We head out to Queens to try some of the best South Indian food in New York. And guess what? It’s hidden in the basement of a Hindu temple. We meet with temple-goers and chefs to talk about their legendary dosas and see how the Temple Canteen has cultivated a community for South Indians and Queens folk alike.

Suvikhya Siingh it is not about Dosa being temple food. It's about finding authentic food. Most restaurants don't really offer authentic food- they change things up to make it more suitable for the taste of the locals there.. or they change things up, because they need to substitute ingredients-- Gaby said that if you want to try authentic food, the food offered in temples is usually very authentic

So misleading- the canteen/restaurant is NOT in the actual basement of the Bowne Street Hindu Temple itself. The canteen/restaurant is in a separate building NEXT to the temple. You exit the actual Temple and walk into another building, or enter that building from the curb side. The canteen/restaurant is NOT actually in the basement of the Temple, but you can probably say it is on "Temple grounds". The actual Temple basement is just an open space /"empty hall" ready to be used for a variety of other things. There is also a Dosa Hut restaurant above ground next to the Temple. Once Upon A Time, like in the 1980's , the stretch of Main Street right across from Patel's Grocery had at least 10 Indian shops with freshly made sweets, the latest Bollywood VCR rentals, fresh samosas, some Sari shops, etc. All has now been swallowed up by the Communist invasion of Queens, where they don't want your business if you can't read their language. On the opposite spectrum of Hindu Philosophy and Religion, it is probably ANYTHING GOES as to what may be listed on some of those other Asian menus.
