that pass at 1:36 exemplifies Simms talent. Look at how it drops it in there over Bavaro's outside shoulder among 3 defenders! Just fantastic! He threw for over 500 yards with NO LONG PASSES, and not much for yards after the catch. Phil simply diced up the defense with incredibly accurate passing. And while the big ball is more exciting, as an ex-QB (not very good) I can tell you that a spot-on 15-20 yard bullet on a crossing pattern is MUCH harder than hitting a guy on a 50 yard flag or streak. Just imagine having to anticipate not only where the receiver will be as he hauls ass across the middle, but also anticipating where the corners, LBs and safety will be. Not where they ARE...but where they will - or more importantly, WON'T - be when the ball gets to that point in space. It's absolutely amazing it works out as often as it does. The great ones make something extremely difficult look SO easy.

One thing Simms did throughout his career that this film illustrates is how well he distributed his passes. Bavaro was the main guy throughout this game but I heard Morris, McConkey, Carthon, Manuel and Bobby Johnson called out as well.

Thanks for another vintage vid! I think Simms belongs in the HOF. No gaudy numbers, he was consummate passer, his Super Bowl MVP performance remains unmatched for accuracy. He was also a monster competitor, but he never had half the play-making receivers Eli’s had. When he did, it was Simms to Bavaro! Did they hook up on some of the most memorable plays ever!

LT, Strahan, Armstead, Tiki, Eli, Toomer, Simms, and Rodney Hampton. Those my all time fave Gmen of my fandom yrs(90-present). Got a feeling Barkley gonna join that list sooner then later.lol

There is suspense to that video. When a qb throws 513 yards you start to wonder how its possible that he might not even have one touchdown pass...not until the final throw.

This clip proves what a difference having a great offensive line makes. Clean pocket all game long . If Daniel Jones had this kind of time in the pocket with the quality of recievers Phil had, he thrives his first 3 years.

Crazy (& unimpressive) thing to me.. Simms basically telegraphed every pass. Almost no looking-off defenders, virtually no play-action fakes. Simms just took the snap & watched his intended receiver the entire play. No real long balls either. Still a great yardage day tho.

Strange stats: 513 yards, but only one completion for more than 30 yards (and 32 at that). Sacked 7 times. Only 1 TD pass against 2 INTs. And the Giants lost. Bavaro looked great, though.

Most of the time when you see Qb's throwing for 400+ yards, they're the losing team and the other team is giving all those underneath plays to kill the clock !!

Not as impressive as the NFL Monday Night Football game, Nov. 17, 1975, featuring the Bills with O.J. Simpson's 200 yards rushing vs. the Bengals with Ken Anderson's unprecedented 447 yards through the air--every one needed to defeat the Bills--and in the era of the "dead ball" when the game was played on the ground, when scoring was low, when an Isaac Curtis could be mugged all the way down field and when a QB like Anderson could be harassed, blinded, tackled high and low within a rapidly collapsing pocket. The game showcased the old game emphasizing defense and rushing vs. the new game devised by Bengal coach Paul Brown and his quarterback coach Bill Walsh to use the high-percentage pass to be competetive against bigger and brawnier teams.. The result was a livelier game with higher scores and more action. This 1975 game represented a contrast and a seminal milestone, giving the nation a glimpse of the future of professional football. (Of course, teams like Ditka's Bears would show that throw-backs to the Monsters of the Midway would occasionally re-take control.)

The 1985 season for the Giants made me crazy. They lost the division to the Cowboys despite being much better than Dallas. The Giants outgained the Bengals by 300 yards and lost. They should have beaten the Browns, and the Cowboys at least once, if not twice. The Giants should have cruised to the division and then played the Bears for the NFC title. It could have been back-to-back Superbowls for the Giants in "85 and "86.
