@@acbenepe i think he had to stay in the hospital over a week , he did tell me it was a junkie who had stabbed him and john belushi played the drums for him while he was in the hospital , im not sure how many nights or just the one night / day , ya they helped raise money for the hospital bill

I guess with a name such as CBGB the intent was having country and bluegrass bands play. Was there any country and bg bands?

@@apextroll There were some early on. But the Big Idea was to be an incubator for unknown Lower Manhattan musicians to perform original work. There were huge ASCAP royalty and musician union pay scale savings. And there were thousands of unemployed musicians in NYC with nearly no place to play.

@@DWilliams-ce8nb I see. I wonder if Earl Scruggs played there. Seems like it would right up his alley given he was open to experiment, but I think he was more involved with the Laurel Canyon crowd.

High school for me was the early 90s when the place was already in a downturn. But my buddy was a roady for a couple of indy bands that played there as well as Arlene’s grocery and cafe Wha so we use to sneak in with him and what bands perform. Until we got caught and booted. Fun times.

Where he died is now Japanese butcher with a invitation only Japanese restaurant upstairs Vatvato’s isn’t just a super fancy clothing store. John loves Rock n’ Roll and has clothed dressed Aerosmith, Jimmy Page,ZZ Top, etc. Store sells records and vintage hifi gear that belonged to John. He apparently collects hifi There were great ad campaigns the early Varvatos years featuring them and others. Plus live performances during fashion week when the event was cool.

You had to step over drunken bums on the walkway to the front door, the joint looked like the MUNSTER'S living room, and the crowd was a mixture of spray-painted jacket-wearing, rebel punks, celebrities & the press. The sound system was truly beyond awesome with the finest professional stage lighting & two twenty-four-track recording decks parked next to the console. The bathrooms looked like a blown-up bomb shelter, the dressing rooms had a dirty graffitied hanging sheet instead of a door & on some nights the only beer you could order was SCHMIDTS for a fixed price of $3.00!!!!! BUT IT ALL WORKED FOR SOME CRAZY REASON & NOW IT IS A LEGENDARY MONUMENT & RIGHTLY SO!!!!! Is there anything I left out? Please comment back. @@RBPAudio Thnaks for that link--seeing The The again was great and it brought back many memories, as did your description of CB's! I loved the insane dressing room and the bathrooms which were indescribable, really. I remember sneaking down those steps with our vial of cocaine and taking a few hits before bounding back upstairs to do the set! haha I know people rave about the sound system but I found it so bad! I could never hear the monitors and the sound would just bounce all around--it would always throw off my timing! But hey, who cared?! lol I loved that place just because of the amazing atmosphere. It really was unique. And you're right about the homeless men outside. Omg. lol But then you'd step inside, into a whole other world! I remember going to the Kiev after CB's and getting blintzes for like $2.00. lol Ohh those were the days. We were lucky to have been at the right place at the right time to have this once in a lifetime experience! Thanks again for the link and for your thoughts.
