Amid politically charged flag flying, secret recordings, and eyebrow-raising financial disclosures, there’s something fishy about the behavior of the nation’s top judges. Are they ruining faith in the Supreme Court? Or is that the partisan reaction to the decisions coming from on high?
Michelle, Carlos and Lydia are joined by the Times editorial board member Jesse Wegman (www.nytimes.com/by/jesse-wegman) to discuss just how low the bar has gotten for the justices, and what could be done to restore America’s faith in the court.
Plus, Michelle weighs in on the beef of the summer.

I wonder how many past judges did the same thing but we did not have the technology to identify it and share it with the public. Not to minimize it but to find the positive that we are seeing the truth

In order to regain trust in the Supreme Court, a start would be for Gorsuch to consult Merrick Garland in order to find out how he should vote. Since he is a "constitutionalist" he should be ashamed of his appointment, and work to somehow right it.

More engaged citizenry? What does that mean? Am I expected to write to my rep telling him to do something? That's less effective than my vote (read, barely effective). The only effective engagement I'm aware of is getting rich enough to throw my weight around in the way that has already been done. That is obviously not ethical and is also how we got here in the first place. Not to mention the fact that I probably already command the largest salary I'm capable of - a not insignificant number but hardly enough to move the needle in any measurable way and still a vast sum of money more than most Americans. If the solution is for the average American to be more engaged, than we're screwed.

14th Sec 3 was ignored. In arguments, Colorado case couldnt use words like Coup, Sedition or Insurrection. Instead 'riot' and 'mob' were used by about four justices.

The best court reform would be to eliminate the filibuster. The ability to change the law (when one party has both houses and the presidency) in response to a supreme court decision would lessen the power of the court. In addition, it would allow congress to use the power of the purse to rein in the court.

So is voicing her opinion. Of course, like Ginni, her opinions are not to be mistaken as reflective of her husband's. Vergogna.

Imho the flag issue is a freedom of speech issue. The lack of ethics accountability is far more damning. Ie gifts and trips given to the members.

@@robinhood20253 Which rulings has Alito been inconsistent to his nomination with. That is the only thing that matters for the supreme court, are they living up to what they said when they were appointed. Not if they are morally aligned with today, not if they are dem/rep leaning, its whether they lived up to the congress that appointed them. Such that drastic changes of our law have some weight to our history and ideals of previous generations. When you get full loaded of any perspective, it leads to rapid unchecked change that can cause problems. Ideally the court would be made up from 9 different mainstream ideologies over the past 90 years that way when revising laws we don't get ahead of our skiis. They should be like the giver, holders of ethical memories for the modern day to learn from.

@@user-ww6cj4vp4rstare decisis and precedence mean nothing to a corrupt judge who accepts gifts from billionaires with business before the court. His belief in his imaginary friend, souls and the rest of the religious crap has no place in our laws. I love how disingenuous conservatives are revealing themselves to be. If these were liberal justices , my goodness the pearl clutchers would have their panties in a knot. Neither you nor that scumbag Alito were born with any right to decide if a woman stays pregnant . It's mysogyny and places the lives of all women in danger. Do you have daughters or grndaaughters? If so you better hope you are not in a red state where they would let her die before performing a necessary abortion. It's disgusting. When the first woman dies , they should be charged with murder.

7:00 - Whoever this political shill is, he is the continuing problem with the NYTs validity. Placing political OPINIONS into a FACTS discourse fervently skews the conversations from the Raw to the plausible. Frankly, its a disservice, and why i stopped listening to these apologists.

US Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito delivered a public speech mid November 2020, where he warned about the threats religious believers face in the US from advocates for LGBT rights. Alito correctly observed that the pressure American Christians face today surrounding their religious beliefs is akin to the strictures the U.S. placed on Germany and Japan after World War II. Alito went on to say “For many today, religious liberty is not a cherished freedom. It’s often used as an excuse for bigotry and can’t be tolerated, even when there is no evidence that anybody has been harmed. The question we face is whether our society will be inclusive enough to tolerate people with unpopular religious beliefs.” On another occasion, Justice Alito warned that not only is freedom of belief increasingly under threat, but freedom of expression is as well. "One of the great challenges for the Supreme Court going forward will be to protect freedom of speech. Although that freedom is falling out of favor in some circles, we need to do whatever we can to prevent it from becoming a second-tier constitutional right”

Alito is a religious nutjob who thinks his right to oppress people who have different views on freedom , rights and bigotry is a constitutional right. He is Pompous and full of misplaced self righteousness. He should be impeached or resign.

I am not aware of the government forcing any church to perform gay marriages or ordain gay folk as pastors, etc. The government isn’t stopping anyone from worshipping, attending church, praying, etc. I am not aware of the government forbidding Christians from honoring and trying to live up to the 2 greatest commandments: Matthew 22:36-40 New International Version 36 “Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?” 37 Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ 38 This is the first and greatest commandment. 39 And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ 40 All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”
