In this episode of HEAT EATERS, Chef Esther Choi explores the spicy food ICONS of New York City! Think classic NYC staples, with some major heat. Her journey begins at the legendary Scarr's Pizza, where she samples the 'Hot Boi' slice loaded with spicy pepperoni, jalapenos, and drizzled with hot honey. Next, Esther hits up Han Dynasty with renowned food TV icon and native New Yorker, Andrew Zimmern, for a Sichuan feast spiked with chilis and Sichuan peppercorns. Han Dynasty founder, Chef Han Chiang, also throws in an extraordinary surprise: an off-menu Habanero-infused Bull's Penis specialty. The spice trail continues in Midtown Manhattan where Esther is joined by her friend and fellow New Yorker, Chef Eric Adjepong, for a classic meal at the Tik-Tok famous Adel’s Halal Cart. The order? Lamb and chicken over spicy rice, topped with four different sauces and french fries-the stuff of legend.

I'd like to provide some context that nobody asked for here. The term "Halal" means "permissible" or good to eat for Muslims. Due to the extreme popularity of The Halal Guys, this type of cuisine i.e. meat/chicken over rice has become almost synonymous with the term for those who aren't aware. In actuality, there can be Halal pizza, Halal burgers, Halal tacos etc. not just chicken over rice. The closest comparison would be Kosher food. It just means prepared in a certain way, not the actual type of food/cuisine. Still delicious regardless.

I was about to comment something similar! Halal is a religious dietary guideline, similar to kosher, but not a specific cuisine. However, that platter looked amazing!!

Oh! I just love a bit of spicy pizza. Got to tell you about a super good one I made today. Neapolitan dough. Crushed tomatoes with miso, gochujang, soy sauce, sesame oil, gochugaru and sesame seeds. Italian cured sausage. Mozarella cheese. Day old fermented red Chili and persimmons in honey and pumpkin spice. This was a crazy good fusion. Love your hot and spicy challenges. That New York style spicy pizza looks super good though. I've got a few more to try out now.
