@thiey439yeah, the actor definetly played Zoro as a bit too stoic. Which, mind you, would have probably been fine later down the line but its too subdued for him at this point in the story.

@@filipvadas7602fr like i get Makenyu's the most popular right now mainly cuz he's cute & all & his fight choreography skills r amazing but my lord he is by far my least fave of the Straw Hats personality wise in the Netflix ver. He acts way too much like post timeskip Zoro whereas rewatching clips of the anime East Blue saga he IS serious/badass but yet so lighthearted & goofy at the same time. Makenyu's ver is too monotone majority of the time that comes off slightly boring compared to his manga/anime counterpart

@@caratsomnia8110 Maybe they're flipping his personality you think. In the live action, they have him stoic in the begining because he's doesn't fully trust them yet so he's still distant to them, or he isn't completely comfortable enough around them to let his guard. Then maybe by season 2 he won't be as stoic to the crew. The makers of the show seem to be moving in that direction, since he does open up to the others more in the final episodes.

Zoro in the manga was way more confident than I think you guys are remembering. He was shocked like crazy when he saw him but he still discussed with Mihawk before challenging him and had plenty of chances to back out. Zoro only realizes the gap between them when Mihawk stops his Oni-Giri with the knife. Also Luffy gave his blessing in the manga too, he was stopping people from interfering cause he knew Zoro wouldn’t want that. The betrayal wasn’t challenging Mihawk it was LOSING to Mihawk.

I like this altered detail. Live action Zeff always tries to chase Sanji away from Baratie by any ways, such as forcing Sanji to do a boring job like stewing bones, forcing him to work as a waiter, not allowing him to go into the kitchen... He knows Sanji even if he wants to go out to find All Blue but lingers on many things in Baratie, and Zeff was somewhat more proactive than the anime version in motivating Sanji to realize his dream.

yeah this! and i'd also add that it was the final proof to him that following luffy as his captain was the right decision seeing as in the manga even with less talk luffy instinctively understood that this was zoro's dream fight and neither he or anyone else should interfere. he was even holding ppl and himself back from it. i always took that part as the final nail for zoro that earned his complete trust and loyalty to luffy, this man who respected and did not stand in his goal's way as he promised. i think both the og and the live action tackled these elements in their own way perfectly, which is most important.

They did explain why Sanji was waiting tables in the source material. In fact, Sanji explained it to Fullbody himself when he kicked his ass. It was Oda adding a "f*ck you, get your facts straight" moment from Sanji to Fullbody. Also, Sanji here is pretty faithful to his initial introduction in the manga/anime. He didn't go full on heart shaped eye simping until a little later. The first time I really remember him doing it was probably sometime during the Alabasta arc. Up until then, he simped the same way he does here, where he's clearly simping, but maintains his self control in an attempt to be suave. Edit: The Warlord system WAS made for World Government dirty work in the manga/anime. The idea was, the bounty for someone who became a Warlord would be cancelled, and the Warlord would be allowed to pirate all they want so long as their targets were other pirates. Basically they recruited the strongest criminals they can get to attack other criminals in order to keep their numbers down. They would also occasionally be directed to attack certain targets, or help defend military assets like when they were all summoned to Marineford. The WG never turned turn a blind eye to crimes a Warlird would commit, they would "forgive" the crimes they already committed on the condition that they don't commit anymore crimes unless they were told, but attacks on other pirates were fair game. So they didn't ignore what Crocodile was doing, he did it in secret, so they didn't know what he was up to, but once they found out, his title was revoked and he was thrown in Prison. That's why Gecko Morya was allowed to remain a Warlord after Luffy beat him, because nothing he did was a crime against normal citizens of the World Government. They did turn a blind eye to Doflamingo, but because he was a former Celestial Dragon, he had leverage to make the WG turn a blind eye to his crimes.

- Sanji is played by while Taz Skylar who was also Walt in “The Lazarus Project”, Gin in “The Deal”, Billy in “Boiling Point”, & many more. Fun fact he & Zeff’s actor actual work together before having a father son relationship so this was perfect casting - Mihawk is played by Steven John Ward (who also is Mark in “Catch Me a Killer”, Ezra in “Triggered”, Chaz in “Vagrant Queen”, & many more) while his younger self in Roger execution is played by Theo Le Ray - Zeff is played by Craig Fairbrass who also is Eddie (Villian), Arkad (Stargate SG-1), Pat (Rise of the Footsoldier), & many more - Krieg (bounty 17,000,000 Berries / Yen = $ 115,117.20) is played by Milton Schorr who also is Burrell (Black Sails), Graham (Warrior), Mercenary (Tomb Raider), & many more - Patty is played by Brashaad Mayweather who also is Bmore (Summer with the Guys), Brown (Deep Blue Sea 3), Damion (The Coroner), & many more - Gin (bounty is 12,000,000 Berries / Yen = 81,259.20) is played by Litha Bam who also is Bartok (Raised by Wolves), Ben (Warrior), & many more - Fullbody is played by Jean Henry who is also Arno (Diepe Waters) - Moody is played by Amber Hossack & she was also in Cut-Out Girls - “Cresent Moon” Gally is played by Nkulueko Phiri who also is Hlubi messenger (Shaka iLembe) which was Luffy’s first opponent in the Romance Dawn one-shot manga - Easter Eggs found in this Episode: - With the Going Merry’s railing getting broken by cannon balls reminds me that we don’t have Johnny & Yosaku ins’t here to fix it because this is the point in the Manga / anime when they appear - Garp uses his technique called Genkotsu Meteor / Meteor Fist where he throws a cannonball at an enemy ship - When entering the Baratie their outfits are from color spread: Luffy’s is from Ch.28, Usopp’s is from Volume 8 special, & Nami is wearing her outfit based on her Baratie arc & Ch.50 (minus the letters “WC”) which notice that the circles on her skirt are like a pocket - Once they enter notice the paintings on the wall references Gaimon on the Island of Rare Animals, Sabaody, a Giant King Squid, a battle at sea = maybe the Edd War, a giant wave with faces = sea monkeys from Ch.304, a Sea Beasts from Fishman Island, Foolshout Island (Koala’s birthplace), Kyuka Island, & the ceiling art is maybe the All Blue or Fishman Island - Sanji’s dish that he made is made of Elephant Bulefin Tuna which is the same dish from Sanji’s Cookbook & the fish that he buys in Lougetown that originates from the South Blue, & if you look on the kitchen wall references species from the One Piece world like a wild boar, dinosaur, the panda shark, armored stone fish, tomahawk spiny lobster & dragon salmon (Shokugeki No Sanji) - Sanji mentions Ithurzburger Stein a drink from Micqueot in the North Blue that Fullbody mentions when he ask for the wine from Sanji in the manga / anime, but then with the Straw Hats he mentions Umeshu a wine that Kureha drinks - Luffy ordering milk is a reference to Ch.1 when after Shanks gave him milk he was mock for being a kid - Koby just like Nami in Ep.1 mentions 77th Branch which is lead by Pudding Pudding - Notice that on the cannon ball Krieg shoots at Mihawk has his Jolly Roger, & after his defeat you can see another named member behind him named Pearl “the Invincible Shield” - The large drink that Usopp had notice it had Sea Kings painted on it - During the Ending Credits you can see that they have added the Baratie located in the Sambas Region

I actually disagree. I think he already knew. To be honest it is not even up for interpretation. He only wanted confirmation from Coby. + The more important thing was that he wanted to test Coby. I think he knew it was Luffy all along. To me that was pretty obvious too. In the Scene we see with Garp prior he says: "A map to the grand line was stolen... By a pirate in a STRAW HAT". Luffy had the straw hat back while hanging around Garp. Garp knows Extremely well that Shanks no longer has the hat, and that it was given to Luffy. Anyone that knows the source material should know this. Even if we ignore the source material, there is a scene in the live action where garp destroys Luffy's raft as a child while Luffy is wearing the straw hat. He obviously knew the pirate in the straw hat was Luffy. There is no way Garp is so dumb he did not already know it was Luffy. @@kiddragoon15

As someone who worked in a professional kitchen for a decade, the dynamic between Zeff and Sanji has made me cry several times, the actors really nailed their roles. Obviously it's exaggerated to an extreme, but there really is a kind of antagonistic cameraderie that comes from working a busy kitchen as a team, and I've personally known a couple of older cooks and chefs who basically treated everyone like Zeff does, with the whole "nothing is ever right, you can do better" attitude, and it really does come hand-in-hand with a kind of protective mentor role a lot of the time. I've even pulled people off the line myself to throw into other sections when we needed the extra hands, and had a similar petulant argument around the whole "I'm a cook, why are you asking me to clear tables?" "Because we need to clear tables more than I need you to help me cook now go do as you're told" as in the show.

They did Sanji SO damn good in the live-action. I love so much how this version version keeps him the suave, flirty, sophisticated, boyish gentleman I fell hard for when I first read the manga and ditches the pervy, nose-bleeding creeper he unfortunately became more and more as the series went on. The live-action Sanji just reminds me why I liked this character so much in the first place, and I think he may just be my current (at least till Robin shows up next season) favorite LA Straw Hat, and that's saying a lot when I struggle to even pick a favorite since they're all so likable.

The manga did explain why Sanji was waiting tables, it was Sanji himself that told Fullbody that all the waiters ran out on them "the other day" for being scared of all the fighting that happens there. Honestly, I think my biggest issue with the live action is how they seem to feel the need to tie everything together. It was, as you said, how Mihawk just came there due to being bored, and things to similar effect that makes the one piece world feels big and that the world is progressing even without the straw hats. But the live action feels like everything has to do with the straw hats and the world stands pretty much still unless they're there affecting it.

A story that ties together its narrative in tv shows, books etc is what makes a series good though. That’s what keeps the audience focused on the storyline that is happening and not have them lose interest. 12+ years ago was the first and only time I read this ‘East Blue’ saga in the manga and ngl I couldn’t remember most of it. So after watching the L.A, I went and brought the first few volumes of the manga. After finishing the ‘East Blue’ saga in the manga, I gotta say it’s pretty weak in comparison to other saga’s of One Piece due to the fact that a lot of the stories/arcs within the East blue were all over the place. It may be just the prologue to the story of One Piece but it’s supposed to have an impact good enough to grab it’s reader’s attention and keep them hooked enough to want to continue. Personally I got this feeling more from the L.A then the manga, had to push myself to continue to read through it but luckily reading is a lot faster then watching episodes. This is probably the reason why I never revisited this first saga until recently in the manga. The L.A actually did a solid job at building the relationship between the straw hat crew faster then in the manga. They did it in a way were the adventure the straw hat members are about to embark on hit more, their motivation and goals just feels more real in a way. Sure it’s definitely not perfect by all means but the arcs flow much better then they do in the manga in my opinion. Also I really enjoy the Garp and Koby addition in the L.A, the one thing I couldn’t stand when reading and watching the manga and anime was how little screen time they had. The reason why I never cared much about them but after watching these characters in the L.A, I want more. I want to see more of the training Garp puts them through, I want to see more Garp in general

Nux is really out there misremembering how the zoro and mihawk fight went(and with metahulk enabling him). Zoro's apology wasnt because he was rash, but because Luffy told him it would be embarrassing for the king of the pirates to have a swordsmen who wasnt the strongest in the world. He thought he failed luffy, and hindered his captains dream, and Kuina's dream.

Nux has selective memory disorder about East Blue. Zoro swore to never lose a battle again and was shocked in the difference in strength against Mihawk. He knew he was strong, but really saw it as an opportunity to beat him. Also we literally saw Nami push off Zoros buddies and take the Merry.

Hot take: I like how Mihawk gets introduced to the story here better than the manga/anime... BECAUSE: 1.- Yes, it's an overkill, but at the same time, if Garp sends anyone weak enough, Luffy might get away or the person they send might struggle and end up killing Luffy out of desperation. Garp wants Luffy alive, so sending someone overpowered enough to not struggle makes sense. Plus, Mihawk is the only warlord Garp can actually trust to not kill Luffy, apart from Jinbe, everyone else is a jerk. 2.- In the manga I feel irs even more stupid that freaking Dracule Mihawk, one of the warlords lf the sea, who's as powerful as an Emperor, chases poor lil Don Krieg -one of the most pathetic pirates in all the series apart from Kuro- all the way from the grand line to the East Blue, just to poke at them. Like, really Mihawk? You have nothing better to do? I thought you were someone important.

One gripe I had with this fight scene was the lack of shock and disbelief in Zoro when he realizes Mihawk strength. One thing I liked about the fight scene was Zoro's shock over the gap in power between him and the greatest swordsman. He gets a reality check on how far he really is from his goal. Here he's just super casual and calm throughout and rarely smiles. Zoro isn't just stoic and serious all the time. He can show an outburst of emotion too. But still It was a great fight scene. And man did they do such a great job portraying Mihawk in live action.

The point of the Zoro fight wasn't just for him to spontaneously challenge Mihawk and betray Luffy (that was just bad pacing), It was so he understood the absolute difference in strength between himself and Mihawk because of how cocky he was. It's supposed to be a humbling moment where he realizes how overconfident he's been and what it actually takes to be the world's greatest swordsman in order to keep his promise.
@blackroomred

the scars on the back is a swordsman's greatest shame line might be the more memorable one but in the og there was a moment before that where mihawk asked him why he didn't retreat, so that's what the "my dream would be lost" moment signified. in the og it went like: "if I were to take even one step back, I believe that all those important oaths, promises and many other deals 'til now, will all go to waste and I'll never be able to return before you, ever again." i actually like that kept this part in too, wish they went with the og quote actually bc imo that was one of the moments where he earned mihawk's respect.

I think that's why the Fullbody scene isn't here, it fits the original's personality, but idk if the live-action Sanji would do that.

[MANGA SPOILER AHEAD] I think the added context of the shichibukai in the Live Action is meant to expand the nuance of the system, because remember that Alabasta and Dressrosa were direct victims of Shichibukai, fought to abolish the shichibukai and succeeded. While being shichibukai they are still active pirates as well who still commit crime, but this time with more leeway and even some protection from government. Two things though: 1. They are not in some secret deal with govt. They are public knowledge and the fact they are so well known and feared by other pirates is part of the reason of founding the system. 2 Garp hates Shichibukai and along with previously 2 mentioned kings, were pushing for abolishing the system. Thus, Garp calling Mihawk to capture Luffy felt out of place with his character.

The government does actually turn a blind eye to the warlords criminal actions, we were told about this by yosaku before arlong park arc, the only line they can’t cross is those crimes actually hurting the government like for example taking over a kingdom under their protection. They are even allowed to target marines as shown by Moria who stole several marine shadows for his army and Hancock turning marines to stone. So there are lots of things the warlords can get away with so long as it doesn’t hurt the government
