What Do Europeans Think About American Life? | NYT Opinion

We asked young, ordinary Europeans to take a look at U.S. policies on everything from food to guns. As they discover facts about America, they’re not impressed.
Sometimes it’s useful to get an outside perspective. In the Video Op-Ed above, Europeans are shocked to learn that the American government does not guarantee social protections that citizens in other advanced economies take for granted.
Their reactions reflect how European governments prioritize citizen welfare, offering national assurances like universal health care and affordable education. Americans have grown accustomed to the exorbitant costs of basic human services, the absence of parental leave protection and the unregulated presence of chemicals in food - things that would “cause riots” in Europe.
It’s true that the United States grapples with a larger and more diverse population than that of any European country. But with the resources of the world’s largest economy and as keepers of the American dream, can’t policymakers find solutions?

Police in America are honestly not that bad. Europeans seem to actually trust American media outlets over DW or BBC funny enough. The BLM riots were mostly peacefull, but you would be delusional in thinking a large majority werent just spoiled white women burning down random peoples livelyhoods, for litterally no reason other than being bored during the pandemic. Police Brutality is a real issue in America, and both sides wanted to double down and fix the issue. But it seemed like a vast majority of spoiled white people sensationlized it as some "revolution" and began acting like clowns, and destroyed any unity between any political side into resolving the issue. George Floyd was a junkie, but he didnt deserve to have his neck caved in by some paid murderer. Imagine if the French stopped burning down government owned property, and began burning down apartments and their own people. Pretty sure the French police would actually get involved in that case.

@Ranid most of the European countries have militaries the only one that really doesn’t is Britain who technically have a military but really just rely on the other members of NATO. Also the California national guard trained the Ukrainian military which is why they are doing so good against the Russian military because they are using modern tactics on a military that has one a very lackluster tooth to tail ratio and two tanks designed before the invention of smart weapons

For some reason, The fact that the one guy only paid 18 euros per semester shocked me more than the people saying college was free... I have no idea why. As a University student in America my tuition per semester is around ~$20K, I am extremely lucky I only have to pay a fraction of that, but only because I got good grades and had connections with my university. A lot of my friends still pay upwards of 10K per semester, before factoring in room and board.

"European countries guarantee 14 weeks of maternal leave, some even cover paternal"... In Czechia you get maternal leave, which is 28 weeks (including 6-8 weeks before the expected delivery) and then you have parental leave (which can be taken by the mother or the father or they can even take turns) that lasts 2-4 years. And it always blows me away that elsewhere instead of years, they only count it in weeks...

At the same time it can provide a good quality of life for all its people as I outlined above. Being a real patriot isn’t about caring for a flag it’s about caring for your fellow country men and women. Yung Honey That hurts. I love America and sure we have problems (a lot of problems) but we also have a lot of positives to add to the mix as well. Our nation has plenty of natural beauty, immense levels of economic prosperity, business innovation, the amazing levels of racial and ethnic diversity from all over the world gathered in one single nation, and an internationally acclaimed constitution that safeguards the rights to the most crucial of individual freedoms. So I don’t think you should sell America so short, without at least acknowledging the many positives that it has to offer. It truly is one of the world’s greatest nations, if not the greatest!

Elisa Pajer You have the right to have kids, but that doesn’t mean you should. It’s not just America, lots of countries keep overpopulating. If we focus less on having kids and more on improving the world we wouldn’t need so many people in the first place. “It’s unfair,” tell that to the thousands of kids abused and killed every year by the parents that want kids they don’t need. Or what about people who have kids they can’t afford, ruining the child’s quality of life. Yeah, no, having kids is a privilege, not a entitlement, but as long as people don’t recognize that the world will continue to suffer overpopulation and lack of resources. Also land of freedom my left asscheek, the concept of America’s freedoms is only a dream that too many don’t want to wake of from. It’s only free when you get to make it that way.

This video is a full on propaganda exaggeration. The US changed a lot in recent years and the government plays a much bigger role. Is it the the EU? Absolutely not but the US demands personal responsibility and was founded on that ground. We Europeans love getting stuff getting handed to us by daddy government but the average American does not care. Americans don’t love to pay taxes, hence why services normal in Europe are not possible in the US. Also comparing the US to the EU is plain stupid. A single country with 330 Million citizens and thousands of cultures and opinions is nowhere near as easy to manage as a single Europe with a lot of countries.

What they fail to mention is you can get government grants for college in the USA. Idk why more people don't. Especially if you are poor you can get a grant that will pay for everything even your books and Gas to get back and forth from school. You just have to be proactive in signing up for yourself. We also have ways to pay for our health care and medical debt there are grants and programs to pay for almost anything..... I guess most people just don't get it automatically given you have to look into it and sign up yourself. EDIT: And you don't usually have to pay these grants back. Depending on the grant.
