Wait, why is the MIT license not a FOSS license? It's actually very permissive in terms of what you can do with the code. Basically, the only requirement is that you give credit. You don't even need to use the same license for derivatives. Edit: The timecode is 8:08

Turns out they moved a lot of stuff into the firmware, which is not open source, and just use the open source module to call it all from the kernel. Basically, all this move means is that Nouveau is gonna gain access to things like temps and clock speed settings and the official code will still be technically proprietary. I'll be sticking with AMD.

AMD also loads proprietary firmware blobs on chip though. I agree with the sentiment that it's side stepping the issue, and that most is still proprietary, but don't act like AMD is meaningfully distinct from NVIDA with these recent changes. This isn't nice because it removes significant blobs, it's nice because it removes significant blobs *from the kernel*. There are zero consumer GPUs that you can use without proprietary blobs.

Important things to mention: A) this will take years to fully open source and have a solid community surrounding it B) this is only the kernel side of the drivers, in other words just barely enough to publish something, but it won't run anything by itself C) the Mesa people who make the generic 2D/3D drivers based on OpenGL and Vulkan and integrate both Intel and AMD may eventually take that open source code opening from Nvidia and actually modernise Nouveau to something just as good. Now the kicker about that, is that Mesa, especially Vulkan Mesa, regularly kicks the ass of the AMD standard driver. How, why? No clue, the rumor through the grapevine is that the AMD drivers are meant to impress on benchmarks but actually perform rather weakly for games. No idea if it'll be the same for Nvidia's case, but if it is, in a few years, you will actually be able to say: "If you want real FPS, come to Linux".

which amd driver? i thought there were 2: an open-source one n a proprietary one. if by "mesa" u mean the open-source amd driver, then that sounds about right, but i would be very surprised if mesa's software fallbacks actually outperform any of them.
@eideticex
@eideticex 2 жыл бұрын
Whether or not the Mesa driver is best for your particular AMD graphics card actually comes down to what card you own. There's no official lists of which ones work best with which driver but search your card with the tag Linux and your bound to find forum posts on the various Linux websites discussing which one is better. For example on my older R7 series, the AMD driver kicks the ever-living crap out of Mesa but my brother's much newer card (not sure which series exactly) the Mesa drivers win without contest. Worst case, try one, if your not satisfied, try the other and then judge which is better for your system.

If by annoyed you mean that they couldn't use nvidia drivers with their build of linux then you are right. I'm thinking that maybe Nvidia has seen the Steamdeck take off, and realized that Linux might have some market share as a desktop OS in the future. So their getting the ball rolling on open-sourcing their drivers, so that they'll be ready by the time Linux does achieve some appreciable percentage of the market. I seriously doubt they're complying to the hacker's demands, but it might have put the thought on Nvidia's mind. Just like market share, there's also a term in advertising called mind share.

@semi horny german scientist the problem with games is the game house supporting the platform. you can hack all the way you want, but in the end of the day, linux gaming is a % of a %. but the A1000 platform for GPU computing, that's the shit ! I'm literally working on some deep-speech-2 and now I can move from Windows to Linux with my cluster of 15x GeForce970. I was using Windows because the CUDA driver was just better. I only care about open source because now I have some more code to edit and change if I need for performance. When I'm gaming, I will fucking use Windows, I'm literally resting, don't want to deal with that "crap" that's literally my job. I just want to pay and play games without thinking much. Who cares if I get 20fps less with windows in this case, I just buy a better GPU. But when it comes to my work, where I spent money on 15x older GeForce970 (because they are cheap), then performance starts mattering. Which is the entire purpose of this. Like imagine running a workflow in 2000 A1000 GPUs, every drop of performance matters, when every time you fire the workload, you burn $300 in computing for just 1 hour of cluster computing. Pfff, gaming... gamers can pay for more FPS on Windows, they never cared, and never will...

This will take probably several years before it will be relevant to gaming on linux desktop for regular users (like 2025+). If you want to be gaming on linux like this year, just buy AMD GPU. And there will be probably still some frustration even with AMD HW, as games are still by large targetting windows, so if you expect same experience as with tuned windows machine, you will regret it. Then again, how much frustration is worth more freedom and (SW) future security? IMO a lot of frustration is still worth it.

@agapp11able but with the new open source kernel driver? I guess not? I guess you have valid combination of nvidia closed driver and kernel? When it works as intended, it's quite good, but generally the AMD/Intel user experience is often smoother, especially with many distros working out of box while not containing nvidia closed drivers, etc... it's not like you can't have working nvidia at all, but you have to know what you are doing and even do some compromise about kernel updates, etc. With the new open source kernel driver this may become a bit less hassle over years, but right now this is very "alpha" and relevant mostly to developers and data centres running calculations on GPUs.

I'm going to take Microsoft on their word, when Windows 10 is EOL in 2025 they will switch everyone over to their Linux based thing that runs on ARM to compete with M2 or M3 from Apple at that point. NT is just not optimised for ARM and there would be serious compatibility issues converting x86/64 --> ARM on dinosaur Windows software (2000's era stuff that used low level API stuff, industrial software, etc). What you said is very true for the consumer side of the gpu space, but seeing them develop and continue to support and advance rapids, a library for accelerating python with cuda on every single version of their GPUs beyond pascal, and working with microsoft to develop drivers that work out-of-the-box with wsl2 is fantastic. Because AMD doesn't really have a serious enterprise/HPC division, Nvidia has been the only choice for a long time on the small-scale enterprise side of the market if you didn't want to spend the equivalent of the entire GDP of Somalia on an IBM Linux box; even if you did want to, you lose native x86 compatibility. Seeing them start to encourage open-source development, even if limited to some of their modules now, is really promising. I really hope that they keep going down this path, because it's most definitely means that we're going to have better, more compatible products in the end.

Personally I would like them to open source everything except CUDA. I can live with installing userland CUDA separately from the rest of the driver if they want to keep that secret sauce to themselves. I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you’re referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I’ve recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX. Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called “Linux”, and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project. There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine’s resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called “Linux” distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.
