Rebuild of an NV3500 5-Speed Manual Transmission from a 99 Chevy S-10 Blazer. I bought this Blazer for $450 with the transmiison locked up, I found it had a broken 1-2 Shift Fork, I put about $100 into this rebuild, I got parts from Midwest Transmission Center, they were really friendly and they have techs that you can talk to if you're not sure what parts you need.
This was my first attempt at a KZfaq Video so bear with me, I know I missed some important parts and didnt start filming until the re-assembly process. Mainly I did this to help anyone else who may be diving into one of these on thier own, I search before tackled this one and didn't find much useful information, i hope this helps!
I built an Assembly Fixture to get this thing back together, it is really necessary to do this because the reverse idler needs to be in position as the rear case half goes on, it can not be put in after the rest of the guts, also imagine trying to hold 50lbs worth of gears that can rotate freely and slide them into the case while its on its side. I will try to get measurements put up so you can build your own, it's nothing fancy...
There were a couple things I missed showing in the video: Counter Shaft (Cluster Gear) Bearings, these are a large needle roller bearing in a plastic cage, when you put the case halves on you need to pack the bearing with some type of thick assembly lube (Vaseline) and make the rollers stick to the shaft, if you dont do this you will have a hard time getting the bearing to seat in its race thats pressed into the case because the rollers will relax outward and cause interference. I did not replace any syncronizers, this would require rebuilding the mainshaft and you would need some type of press to get each part off of the shaft, that may be best left to a transmission shop but you could probably carry the shaft in with the parts you want to change (Syncros) and pay the labor.
I'm going to have this thing back out to do a clutch at some point and I will probably replace syncros at that time if I do, so if you want to see that please subscribe so that you see the new video...whenever that may be.
Thanks For Watching!

Everyone should learn to rebuild their NV3500. Easy peasy! Once you pull the bell housing off, drill hole in jig the size of main shaft, slip onto hole and mark the second shaft and drill hole, then mark where the allthread rod goes to hold up the reverse idler. The jig is easy to make. Definitely get a log handled ring puller. Gonna need it. (also a shaft puller, to pull cog wheel) I managed to make one from two peices of angle iron bolted together like scissors. The KEY TIP in assembling the gears back into the housing is NOT USE GREASE TO HOLD BEARINGS in place (didn't work), but instead use small rubber bands to hold bearings in and when the bearing slips into the retaining cups the rubber bands slip off onto the shaft and out of the way. I discovered the rubber bands on the shaft when I took mine apart and when reassembling was when I finally realized why they were there. That first shifter boot you see when removing the bell housing was broke, but the crazy part is that the last trans shop repairing the trans just epoxied the broken part back together, rather than replacing the part for a hundred bucks. It didn't take long for it to break apart, again. I had bought the rebuild kit, but didn't really need it because the old parts/ synchro rings were still in good shape. I rebuilt and replaced all of them, anyway. Now I am very pleased in knowing how to rebuild (where you cannot find anyone to rebuild it for you, because MANUAL trans) and will do it again, knowing that it will be done right (no gluing) and can save myself a bundle of money. I drive a 2001 Dodge Ram 1500 4x4 and have hauled some heavy loads long distances. The motor is in great shape with a lot of miles, but that trans has been pulled three times, now.

this was very helpful. You'll find you can go to synchros worn to hell and bring it back with a core shifter making hurst products. the oem plastic base leads to errors one assumes is mechanicals wearing down.. all the while it is the lack of a real shifter. My own is at 359k miles in a truck that was so overloaded it broke frame pieces. Now with Hurst shifter base and stick. These ARE NOT weak transmissions.

Great video!!!! Really helped me a bunch. I didn't build the fixture, but took a similar approach after seeing this. I put a 1x4 with two holes in it across a bucket. The center to center distance of the holes was right at the 3 3/8" that is marked in sharpie on the fixture in the video. I think the two holes I drilled were 1 1/4" and 1 7/16". I didn't use the reverse idler holder as shown here, but simply held it in place from the bottom while my wife helped lower the rear case onto the setup. Had to jiggle it a bit to get the bearings to fall into place, but overall worked well. Just another suggestion for those attempting this. I do have one question.....does anyone have the torque specs for the all of the bolts? I've searched around and can't seem to find them any where. Thanks for any help!

I'm sure those to follow (myself included) would appreciate dimensions (and instructions) on the jig you made. Also, could you list any tools that you needed to complete this other than sockets and wrenches? You mention Armstrong 67-555, are those the only pliers needed for all the retaining rings? What tricks were not shown in taking the front case half off? (like the clutch slaved cylinder) I'm about to rebuild mine. Thank you

Seems like you know quite a bit. so I hope you can answer a question. Have a NV3500 I got for my hot rod and it is making a sound as you release the clutch like there are rocks loose spinning in the bell housing/gear box(hard to decipher). Just hoping with all of your work and speak with techs, you may know of what could make that sound. Only happens as I am releasing clutch, not when pedal's up idling or is fully released and in gear. In other words, only makes noise (like rocks tossing about) when the clutch is early to mid throw, once gear is selected, no noise.

Sorry i never posted the dimensions of the fixture, it was pretty simple to make, probably easier to just take the basic idea from my video and make some holes in a board til you get it to mount up decent, otherwise it would probably require making a blueprint and its just not that complicated. I really should have done syncros when i was inside mine and im paying for it now, i was beating on it pretty hard and power shifted from 1 to 2 (shifted at 4500 rpm without letting off the gas) and she didnt go into 2nd and im pretty sure i bent something because 1 and 2 arent so smooth anymore. My advice, do syncros if you go inside. The transmission has taken a real beating for about 15k miles but i pound on it every day....

Hey this is probably a long shot since this video was made a long time ago I am curious did you have to put your tail shaft bearing in from the inside of the case while torn apart. Or can you change it from the outside or slash and truck with transfer case removed. if you find this comment your information is greatly appreciated thank you
@autorepairtricksnmore391
@autorepairtricksnmore391 3 жыл бұрын
The tailshaft bearing is installed from inside the case, the transmission will need to be completely taken apart. My bearings were fine at 200,000 miles, are you sure you even need to replace it? On a 4x4, the tail shaft is supported by the transfer case in operation, so it doesn't take much lateral load. I have seen input shaft bearings destroyed by worn pilot bushing in the crank, but never a tailshaft bearing on a 4x4 model.

@autorepairtricksnmore391
@autorepairtricksnmore391 3 жыл бұрын
No, you have to remove the front case half/bellhousing, that bearing needs to be knocked out from the inside. However, you dont need to make the fixture and tear it completely down, you can set the rear of the transmission in a bucket or something so the bellhousing is facing up and just pull it straight up and off. Just make sure you remove the detent plug and spring and that bolt on top of the bellhousing.

Dear friend. Please, I need some help: I bought my Sonoma RWD and it already had transmission troubles. It was rebuilt wrongly. 1. There is no lock for the reverse gear while the car is running. At any speed, if I will not be carefull, the shifter shaves the reverse gear. 2. The shifter isn't steady; beyond that, it doesn't centralize in the middle. With that, the gearing gets somewhat inaccurate. Could you explain to me what is wrong? I've never dismantled this kind of transmission. If it were correctly assembled I would know how to reassemble it, but how was incorrectly assembled, is difficult to do that Thanks
@autorepairtricksnmore391
@autorepairtricksnmore391 7 жыл бұрын
It is hard to say what is wrong with your transmission, probably something on the shifter rod, there is a plug near the top left side of the transmission up front near the bellhousing, behind the plug there is supposed to be a spring and a bullet shaped piece that act as the shifters front to rear detent. Its been so long I cant remember what controls the side to side movement, i guess i will have to watch my own video and see if i showed it. As far as your reverse lockout, this transmission doesnt have one and reverse is also not syncronized, so you can bump reverse and you will hear and feel the grind but you need to remember, it isnt actually the gear teeth that are grinding, it is just the dog teeth on the slider ring and they are designed in a way that it doesnt really cause much damage if you bump it a few times, but obviously it wouldnt be good to put any pressure on it.
@autorepairtricksnmore391
@autorepairtricksnmore391 7 жыл бұрын
I talked about that detent plug and spring starting at 11:45, i think is what controls the shifter centering front back left and right, if someone took it apart before they probably dropped the pieces and didnt know what they were for and left them out, you could try midwest transmission center in minnesota and see if they have the parts, they are a larger rebuilder and sell used parts, really easy to deal with and they let me talk to a rebuild tech on the phone to figure out which parts i needed,tell them you need the shift rail detent spring and bullet shaped part and cap/plug that goes in the bellhousing, you may not need the cap/plug if yours is still there. Hopefully they can help you out, its midwesttrans.com

@autorepairtricksnmore391
@autorepairtricksnmore391 5 жыл бұрын
Im not sure that dextron or any atf would be right for it. I remember reading that the specified syncromesh fluid is very close to 5W30 motor oil. Its not so much about how well any type of fluid can lubricate, its more about how it will effect the perfomance of the synchronizers and if it will shift well without grinding. I would try 5w30, if it shifts ok then you should be fine. Alot of people like to argue about lubricant types, in my book, if its slippery and viscosity is similar, it will usually work fine.

Full teardown. Rear case half has to come off. I didnt film the teardown, but its basically just this video in reverse order. It pretty much has to be done this way, (front comes off the back, attach fixture to hold the reverse idler, flip over, then remove rear case half) if you remove the rear case half first, you wont be able to get the reverse idler gear back in position when putting it back together.

@autorepairtricksnmore391
@autorepairtricksnmore391 5 жыл бұрын
Sounds like a fun ride! Rear vibration sounds pretty typical of a bad U-joint or a bad pinion bearing in the differential. Does it matter which gear you're in? A difference between 4th and 5th may indicate something with the trans. But in all the years ive been fixing trucks, rear vibrations like that are usually a binding or sloppy U-Joint or a pinion bearing in the diff. Grab the rear yoke with trans in neutral and jerk it around, if it wiggles at all up-down-left-right, you have a problem in the diff, if not pull the driveshaft and make sure both u-joints move freely in all directions. Only other random thing i can think of right now is, was the V8 from a manual? Does it have a pilot bushing/bearing in the back of the crank?

2 things, the reverse idler needs to be unbolted and removed if its not already, that will hold it up for sure. Other than that, maybe try tapping on the output shaft is about the only other thing i can think, may just be a tight fit in the bearing, or a burr on the snapring groove? The fixture will just make assembly much more simple, the main purpose is that it holds the reverse idler in position as you set the rear case half onto the gear set. Otherwise you would have to fish that reverse idler up in there or hold it somehow.

@@BigMoneyWaste I'm pretty sure this one was the NP233, it was in a 99 Chevy S10 Blazer. There are a few variations of the NV3500 Transmission though, they were used in some full-size Chevy and Dodge trucks too. It may depend what vehicle your Transmission came out of. I dont know all the fine details about differences between years and models. I do remember that are a handful of differences with shifter location and the shift linkage configuration inside the Transmission. Dude I’m rebuilding the exact same transmission and I’m having such a bad time trying to get the bell housing to go back on flush with the other case, how did you managed to get it to go back on?
@autorepairtricksnmore391
@autorepairtricksnmore391 3 ай бұрын
Oof, it's been a long time, but I think the one thing I remember doing was greasing the front needle bearing on the countershaft, so that the needles would stick to the shaft, if they're loose and lean outward, they won't go into the race in the bellhousing side of the case. It was that, guiding the case half on slowly and gently wiggling it until it dropped the rest of the way on.

@@autorepairtricksnmore391 thanks for your response!! I believe I’m getting closer and closer each time I take it apart lol, I’m thinking the countershaft bearing race in the back of my case wasn’t seated all the way, I’m still struggling with like 1/8 of an inch still things bind up when tightening the case up. Hopefully I will get it soon

I realize this is a long shot, but do you recall which direction the bearing goes between the input shaft and the main shaft? One direction, the plastic collar rests on the shoulder of the main shaft, and the other direction allows the metal rollers to rest on the main shaft shoulder. I've searched far and wide, but I can't seem to find an answer. Thanks!

Brett Schuetz I put my trans back together, and it's smooth as butter. The plastic (?) race goes against the shoulder of the shaft. The bearings should not contact the shoulder. I think you would notice this as excessive end play on the input shaft if you put it the wrong way.

Thanks LaTechGTO. I found this exploded view a few days ago, and want to make sure I am understanding you correctly. The image isn't perfectly clear when it is zoomed in on but looking at it, it sounds like you installed yours opposite of this image? The shoulder on the bearing cage is to the front if I am understanding what you are calling the shoulder of the race/cage....but I tend to agree with your thinking. When I installed it as shown there seemed to be a bit of grind, either with the bearings rubbing on the shoulder, or the nose of the shaft bottoming out in the input shaft. www.manualtransmissionpart.com/mm5/graphics/pdf/nv3500-1rail-2012.pdfOne other question. Did you have torque specs or just go with your gut?

Look up Midwest Transmissions, they're a transmission rebuilder located in Minnesota. They had everything i needed. Even if it's an obsolete part, they have junk cores that they sell parts from. They also have techs that you can talk to if you're not 100% sure what you need. I believe the shift fork I put in this one was used, never had any problems with it and prices were good.

Its possible that the syncro is worn, i put mine back together without replacing them and it shifts fine and you can grab 2nd real fast below 4 grand, but if you dont firmly jam it in it will grind and you mis 2nd gear, i drive it real hard all the time and when the clutch goes i plan to tear it back down and replace the syncros. On the same note, if you drive normally it shifts just fine and it has 197,000 miles on it now. I assume the fork is just the weak link when someone is shifting hard and fast and doesnt quite get the clutch in all the way but pulls the shiter through its full travel....snap!!

Are the transmission in NV3500 failure prone ?
@autorepairtricksnmore391
@autorepairtricksnmore391 5 жыл бұрын
Need clarification on your question. Until a few years ago, the only thing known as NV3500 was the model number of this specific transmission, then the geniuses at Nissan decided to name a vehicle the "NV3500", so now there's confusion when someone says "NV3500 Transmission". This is NOT a transmission FOR a Nissan NV3500 Van. This is a 5 speed manual transmission was used in various GM and Dodge vehicles such as S10 Pickups and Blazers and some half ton full size trucks, it was produced by a company called New Venture Gear. If you were in fact asking about this transmission, my opinion on common failure is no, most manual transmissions can go 200k miles with no service at all except replacing the clutch, which is considered a wear item like brake pads, so that depends greatly on a persons driving style and if they like to beat on it and bang gears real hard, ride the clutch, mostly highway vs. mostly in town stop and go traffic. The few that i have opened are usually mechanical damage from abuse, like trying to slam the shifter into 2nd at high rpm with the clutch not fully depressed, the syncronizer will not allow the teeth to mesh so the shift fork binds between the syncro and the 300 pound gorilla on the end of the shifter and breaks. On that note, these are considered a "Light Duty" transmission.

The short answer is no. It would have the dodge engine bolt pattern on the bellhousing and would also possibly have a different shifter location. That said, i do believe that alot of internal parts are interchangeable.

How much torque & hp can a nv3550 handle?
@autorepairtricksnmore391
@autorepairtricksnmore391 5 жыл бұрын
From what i know, i would say not a lot, they did run these in chevy and dodge fullsize trucks but mostly light duty, like nothing bigger than a stock 5.0 litre standard cab truck. I would say 300 ftlbs torque is probably the limit, pretty sure thats factory rating, but thats normal use. Under abusive use, like dumping the clutch with an engine making 300ftlbs and revved to 3000 rpm with a heavy vehicle or sticky tires that dont break loose, would probably grenade it. Its mainly because the case will split, when you put power to it in any gear but 4th, the gears on the main shaft are trying to push away from the countershaft, and the case just wasnt built for massive power, the factory makes everything to be lightweight unless its specifically a heavy duty application. That said, people have pushed them pretty hard, up near 450-500, but you have to be nice to it!

@UCKA4vjTgsjXQ2auWwDBG_zA about 8:20 im putting the brace for the reverse idler in, if you pulled that bolt, the half moon shaped brace could have rotated and mis-aligned the holes. Not sure how to fix this, but could try stucking a pick with a sharp point through the hole and try to rotate it upward to align the holes.
