I always felt that viola is like the middle child who tends to be overlooked by the parents(audience) until I heard this performance. I just love the sound produced by this very talented musician. It's so rich and complex, like the world class wine. Bravo!!!

“It’s so rich and complex, like the world class wine.” That’s exactly how I felt when I first heard his playing. Seldom has the viola been given such a dominant role in a performance. I believe God sent him to bring out all the glories in viola to this world.

A very Korean Irish violist playing an Austrian sonata with such a delightful and velvety rich tone, under the inspired baton of a Korean conductor. also. Although classical european music doesn't belong to the Asian tradition, obviously, may God bless the day when you guys decided to embrace it and made it your own. The dreamlike realm of classical music would be way much poorer without that plethora of Asian musicians, which are present today on all big world stages and orchestras. I bow before your exceptional talent and relentless dedication to music! With love, from Romania!

Richard Yongjae O'Neill is incredible - his mastery of the viola puts a gorgeous twist on some of the most incredible violin pieces there are. This is a beautiful example of his skill, and how a viola can sing. I recommend listening to his playing of Biber's Passacaglia

I saw Mr. O'Neill few day ago at the Santa Barbara school of music and that was wonderful performance you can see how the player and the instrument become one. I just love it.

I went to see Richard's performance today. His performance was amazing and gave him a warm smile. When he introduced himself, he said that the local meat restaurant was delicious, which made his joke interesting. I am already looking forward to hearing classical music from him. Among the songs he played, the song of Dvorak Serendade for Strings op 22 was very impressive. I want to see his performance again.

Wonderful arrangement by Dobrinka Tabakova, whose original music is outstanding (especially string writing): allows viola to be heard as equal partner to strings without undue posturing. O'Neill's interpretation is exciting, and he is an excellent violist.

I guess it's just the lack of opportunities to shine since a lot of classical pieces utilize the viola as more of a secondary/background addition to the orchestral sound. Leads tend to be written for violins and cellos. But I see the underrated appreciation for viola as a good thing. If you're looking for a chance to play in a symphony or a quartet... You can bet you will have a lot more chances to perform because you will be highly sought and be a valuable addition to any ensemble. The other great thing is that viola players have the chance to take viola playing to greater heights as time passes. Who's stopping great musicians of this generation from writing more viola solo pieces? I'm starting to see more viola featured in contemporary/modern genres as well which is nice to see. Young and talented youth who are spearheading the push to bring the viola to the forefront.

Thank you for playing so well. 🌻🍀 ♧ Arpeggione Sonata 1824년 슈베르트 작곡 장르 chamber(실내악) 1악장 Allegro Moderato 2악장 Adagio 3악장 Allegretto '아르페지오네'는 1823년 요한 슈터워퍼에 의해 발명된 악기이름이다. 별칭은 '기타 첼로' 이 악기는 오늘날 기타와 유사하게 생겼으나 첼로처럼 활로 문질러서 연주하는데서 붙여진 이름. 현재 악기는 사라지고 첼로 혹은 비올라로 연주. 1824년 여섯현의 아르페지오네를 위한 곡을 의뢰받아 작곡함. Splendid performance of this excellent arrangement. Shows what can be achieved on the viola (favourite instrument of Mozart, Dvorak and many others. Beethoven played viola too.)

Bravo! I've heard Richard play other chamber music or I wouldn't have listened to this - I generally only listen to the original with piano. I'm a violist, and know this piece well, and I like what he does with it - he's playful in the parts I think of as playful, and his phrasing is perfect. I'd really like to hear him do this in the original instrumentation.

Dès les premières mesures , l'on ressent profondément que cette version moderne est très bonne et amplifie celle pour piano et violoncelle qui reste la version de référence tout de même .
