The G1 does not natively support booting into NVME drives but with a BIOS modification we can help it along.

Steps to modify the BIOS www.tachytelic.net/2023/03/hp...
I looked at posts regarding the BIOS mod and it looks like the best you can get is 1.6BGps for the NVME - so my speed in the video matches that - it wasn't the drive itself limiting the speed.

Great tutorial! I had the same kind of EliteDesk 800 Gen1 mini for a few months, hooked an external GPU into the M.2 slot with a special M.2 to PCIe x16 adapter. Before buying/installing it, while searching for information if it might work or not I bumped into many threads & pages related to this NVMe boot on the Gen1 mini so this video is a great answer for them. A little downside on the Gen1, the PCIe on the Gen1 mini is running on version 2.0. Gen2 has version 3.0, double the speed of the PCIe of the Gen1. Gen1 M.2 also has a silly engineering flaw, placing the 2280 size M.2 connector so that the drive will physically block/limit pretty much airflow of the blower-type of a CPU cooler. This was also changed into Gen2 and later versions. Dumped the Gen1 to my parents, currently have a Gen3 Prodesk with i7-7700T and a GTX 1070 GPU connected to the M.2 😀

Thx for the compliment! I discovered as you mentioned that NVME in the G1 is like half the speed but at least faster than SATA.

You can go into the bios "Thermal Setting" and crank up the fan two or three notches and it's still quiet. I can playback 4K video on mine and everything only gets warm (42c). If you run Performance Test, it will get a lot warmer, but the fan speed seems to follow the rising temps.

Nice! So now for real understanding: You leave the blue jumper in place and add the black one - so two jumpers are installed during the process?
@handmedowntech
@handmedowntech 6 ай бұрын
Any jumpers that are already there (like the blue one) can stay as-is - add the black one but remember to remove it after you've successfully flashed the modifed BIOS
@handmedowntech
@handmedowntech 6 ай бұрын
And as I found out the hard way - get all of your software installed first, then shutdown, unplug, set the jumper, then go back in and do the final steps to flash the BIOS. I set the jumper too early and the software wouldn't install.

anyhow i did not get this working. I have rechecked the BIos NVME Driver if it is injected correctly, also i have set the Bios to UEFI only. I cant see my Toshiba NVME Drive in the BIOS. Somehow I would have thought to install an Intel network card and use the device as a PFSense firewall

You don't need mod the BIOS. To boot the G1 DM via an m.2 drive, you need to use an SSD that has an AHCI ROM like a Samsung SM951 MZHPV. This drive is detected as a SATA drive by the BIOS. There is another SM951 variant, MZVPV--this is an NVMe drive--is not detected by the G1.
@handmedowntech
@handmedowntech 8 ай бұрын
An alternative for those uneasy about doing the mod. Although a search on Amazon shows a 512gb going for $200, unless I'm seeing the wrong one. But then I checked eBay and see 256gb used for around $35. Does that sound right?

I didn't see any of those over 256 GB. 500 or 1 TB would have been better, but I am going to try both versions of the mod and see which I like best. One could also get an M.2 NVME to SATA adapter for the main 2.5 bay. Amazon has a number of choices on those.

I think the best way to utilize a Gen 1 mini is to install the OS on a 2.5" drive and then use a standard NVME M.2 in that slot as data storage. This way, Windows does see a standard NVME M.2 drive in Drive Manager. I bought one of the special "M.2-2280" drives and it also works just fine to boot with the OS by itself, But as of yet I have been unable to get the 2.5" slot to also work as a data drive. It starts to boot, then goes into Windows Recovery with a blank 2.5 drive plugged in. I'm going to try the Bios mod next and see it will work ok, allowing a 2.5 drive to also work for data storage. The other issue the special "M.2 2280"drives seem to cause is it makes the bios inaccessible. The computer boots so quickly with an i5-4590t that there is no time for the Bios access to fully start. I mean, you are looking at a 3 second time until the windows log in screen is available. I have seen a flash of the bios go by, but that's it. I also do not have the quick boot box checked in the bios. There is also no active HDD LED using the special 2280 drive. I installed a software based HDD light and that works fine, and appears on the tool bar. Lastly, 500GB 2280 drives are scarce, they supposedly made 1TB drives too. So far I have only seen half a million 256 gb drives, and only two 500 GB, and no 1TB drives on Epay.

I didn't find anything on doing the mod on the 705 but I'll keep my eyes open. I found that drive they talk about for like $200 on amazon - very expensive but also saw some cheap ones on eBay - but again _ I can't recommend something I haven't tried - please let me know if you end up using one of these. @@punishrsfor hp 705 g3 desktop mini, you just simply need an nvme 2280 drive and it'll detected automatically. if it's not detected, try to 'disable legacy & safe boot' in bios, if it's still no avail, try to update your bios & ssd firmware with the latest one. i can confirmed nvme drive works on 705 g3, me personally use the nvme gen3 on my 705 g3 & boot win10 from it

Just set ur bios to boot to usb, then cloverboot screen comes up, it shows available uefi boot paths on the system, you select the windows 10 install on the correct drive, then it asks if you want to default to this selection every time cloverboot starts and if you do that it boots to it everytime no problem.
