There are so many KZfaqrs and Skaters coming out and saying that Nyjah was robbed. I’ve even seen people who don’t like him or his style and don’t prefer his skating who are admiting he should have been SOTY. Crazy.

I feel like anyone who doesn't think nyjah deserved this year soty either hasn't skated long enough to understand the difficulty of his tricks or are straight-up hating. His "need that" part is something we will appreciate years to come and will be the most memorable part of this year.

I lost so much respect for Chima from his words on that podcast. He just throws out allegations at first then goes “oh I don’t know if it actually happened, just heard a tape is going around, never been to his house.” If you don’t know for sure that a legit abusive crime happened then don’t even mention it, especially for a guy as famous as Nyjah, allegations like that can legit ruin lives of innocent people. Thought he was one of the more respectable guys in skating but honestly Nyjah carries himself as a really mature and bright guy. Especially for having such a crazy father, being famous and wealthy so young. Doubt he even finished middle school so I’m genuinely impressed with how bright he comes across. And Chima shut your mouth if you don’t even know what you are saying happened.

Nyjah's two recent parts were mind blowing. They are the type of parts that will go down in infamy. Tyshawn's parts were good, but I couldn't tell you one trick in it besides the ollie over the table. He definitely doesn't deserve to be a two time winner. This is some weird stuff.

Of course Tyshawn remembers THPS, he was in the latest version. This is probably the most disputed SOTY award I can recall and think the award is tarnished, but this ordeal will be forgotten about by March. I think Gifted Hater's vid was taken down because of the accusation with Tyshawn strong-arming Thrasher into giving him the award in exchanged for the train track bs flip. For those will never forget this SOTY run, it has left a bad look on the mag and on Tyshawn Jones [he really wants to beef with other skaters and their video parts?]

So one thing I think needs to be addressed when talking about the accusations against Nyjah is Chase Webb. After this scandal had sorta "broke" a couple years ago (when the supposed video got leaked), Chase lost all of his sponsors, stopped posting on IG, and Nyjah and D-Loy start to act like they have no memory of him. Its for that reason that I think something DID happen, I just don't think (or at least know) that Nyjah was directly involved

Nyjah is also freakishly consistent at huge gaps. He left a party one night to just land a switch big heel down Hollywood 16 in a few tries. He stuck roughly 5 bs flips (including the first attempt) down el toro. He landed on more and was closer to rolling away than Sheckler’s attempts and that’s saying something. His parts prior to ‘til Death had loads of massive gaps. I think in Rise and Shine he does the biggest switch heel I’ve ever seen. He’s said interviews that he rarely skates gaps anymore to help save his knees, which you gotta respect since he’s been jumping down shit since age 11 and wants to skate his whole life. He’s freakishly good at every style of street skater he just enjoys rails the most. Need That still had decent variety of gaps, tech ledge (and rail) tricks, even one super clean manual (many skaters don’t have any in their parts, Tyshawn included). Nyjah is just a superior skater in every way and much better person because Tyshawn acts like a asshole and some of his personal friends say he always has been lol

I agree with all the points you made. I do think that the Jake Phelps factor Hass to be considered though. The year he did not give it to Dennis. He explained that “he skates in German”. Some people’s style is not “thrasher” enough. same reason Shane O’Neill will never win it. It’s not about the best tricks or video alone. You have to rep their philosophy. I can see how TJ has the edge in that essential category.

Tyshawn was my last choice of the four. Whatever your opinion of him, Nyah deserved it this year hands down. He killed it.

SOTY has ALWAYS at least in part been about the dudes at Thrasher thinking you "rep the mag" and aren't a kook. Phelps said this multiple times. There isn't a single SOTY winner in history who wasn't deemed cool by the mag in terms of attitude, fashion, and sponsor connections along with being an incredible skater that year. And there's always other people you could argue could have or should have gotten it that year. For example, the year AVE won-- he had a great year and had been killing it for years (but then so had a lot of dudes) Was he objectively the most insane skater putting out the absolute best shit that year? No. he wasn't. Did he have an insane year for his age and Thrasher loves his vibe? Yes. Bottom line -- Thrasher really likes TJ and thinks Nyjah's a kook. It's all subjective. This is not the super bowl or NBA finals.

For a video titled "Accusations and Lies", you accused Tyshawn of claiming he said his company was the "first" black owned skateboard company, and then literally played the video clip and there was no example of him claiming being "first," so that was a lie. When he said he was the only black owned skateboard business and looked at Nak I felt he was throwing shade at Illegal Civ because Mikey Alfred had been beefing with Nak recently and his recent story posts have "black business" all over them when trying to call the younger kids who didn't want anything to do with IC racist. I doubt Stevie is majority owner of DGK in present day, DGK/Kayo has turned into something completely different then when it first started, and Max Allure was started by Nick Lockman and Karl Watson, I don't know what the actual ownership looks like there. Tyshawn being in the business might actually have a lot more knowledge on the inside business of skateboarding, it might be possible his is currently the only majority black owned skateboard company or he could have just been throwing shade at some of the current stuff going on which I thought he was doing.

Mainly speaking on the mention of “Black owned skateboard companies”. The mention of Kareem and Stevie owning those companies can be disputed. They “ran” those brands to an extent, while World Industries and The Kayo Corp actually owned the companies. That’s the biggest difference. I actually talked to Kareem, while he was still at World, during the those days, so it’s no disrespect towards him…or Stevie either. Karl and what he’s doing may be something different though, but I still feel “if a person isn’t in the office handling the day to day operations, while letting someone do the work, they aren’t actually an owner…they are an investor who’s likeness is being used to promote the brand. This is why a couple brands under Kayo aren’t around too; letting someone else move money around to save a brand, while letting others take the fall. So, if Tyshawn is putting up 100% of the capital to make this company from scratch, then it’s truly his company. Granted with the success of his endeavors so far, success should follow the “King” brand. He doesn’t have to try to make another huge company like board companies of the; he only needs to make what he desires, as for product, and the rest is just people feeling what he and the company are doing.

Based on Schmitty’s podcast (Talkin' Schmit on KZfaq) with Mark Suciu that dropped Dec. 13, he mentioned in the intro that at the time of filming, it would be Suciu’s last week as SOTY as they would be announcing that Tyshawn is the winner. Meaning they already picked the winner a week / weeks before even asking for poll voting on their site. This is a solid validation straight from a Thrasher employee.

It's all so crazy to me what's become of this whole "Thrasher SOTY title." It was invented as something cool, and to recognize the skater who truly went all out and above and beyond THAT YEAR. Now it truly has turned into a popularity contest. I've been skating for a LONG TIME, and have seen the many inceptions of Thrasher Magazine. I DO think that skaters put too much validity into who Thrasher chooses as their SOTY. Cuz it is THEIR SOTY. I understand that the skate community doesn't agree with their decision. I personally liked how Ishod said "Louie did all that skating THIS YEAR and also traveled a LOT. Not just Cali or New York City, but ALL OVER THE WORLD." So, while there are many sides to this whole conversation, and I DO agree with most of what you said here, you have your opinion, I have mine, and THRASHER obviously has their own based on whatever they base it on....everyone should just go SK8. We have 8 inches of snow here, so our only options are indoor sk8ing, snow sk8ing, or snowboarding.

Hands down Nyjah put out parts this year that changed skateboarding, and took the rail game to a level beyond what's been done. This has happened a few times over the course of skate history. (Jamie Thomas Welcome to Hell, Pat Duffy Questionable and both of these guys never got SOTY) Tyshawn continues to take his style of skating to levels that no one else is even getting close to. His pop is incredible its the best I have ever seen live with a close second to Andre Genovese. Both Tyshawn and Nyjah are deserving of SOTY, shit all of them deserve it (Louie was my pick). What this video is missing is the politics of skateboarding and actually how it all works. The Thrasher voting poll most likely counts for about 50% of the vote. The other 50% is where the politics come in. Who reps the mag the most? Who has the best advertising sponsors? Who do we like the most? Photographers picks? If Thrasher just left it up to the skateboard community it would be legit, but that's not going to happen. In the end, Tyshawn looks better on a skateboard than Nyjah. To me, Louie looks better than both of them and is humble. That's my SOTY.

I don’t think Nyjah should’ve won, but I don’t think Tyshawn should’ve won either. I think it’s valid to not give Nyjah SOTY because of the way he conducts himself. SOTY isn’t about who is the best skater, it’s about who embodied skating the best and personally I went to skating because it wasn’t a full jock sport, it didn’t have the same competitiveness that a sport have and had more expression. Nyjah doesn’t make me want to skate, and I know a lot of people who Nyjah doesn’t inspire either so I understand why he didn’t win it
