Some shots of nylon machining. It might give an idea how to deal with it to people who are going to do it for the first time.

Something to note is that nylon can absorb coolant. This can affect dimensions. It also likes to warp after machining if there is lots of heat, or if there is too strong of clamping or cutting forces. I have seen nylon parts measure slightly differently a few days after turning a large diameter. If you’re trying to hold tolerances within a few thousands of an inch it sometimes is best to not use coolant and to take finish passes after the part has been unclamped for a little. Clamping too tightly on nylon in a three jaw chuck can also cause features to be out of round, and bulge outwards making it slightly triangular. This is because the three jaws compress the material triangularly, and then you take a cut making it round. After it is unclamped from the jaws it may spring back into its original shape, causing your once round features to be warped.

Also, sharp tool, deep depth of cut, stronger feed, and positive rake angle seem to work well. When drilling you have to be careful because of the heat. It is good to use air if you can, and use drills with a smaller web. This allows more room for chip evacuation and prevents some of the rubbing.

@@richie50 Every advice is welcome! I didn't know about nylon absorbing coolant. Also I fastened the part pretty firmly in the chuck. And in the end I mounted bearings in some of these parts (i made some rollers for my belt grinder) and guess what? - The day I was machining it they came in really soft and the next day it was pretty hard to get them out. So it seems you're absolutely right here. Thank you!

Awesome video, thanks you! I'm trying my hands on nylon for the first time tomorrow, and this will be very helpful information to have.

Nylon can be such a bitch to work with. If you have a big diameter that you need to remove a lot of material from, make a big deep cut with an angle grinder or something else so that the chip keeps breaking =)
