Yes i think you hit the nail on the head. They're using all their concentration struggling to read the script fast enough, so they can't even remotely concentrate on trying to make their voice performance sound good.

When they do, it's bad, but sport games have moved away from contracting the actual players. It's probably fairly expensive and nobody is going to care about them voicing themselves especially if it's so awful.

Also, it's worth noting that especially in the US, voice acting work is mostly reliant upon the VAs being really passionate about their work to make up for the industry being harsh. It pays very little, treats everyone as an afterthought, and works insanely fast, but especially in games or dubs. VAs usually only get a script at most couple days before recording, and they make ~$75/2hrs. They don't get any residuals from the sales at all, so that means that animated films that can make literally millions at the box office, the VAs performing the characters usually make a total of $150 - $300. If there's a lot of work to be recording like in a game, you _might_ end up making $1k or more. Especially if you've got professional athletes like this who are already getting more just from their likeness being used, and they make more doing just about anything else… I'm not surprised nobody pushed to try and get another take for these. At the end of the day, that's why the industry doesn't really care if there's a performance like this or if someone's performance literally carried the whole crazy plot - they all get paid about the same.

For some of the NBA games they only managed to get some of the athletes in the recording studio for an hour or 2 while in some other cases the athletes refused to go but due to being in some sort of contact they still sat and read the voice lines, from what I recall one guy sat at an airport and read his lines once.

Yeah but like, a lot of professional athletes got pro through sports related scholarships, and so only put in the bare minimum to qualify in terms of academics and spent the majority of their time training. In the end you get a lot of subpar reading comprehension and literacy but over average athletics.

A special shoutout to Robert Belgrade as Alucard, downright iconic performance. All of his lines during gameplay are burned into my skull at this point, lol

For the time, the VA was definitely high quality. I think most people just have an issue with the bad translations.

@@RichardHennigan Was the translation bad though? It's not like there were any grammar issues or odd phrases. If the lines were changed significantly after translation, nothing about them stands out that would make me suspect that. I don't think I suffer much from nostalgia goggles, but I thought maybe this was an exception. After going back and rewatching the scenes... I just don't see the bad. If that was a recently-released game, I doubt I'd be scrambling for a Japanese voice option. The only issue I can think of is that players found how dramatic and formal they were talking to be cringey. But it all seems fitting in the setting. Look at Dracula and tell me he _wouldn't_ talk like that, sitting on his throne with a glass of wine, waiting for Richter to fight through his minions.

I think it was mainly Richter’s performance that was really bad. Like dude sounds like he just walked off the porn set.

@@thegreatgonzales6813 Iono, I'm just not hearin it. If anything, I felt that some of Alucard's acting was a bit flat compared to everyone else's. Not bad, definitely nowhere near the other examples in the video (the gap in quality is _huge_), but he just didn't seem as into it as the rest.

its one of those things no one talks about in sports but is very much a problem in that some of them hit the big time but can only ____ at grade school level. which is one of the reasons the sports have implemented money spending lessons.

@@pieV3000 the players are often doing sport's scholarships and as part of said scholarship they have to learn a language, so the coaches force them into learning a "easy" language usually it's Swahili, from a news story a few years ago they interviewed 2 or 3 years of scholarship students and asked if they ever felt the need to use Swahili and only one said he met a guy in an airport one time and they had a quick conversation in Swahili. From my understanding they pick the language to say that for the duration of the scholarship the students learn something but it's also picked so for most of the day the students would be free instead of stuck in school studying, so more time to practice basketball.
