Heck, even as early as [potential light spoiler] .... episode 4 we start to see a shift from "that's very heavy if you think about it" to the characters textually and blatantly dealing with very real, complex, and in many ways painful issues. (There's also a lot of stuff going down in ep 3 but as not everyone picks up on all of it at first and the more obvious parts could be seen as humor and/or sensationalized drama, I'm counting that one as a "heavy if you think about it" episode.)

And Strange World, which is of course more sci-fi but Disney has branched out before. It's so weird because the MERCH POTENTIAL for this show is insane, like you could get glyph stuff, palisman toys, of course a default King plushie but also other characters like a Hooty Long-Furby or a Kikimora throwing plushie, you could even do something with *temporary* sigils or coven banners for the kids who have yet to grow out of their Harry Potter House phases! Like, they could've made way more money than they did even with just POSTERS, and they just decided to write it off as a "went woke, went broke" thing. Either they've never read or watched a fantasy story or they got uncanny valley from the criticism. By any chance are your fam predisposed to say... wishing their kids would join the Emperor's Coven? If y'all were witches of course. Although I will say that the demon designs are weird enough to cross into the horror realm, in a different light. Witches being just humans with bright hair and eyes and elf ears making up most of the main characters and any actually scary demons being episodic pure evil threats kinda threw a wrench into the whole "Luz is unintentionally creepy of the smiley variety and likes fucked-up spider taxidermy" vibe I'm sure she gave off and focuses more on how wholesome she is on the inside. Which was probably a choice as well. So maybe your fam just didn't like watching Luz get bullied in a world she preferred to stay in, which is understandable. Camilla had good reason to fear for her daughter, there were soooo many legit death threats season 1. I still call bs on the "too weird" comment then. I forget what my brother saw first but I showed my little friend Gravity Falls's shapeshifter episode, and the friend said it was too kiddy because he wasn't used to the bubbly art style (also he's soooo mature and watches horror movies. And is an FNAF super-fan, which does not help his case, objectively speaking). It haunts me, especially since I forgot Wendip had suuuuch a big focus. Definitely, not the spookiest episode I could've started with in retrospect. More recently I was showing a friend in a group chat screenshots from an MCYT animatic. Me and my brother watch the actual videos but my brother is married to comedy and doesn't like angst, so he refused to watch animatics. But he just so happened to pop in after I showed the friend the shit the guy who made Screw the Nether was up to a few months ago (hint, purple lighting and a cosplay) since the buddy was surprised to know that the fucker was still active on the internet. I neglected to mention the volunteer queercoding that man has been up to since 2021, since I had already broken both their brains, and my brother didn't know about that either. Yes, they were inviting a Dan and Phil or Markiplier x Septiceye or whatever tf fiasco. Although MCYT is a layered parfait of moral questions anyways, there's a thiiing about characters verses actors, which gets kinda muddy, not the place and no one asked. Point is, it's uniquely embarassing. Esp when you could've shown them day one and you accidentally showed them episode 34 lmao

At least they were able to end it well. It deserved another season or two of filler to really build up certain payoffs, but imo, Owl House has a way better ending than most shows I've watched. I binged the whole series in about two weeks after Nux dropped his reaction

Honestly the cringe is mainly episode 1, and a few fillers. But it's definitely not the worst, and I'm living proof that even hated episodes can be enjoyed by certain people! I'm glad you stuck through, and especially that it was SUCH a good investment/genuine. Did the show mean anything to you, did you appreciate the writing, have a favourite character or multiple or either? @@ivyinkwell1754 season 2 Lilith REALLY spoke to me in a lot of ways. I'm suffering a lot of burnout after graduating college, and I also have a sibling who, like Eda, required a lot of attention from my parents. I was always the more self-sufficient one, so I often got overlooked. Also, Luz's final wish to be understood really hit me so hard. I hadn't really empathized much with her until that moment, and even though I've seen other characters portray that wish in a way that did not impact me, somehow Luz did. The show meant so much to me that I actually bought the box set so that I can rewatch it whenever I want, and show it to my kids if I ever have any. For me at least, it stands up squarely next to shows like ATLA and Adventure Time.

@@ivyinkwell1754 the writing is honestly flawless in my opinion. It's not gut-bustingly hilarious, gritty and realistic, or sickeningly saccharine and sweet. It hits a perfect balance in nearly every episode. It's just straight up good writing. I also can't overstate my amazement that they were able to give the show such a solid, comprehensive, satisfying ending on the horrid schedule they were given. I loved every character except maaaybe Tibbles, but he was a solid filler villain. Also, I loved how they often tackled topics from two angles. One of my favorites was how they showed how systemic education fails some students (the detention class) while in the same education showing how important formal education is (with Luz not really learning much from Eda) and how a structured environment is actually exactly what certain students thrive in. I've seen lots of anti-school themes in modern shows, but I can't remember any pro-school messages that also acknowledge the struggles of divergent students. This meant a lot to me because I was a kid who was very good at school, and the common themes of "school bad" often made me feel a bit isolated from the messages of the show. Sorry for the two massive posts lmao. There's so much I love about The Owl House
