Merkel joined her party at age 36, becoming secretary in the cabinet IV of chancellor Helmut Kohl 1 year later (this was in 1991). She has been chancellor for 12 years now and is 10 years younger than Trump. How is that "entering the field of politics late and without any prior background"?

36 is quite late in life (at least in europe) to join a party, especially since before that she worked as a chemist in East Germany, and she rose very quickly through the hierarchy of the party.

Still waiting for that disaster to start. Five years after the 'preacher's daughter' decided to let 1 mio refugees in. A decision based, after all I can see, solely on humanitarian reasons. 'Wir schaffen das!', she told us. We'll make it. And we DID. I will forever respect her.

She had no choice. The refugees were dying at the camps. The EU is a union for a reason. She could've selfishly let Austria and Hungary manage the crisis, but instead, alongside the other member states, made an effective plan to relive the humanitarian crisis. Merkel has my respect.

Word. But, well, maybe Trump in his indecipherable wisdom was just predicting the CoVid19 disaster? Which clearly is to blame on all the refugees from the near east / north Africa, who caught CoVid19 from smoking smuggled chinese cigarettes, and on their way to Germany met on a drug-dealer convention with some Mexicans who then brought CoVid19 into the US because there wasn't a *_tremendous beautiful_* wall !!! ... which means that obviously the democrats are to blame for the whole CoVid mess. Sad.

Doctorate in chemical pyshics, ex president of the European Council, she chaired the G8, Chancellor of the most powerful and thriving economy in Europe since 2005. An intellectual, seen as the leader of the EU, born in country which history was marked by hateful rethoric such as TRUMP'S and which led the German people into a bloodshed, a repented and wise Country. I could easily see why Angela is worried, she is the Strongest democratic leader in the world since Obama left office, and now the US, the biggest economy and the most powerful military in the world seems more worried in alienating nations instead of investing in its people, provide it with Universal Healthcare, empirical and unreligous education and higher free education. The US will regret this decision sooner than later, I'm an American who lives and works in Mexico City, Trump is a racist, hateful, blunt, instrument of disaster. Amazed how the US could commit such a crime against its democracy.

Since 2005 chancellor of the federal republic of germany. She is 21 years active in the field of politics NYT! Compared with Trump this sentence is absolutely ridiculous.

I wish you the best for your country where ever you come from to getting such a leader. I am so happy to grow up in a country with Merkel as chancellor. She has accomplished so many remarkable things for the world and I think without her the world wouldn’t be the same. I am very sad that she will leave office soon and hope that we‘ll get a leader like her again. And also wish the rest of the world to get more politicians like her. I think the world would be much better

Poor Greek governance is irrelevant ... the EU and IMF has knowingly trapped them in a currency that is suffocating them and German and French banks are profiteering from the suffering of the Greek people. +Jethro Jenkins Whatever the reasons for Greece economic failures, it is correct that trapping them in the Euro is their doom. When a country goes bankrupt like they did, the correcting mechanism of the market is a massive devaluation of the currency. This means that the countries products and services become very cheap in comparison to others. That, in turn, leads to economic recovery. With the Euro this can't happen as its value is held high by other economies, esp. the German one. Greece can't recover and is instead kept alive by transfers. Very bad. The reason? Well, the huge debt Greece has with governments and of course banks would also be devaluated. That certain people and institutions don't wan't, of course. The Greek are paying the price not only for their corruption, but for the poor investment others made with them. The greek and you and I. Because who's money is used to keep them alive and pay their debt? Taxpayer money from EU citizens.

From Wikipedia: '...in 1990, Merkel was elected to the Bundestag for the state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, and has been reelected ever since. Merkel was appointed as the Minister for Women and Youth in the federal government under Chancellor Helmut Kohl in 1991, and became the Minister for the Environment in 1994. After her party lost the federal election in 1998, Merkel was elected Secretary-General of the CDU before becoming the party's first woman leader two years later in the aftermath of a donations scandal that toppled Wolfgang Schäuble.' Trump sold houses.

I doubt that you live in Germany . You can´t possibly know how "native germans" feel/think about the current situation regarding the refugee crisis . You shouldn´t believe everything you read/sea in the media , especially not if it concerns a country that you´re not living in . I , as a native german person living close to cologne can say that ive never had any bad encounters with refugees or "illegal immigrants". And before you judge the chancellor of germany for not caring about "her people" you should take a look at our great economy , free healtcare and the non-existent studen loan problems :D

What?? as a German I felt offended, Merkel did welcomed nearly 1 million immigrants year 2015 and lol she has a political background prior to becoming Chancellor.. Germany is peaceful with a good leader, Trump and Merkel is way more different from each other

Wow, are you kidding me? Germany is one of the most social countries on earth. No one in the western world has dedicated more resources to help refugees than my county. It's the opposite of the current US government which certainly showed racist tendencies. We also have a much better healthcare system than the US or UK with automatic coverage for everyone, no matter their income.
