is wondering about the antlers. Reindeers drop them off every year and they grow back with skin on them but they scrape it off on trees that's why they are bloody.

TL;DR: Would you make some content about Ystävänpäivä? 😁 Like are there any related idioms that would be good to know? Is there a tradition for gift giving, or maybe other forms of showing appreciation? Is there a 'normal' way to spend Ystävänpäivä? Long version; I've been learning Finnish for a bit now (And that's how I found your channel, it's really nice, thanks for all the help! 🙂 ). It started with me browsing my friends' Finnish dictionary and trying to say the words. She had a hearty laugh at the attempts, and thus it started as a way to get cheap laughs from my friend. It turned out that it is also really fun to learn, so I'm still going with it. Cultural exchange and language is so fascinating! And Finnish has a lot of idioms, special words and ways to express through language, it's a joy. Now that 14th of February is coming up, it might be too late this year, but I think it would be an interesting video and I'd love to learn more. I only learned about the Friends' Day tradition last year, and I absolutely adore the concept. So this Ystävänpäivä my friend will get a nice note and some good, special coffee. I've exposed her to so many Danish traditions, and cultural foods, it's only fair we do something Finnish too! :D Have a good day! 😄

It's nice to see you happy and having such a nice time. Thanks for bringing us along for the ride. With the rack that they have, I'm glad the reindeer are friendly. I noticed that you talk to your friends in English. I have wondered how much of your daily routine involves speaking Finnish. I completed the Duolingo course on Finnish not that I feel like I learned a lot. I've started swedish on duo now. It seems easier. I've also wondered if you speak swedish when you're in (Finnish) areas that it is the predominant language. Thanks for a very enjoyable video, yet another time.

I've never seen a reindeer in real life. I've seen plenty of videos where they were in the wild. One video I saw was filmed at the Finnish/Russian border. There was a fence along the border. The narrator said the point of the fence was more about keeping reindeer from crossing the border than preventing people from doing so--because reindeer are valuable, and the Finns didn't want their wealth that was on the hoof to just wander away into Russia and enrich the Russians. I saw another video where some guys went to Rovaniemi to visit Santa Claus. While they were there, they took a reindeer ride. It was actually in a sleigh that was pulled by reindeer. I was surprised at how small the reindeer were that were pulling them. Those reindeer were only about the size of a large dog, and they had a lot of them tied to the sleigh in order to be able to pull the weight of two men. The reindeer at Nuuksio look bigger than the ones at Rovaniemi.

Ohh makes sense! Those reindeer in Lapland must be quite strong then if they were so small and managed to pull two grown men!

In Alaska, wild reindeer are called "caribou". With the exception of a small number of reindeer farms, the caribou are are wild and travel in large herds. Seeing a herd move is absolutely breathtaking. We also refer to the lichen you are feeding the reindeer as "reindeer moss", it grows best hanging on trees and bushes where it can get light and moisture without being trampled.
@KatChatsFinnish
@KatChatsFinnish Жыл бұрын
Wow I can imagine how amazing seeing a huge herd like that would be! That's beyond cool! And kiitos for the extra information about the reindeer moss!
@izzardclips9350
@izzardclips9350 Жыл бұрын
Well, actually the lichen Kat was feeding them is called jäkälä, and it grows on the ground. The stuff that hangs from trees is called naava in Finnish. You can tell them apart by their looks.
@sigriddahlberg5045
@sigriddahlberg5045 Жыл бұрын
@@izzardclips9350Thanks for that, we have many kinds of lichen as well, and it makes more sense that reindeer would eat the kind that grows on the ground than hanging from trees.

@@sigriddahlberg5045 Also, to be pedantic, I think in the scientific classification the caribou is reagarded a closely related, but a seperate species from the reindeer, which lives in Eurasia. The same is true for birds like magpies, crows and ravens in Eurasia and North America. They look roughly the same as their counterparts here in Europe, but are classified as closely related different species.
@sigriddahlberg5045
@sigriddahlberg5045 Жыл бұрын
@@izzardclips9350 Interesting and not really surprising. Domestic reindeer were imported to Alaska in the 1890s (from Siberia as an attempt to stave off starvation for some Arctic Native communities) and were widely used for hauling freight and for food for decades. For a variety of reasons, the practice declined starting around 1930 and had shrunk considerably by 1950. There are still some domestic reindeer farms in operation today, though. Reindeer meat is available commercially, but caribou is only available as game meat and cannot be sold.

We call that lichen 'Reindeer moss' in the UK. It's dyed various colours and is used to create the foliage for model trees and bushes etc. in the model railway and diorama community. 😁 I've seen a deer in the highlands of Scotland, but never seen a reindeer. I know a chap from Espoo that has eaten reindeer meat. 😭Have you ever eaten it?

There is a dead channel on YT called Jake and Emma, which had a lot of content about Finland--because Emma is from Finland. In one video, Jake was in Finland, and he was eating a pizza that he claimed had reindeer meat on it. Since I've never tasted reindeer meat, I dunno if I would consider that a good thing or a bad thing.
