NYS&W SU-99 goes through dangerous crossing

This video was shot at the Park Place/Main Street crossing in Butler NJ.
This crossing is very dangerous. Not only is there 2 main roads intersecting here, but aslo the railroad crossing is here as well. The motorists stop on the tracks and they dont pay attention to the gates or lights. There is also a "Do Not Stop on Tracks" sign here, but no-one pays any attention to it.
Something has to be done to this crossing. There is bound to be an accident here one day.
Crossing Info:
Signal #1 (on left, closet to camera): 2 pairs of Safetran 12x24 inch lights and a Safetran gate motor
Singal #2 (on right, closest to the camera): 3 pairs of Safetran 12x24 inch lights, a Safetran gate motor, and a Safetran Mechanical bell
Signal #3 (on left, across tracks): 3 pairs of Safetran 12x24 inch lights, a Safetran gate motor, and a Safetran Mechanical bell.
Signal #4 (on right, across tracks): 4 pairs Safetran 12x24 inch lights, and a Safetran gate motor.

That looks like a very nasty crossing indeed. They should consider an island in the middle with gates covering most of the road. There are huge gaps between them, especially from the top of the T. I can see cars taking chances with trains easily turning left onto Park.

Adding traffic signals seems like the only logical solution, other than closure. And judging by the lack of nearby crossings, closure isn't a feasible option from an E-911 standpoint. I don't see that there's really much room available to redesign the intersection... Doesn't even look as though if they could possible re-align the streets a bit to even build an overpass. I wonder if the railroad authority would consider installing quad gates?

I agree with you about the traffic light, thats basically the only thing they can do here. They can't get rid of the crossing, its a major connector down from butler to route 23, a overpass can't be built either because of the buildings all around, plus the Butler Police Department is close by to this crossing. Quad gates could be do-able here, now that you mention it.

Nice video! You picked a great angle. Looks dangerous with all the directions a vehicle can cross from. Too much access. They should consider at least blocking part of that parking lot so that a vehicle doesn't inadvertently pass between the gates when the exit. I just noticed as the gates went up there are four lights on the gate to the left on the other side of the tracks. An extra light for pedestrians? First time I've seen this.

Thank you my friend! This angle is really the only safe one to get this crossing, there is another one, but i would be standing in the road to catch it. Thats a good idea, there is a gap between gates Yes there is an extra light, NYS&W does this often and they add an extra light to the long road gates too.

They do this in MA too, I know that they do it so the pedestrians get a light too or just another light for the drivers. They mostly do it on 2 lane+ roads! :)

+Amtrak productions They do it here in MI. It takes the current state of the traffic light, and repeats it for pedestrians. If you find that confusing, This is better. If you are facing the green light, Your little pedestrian light is green, too. But a separate light doesn't stop anyone from (literally) Running a red light. Ha ha, Get it? Running? Cheesy joke.

Is the distance of the gates apart from each other makes the crossing dangerous?

Angie H No, actually its the way the crossing is setup. The crossing is located at the intersection of 2 main roads, and when you come to the intesrsection, you litterly have to pull out onto the tracks to see if there are any cars coming before you turn left.

Nice! I agree, this is a dangerous crossing. I've seen numerous cars stop on the tracks.

Thank You Yes it is, i was even talking to a Butler Cop and he said he's seen some close calls, suggested i talk to the Sargent of Butler PD and maybe he can contact the railroad. They need a traffic light here.

Good. When I lived near there it just doesn't didn't look safe. The engineer can't even see around the corners to hit the brakes in time. I hope the town does something.

Look Out For The Train No he cant, the crossing is in the middle of a curve and there is a building before the crossing that makes it hard to see. Not only that, there is only one sign telling drivers not to stop on the tracks, but stop line is so far back that when they come to the crossing, they cant see cross-traffic so, they pull out onto the tracks to see, and thats when the close calls happen.

This crossing should be removed and be a dead end on both sides of the crossing. When that happens people could easily see an SU-99.

+Freedomtowerman Productions It is fine the way it is. There have been no accidents (yet) and even though there are idiot drivers if they want to stop under a crossing that's their problem not yours or anyone else's.
