국악이 우리나라에선 소외받고 외국에선 관심받는 작금의 현실이 안타깝다. 내나이 30대 중반 나처럼 국악을 많이 사랑하는 젊은 사람들이 늘었으면 한다.

국악연주는 마치 어미 잃은 슬픈 새마냥 구슬퍼서 슬픈데 그 슬픔이 제마음을 어루만져주듯이 기분이 풀어지고... 연주중 더해주는 박진감 넘치는 추임새를 들으면 기분이 덩달아 좋아지면서 업! 기분을 들었다놨다 해주면서 마음이 살아있음을 느끼게해줘요 인생사 희노애락이 녹진하게 뭍어나는... 참말로 매력적인 연주라고 느껴지옵니다

When I was 10, I was trained to play Korean traditional flute Danso and DaeGeum(big flute in video) played it with team in Sydney opera house :). Our teacher taught us that playing Korean traditional instrument is not only about making harmony, we borrow the sound of instrument and speak through it. At the age of 30, I watched this video and truly understood what it means.

몇년 전부터 가끔 이 영상를 듣고 있습니다. 이런 훌륭한 연주를 올려 주셔서 너무나 감사합니다. 사회자의 안내도 있었지만 이런 연주는 참으로 귀하고 귀한 연주입니다. 다만 조금 아쉬움이 있다면, 음향의 조율에서 다소 부조화가.... 국내에서 이 연주를 전문 레코딩으로 후손들에게 남겨 주셨으면...... 그러나 모두 연세가 많으셔서 지금은 어렵겠다는 생각을 해 봅니다. 참으로 귀한 영상입니다. 관계자 여려분께 감사드립나다.

얼쑤! 할 대 진짜 기분 통쾌하다. 기본적으로 우리나라 음악은 한이 있어서 웃으며 노래 불러도 약간 슬픈감정이 깃드는데 얼쑤! 할때마다 싹 날아가는 느낌이다. 이 맞으로 보는거지~

In the first few moments the sound didn't make no sense at all, but after that i start realizing those instruments saying something and they have souls! It's so ethnic and artistic within... Amazing!

I have always enjoyed the unique sound of Korean traditional music, so different from us Chinese! This is truly a marvelous performance from all of the music masters, 30 minutes easily passed me by and every moment captured my heart. Thank you for sharing with us here.

@@NUSORCA Sinawi is developed with Korean shamanism. So it sounds out of tune and uncomfortable. If you imagine an evening time, a shaman wearing very vivid red, blue, yellow colored dress, dancing with knife with bells on both hands for hours. People often passed out during this ritual because of this weird atmosphere.

Despite all instruments were played with somewhat different directions, it is as if the soul of the music is walking towards the same direction with a weird sense of harmony so hard for me to explain.

Exactly. Sinawi is music of shamanism of Korea. It is supposed to be creepy and weird. Korean traditional music is very similar with early Jazz music. Instrument is just a tool for players and they are talking through their instruments. In this case, ghosts are speaking in weird harmony.

Very impressionistic, surrealistic and esoteric. All the elements that make this sound an eye opener!! I can see where artists like Fred Frith, Derrick Bailey , John Zorn and Elliot Sharp derive their influences. Maybe even the David Sylvian crowd. Viva la difference.

음악에 삶이 들어 있다~ 회한과 슬픔,흥,즐거움~무엇보다 한을 가지고도 흥으로 풀어내는 ~ 인생에 취한듯 술에 취한듯 그것이 녹아있는 삶의 음악이 우리것이 아니였던가?? 이것이 바로 슬픔,한마저도 흥으로 승화한 우리민족의 전통음악이 아닌가?? 말로 하는 판소리,오페라가 아닌 음으로 삶을 전달하는 삶의 노래이다.

After working 6:30 to 10:30 M - F and five hours on Saturday, all while swimming in Disco Pongchak, Trot, and K-Pop continually from multiple sources, go dancing Saturday night, get up well before first light, hop in a car with your buddies from the safety glass factory, and listen to this traditional court music on the radio in the dark with the rain pouring down as you drive through the farms on your way to the mountain you're going to climb. It's mind-blowing.

Imagine if the Beatles had gone to South Korea and heard this instead of going to India and learning sitar... :) That said, I've long felt pretty sure that the late great rockabilly guitarist Link Wray had the chance to listen to music like this when he was laid up in a hospital during the Korean War, the way he uses the whammy bar has a lot of affinities with shinawi and sanjo.

정말 고결함이 느껴진다. 찬란하고 위대한 조선의 영광이 우리의 민요 국악에서 넘쳐나네요. 일본이 부러워서 질투심으로 아직까지도 대한민국을 괴롭힌다죠. 일본의 계획된 식민교육으로 거짓된 허구의 열등감을 만들어냈음. 대한민국 국민은 위대합니다. 문화 계승 발전시켜나갑시다.

이런 영상을 볼 때마다 한국사람으로서 너무 슬픕니다. 우리 것이 최고다하면서 정작 우리의 것이 나오면 지겹고 재미없는 것이 되어버렸으니말입니다. 그러면서도 명량 등 애국심을 자극하는 류의 컨텐츠가 나오면 환호하는 우리들이지만, 실상 국악 등우리의 것들을 보여주면 졸지 않을 사람이 몇이나 될까요...

+정다은 국악 멜로디를 잘 들어보시면 악기들 마다 각각의 사람이라고 치고 저마다의 한을 풀어놓는 것처럼 들리죠. 사람이 말하는 억양을 가장 잘 표현할수 있는게 국악이라고 생각하고요. 국악기의 선율을 그대로 목소리로 옮기면 판소리가 됩니다. 하지만 술자리에서 친구 한풀이하는거 들어보신적 있으신가요? 물론 그런 비슷한 한이 설여있는 상황에 놓였을 경우라면 국악이야 말로 가장 공감되는 음악이 되겠지만 보통이라면 사람들은 들었을 때 즐겁고 기분 좋아지는 음악을 듣고 싶어합니다. 그런 컨텐츠가 국악에 많이 부족하죠. 그도 그럴 것이 역사를 봐도 한풀이밖에 할게 없었습니다. 음악은 공감이 돼야 듣기 좋은 법입니다. 누군가에게는 최고의 음악이 누군가에게는 최악의 음악이 될수 있는 이유도 여기에 있죠. 사람들마다 공감대가 다르다는데 있습니다. 조선사람들이라면 그 어떤 음악보다 국악이 공감됐겠죠. 그렇지만 요즘 삶과 비교했을 때 국악은 너무 멀리 있는거 같네요.

+dh son 단순히 감정을 떠나서 의식주가 바뀌었습니다. 문화가 바뀐것이죠. 한복을 입고 한옥에 산다면 모르겠지만 지금처럼이라면 국악에 공감할 분들은 지극히 소수일듯 하네요.

+Maro Angel 의식주에서만 한과 흥이 나오나요?? 사랑했던가족과 이별 사랑하는이를 두고서 잘해주지못하는 마음 부모님께 잘해드리지 못하는 마음등등 여러글로 표현하기 힘든 복합적인 마음들과 그로인한 삶의 결과물들. 삶이 단편적인가요?? 다재되어있으며 복합적인 얽힘으로 설켜있는걸 표현하는게 한이고 국악이라고 느껴집니다만 여러회한들 국악에 한만 존재하나요?? 절재된 흥과 락이 녹아있는 부분도 많습니다 클래씩 뉴에이지 힙합 헤비메탈 트롯트 시조까지 모든음악을 즐겨듣는 사람으로써 각음악장르마다 특색과 필링이 있다고 봅니다 개인 취향별로 들으심되죠 저도 10대 20대 후반까진 국악 가끔듣곤 했습니다만 30대이후부턴 자주듣게되더군요

@Eric J. Lim: I guess the genre is shina-eui 시나의. I think the guys I worked with at Hanguk Anjeon Yuri told me this was the music of royalty and/or nobility, and in English you might call it Royal Court Music. Don't quite trust my memory or understanding, though.

Only consumed as traditional form. Sinawi is music of Korean Shamanism. Literally music played in creepy rituals.

You are right. The instruments have their own distinct techniques, but not as complex. Use of chords is very rare, and chords would mostly be octaves or two notes. Making of the instruments do require years of training and the quality of the ingredients affect the sound drastically. Written music is also not very advanced as western music. Lastly, the instrument on the very left called GAYAGUEM only has strings for 5 tones; D E G A B C but switched around by pressing on the string.

사물놀이 is a percussion band.

사물놀이 is music played for festival or event, 시나위 is played for shamanism ritual. That’s why it sounds weird and creepy.

I don't understand this music, but it seems to be a lot of arppeggiation and tone bending without a lot of overall tonal movement. Don't get me wrong I love the sound and the rhythm, it just doesn't seem like very complex music. Am I wrong?

Hey, I know this is an old comment but I thought it might be worthwhile to reply just in case you see this. There is definitely a central "tonal core" to this improvisation, based in the scale (mode? these terms don't really fit in with traditional Korean musicology) of Gyemyeonjo, which represents sorrow (quite appropriate for a musical tradition based in the ritual dances of shamans to appease the spirits of the dead). That also helps to explain why there's little semblance of a "melody" as Westerners are used to it, as the improvisation and heterophony around this central theme is so heavily ornamented with wailing wide vibrato and arpeggiation (as you have pointed out) representative of the anguished spirits, to the point that it borders on unrecognizable to many people unfamiliar with the tradition. This type of music certainly isn't among the most complex that traditional Korean music has to offer, and although there is definitely complexity to be found nonetheless, I would suggest to a listener unfamiliar with Korean peasant music to just relax, sit back, and try to appreciate this music as a sort of "jazz" of a radically different style, richly imbued with the sense of "han". en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Han_(cultural)

Complex according to what? Maybe your dull ears cannot recognize all the nuances of microtones and just decides to demean it rather than respect as it is. Your ignorance will not either aggrandize your ego nor lessen the mastery and artistry of this music.

This is simply played in free style. There is no rules or score. This is music played for hours continuously during shamanism ritual.
