⁴ᴷ NYC Subway R65-Type Pump Train

An interesting piece of equipment, the pump train is made up of several converted old R17/R21/R22 type cars and an R65-type pump car. The R65 cars were built using extra R62 passenger car shells.

A salute to all these workers that collect garbage and work at late night hours. It's a dirty job but someone has to do it and get to drive a train a dream a lot of us dream about.

I honestly never knew these trains existed but it makes sense because water in the tunnel can short out the 3rd rail and cause a loss of power in the tunnels.

I’ve seen the garbage train several times. Usually late at night but I’ve seen it earlier in late evening I think a few times. Pretty cool

Is it weird that I remember seeing one of these trains in "daylight" hours? Like, early afternoon? But for real, it's so interesting seeing clips like this. I'd see these trains late at night or randomly during the day sometimes, and I'd always call them "ghost trains" since they looked so weird compared to the stainless steel cars I was used to seeing

It depends on management! Usually, you'll see miscellaneous equipment run anytime between post PM-rush hour and pre-AM rush hour! But, there are certain circumstances that warrant these trains being transferred at oddball hours.

Redbirds! Yes, modified and rusting, but it's still (in an odd way) good to see that some of the classics are still running! Won't likely happen but it would be so neat if they would be restored back into their 1960's NYCTA appearance but that would involve some big bucks.

The garbage train operates on Midnight shift. The pump train operates during disasters. Non employees will never see it.

When. I saw no people. It might have been reflection of the trains head lamp. However, if there where people, its most likely MTA construction crews working in the tunnels. They have a signal man stationed with a flag, whistle, and radio furthet up the track to relay the signal of an oncoming train to the foreman, who then blows his whistle to warn the workers of the train, and they all get in little cutouts in the tunnel. So the train runs and the workers live.
