I think puke is way way grosser because its more relatable, hopefully, none of us has experienced horrible painful gore and torture. But! most if not all of us have puked at least once and we all know what it feels like/smells like/how gross it is when your drunk friend does it and you have to clean up after them. So thats my my game theory. Yikes
@Lukkilikka
@Lukkilikka 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah... I got experience with handling gore and cutting up bodies (animals, including swollen carcasses that smelled terrible) and gore doesn't bother me... in fact the way it looks fake a lot to me makes it even less gross maybe apart from some specific things... (some written descriptions of gore and dismemberment have felt worse for me and i prefer drawn gore over live action it feels more visceral somehow a lot of the time idk) but puke? gnghgng no! nono (just saliva and snot too tbh)... with gore it's about the pain i think puking is just gross
@tomithebunny
@tomithebunny 4 жыл бұрын
That's a really good point, AND there's the fact that people tend to be sympathetic pukers, so there's always the fear that seeing puke will cause you to go through the very unpleasant experience of puking again. As someone who struggled with stomach issues for a very long period in my life, I've become kind of numb to the "gross" factor of vomit, but it still reminds me so viscerally of being in SO MUCH PAIN. Especially since like...repetitive stomach issues led to general stomach pain associated with getting sick, AND dry-heaving just plain fucking hurts. Your theory is definitely right.

There is a theory trying to explain why seeing someone vomits make us nauseaus. Back in the old days, people didn't have the knowledge of what is suitable for eating and what's not. So, when someone from 'the herd' started to vomit after the meal, it could mean that everybody ate someting poisonous. Vomiting could help remove potentially harmful food from one's stomach fast enough, so a poison couldn't be absorbed into bloodstream. Basically, it's a reflex coded in the DNA, trying to save our lives. I don't want to go too deep into the topic, but the theory also explains why certain smells (not only the foul ones) and - for example - very stressful situations can make us feel nuseaus. I don't know why, but I find it fascinating... OK, enough with this rambling. I love your videos, May, even though I'm not a big fan of cinema myself. I like your personality a lot and the way you talk about films... I don't know, it's very refreshing. Hope you and your lovely wife are doing OK. Stay safe and healthy!

@@yourcutedarkoverlord This theory explains that, but English is not my native language and I'm not sure if I'm able to answer you in a coherent way. Basically, many reflexes are tied with our psyche, so as to intensify the reflex and associate it with the proper behaviour (so you are more likely to avoid this particular 'danger', but also similar 'dangers'; the stronger the reaction, the stronger the avoidance). If you don't have the bond between the reflex and your psyche, reaction could not appear or it would be weaker. Plus, if you are aware of the context in which the reflex kicks in, you psychological response to it will be different each time, depend on the context. Also, people have different response patterns - sometimes the reflex must be strong enough to cause any reaction in some people, whereas in others a faint one is more than enough, especially when the psychological bond is strong. Hope I answered your question at least partially. I'm aware this is very simplified explanation, but I hope it gives you at least some understanding. Bare in mind that this is just a theory, one of the few, and it's not free of flaws and unanswered questions. Hope you are well. Stay safe and healthy.

It's cool that you got to see the August Underground trilogy since they're fairly split with horror fans, especially in the underground community where you either love them or hate them. Fred Vogel, the director who played Peter throughout the series, said that he was inspired to make them back when he worked at the Tom Savini SFX School out in Pittsburgh and he was caught off guard by how his students did a lot of stuff relating to serial killers. He couldn't wrap his head around it and why people would like or "admire" that sort of thing. So, the series (especially the first one) was his commentary on how the media glorifies violence and serial killers, turning them into rock stars in their own sort of way. If I'm not mistaken, much of the victims are comprised of some of his students and family members; including the two who are assaulted in the convenience store sequence, where the door breaking was real but a total accident. As for what you said about how it looks like a VHS tape you might have found, it's funny that you mention that because that was originally his plan to promote the film by leaving copies of the tape in random areas of the country. However, that all went out the window because 9/11 happened shortly after they wrapped up and it wouldn't have been right to do.
@ianbyrne465
@ianbyrne465 4 жыл бұрын
Hm. That's really fascinating. Watching it with absolutely no context, it just seems like some fucked up weird fetish he wanted to get off his chest, but assuning this all factual and true, that makes a lot of sense. Human culture has a fascination with violence, and with people who perpetrate it. But in looking at it from the disconnect, of "he stabbed three people" it's much... I don't want to say "cooler" but I'm gonna say "cooler". The August Underground movies are really successful in showing this sort of person up-close as they would probably act, committing atrocity in horrible detail, unlike what you'll see in a police report/a book or show, and on top of that showing that they really aren't that glamorous. It's really fascinating. I will never watch them again, but it's fascinating nonetheless.

Despite the people disagreeing with you, I do agree that a lot of the purpose is because these men hate women. I think it's wild someone replied "why would he make a trilogy about a woman" as if misogynists don't spend their time RAMPANTLY obsessed with women, their lack of access to women, and their lack of control of women. Men who make film love to project violence onto women in many, many ways, and these shocking images being hailed as "art" or "meaningful" ends up becoming a feedback loop of encouraging misogynistic imagery to spread throughout art because it's viewed as transgressive. However, there's nothing "transgressive" about portraying the brutal murder of woman in a patriarchal society where women are brutally murdered every single day. Shrug. He hates women, and you're right.

This video is one I remember distinctly. Not because of every single item on the list, but because of it's place in the events of my life. The day this video came out was the same day I made a resolution to not rely on my only living parent. It hurt a lot, but coming to a concrete decision not to live with my abuser was ultimately good for me. I am in a much better place now than I was 3 years ago. I don't know if I've really processed it, but there definitely was influence on me from this 4 part series. The juxtaposition between the terrible things happening to me and the terrible things in these films, I think, helped to bring me to that sobering realization. I guess I'm trying to say thank you! Your stuff is still great, and your work helps people in ways you may have never guessed.

Fun fact about Gummo. I lived one town over from Xenia, Ohio. The scene where they sell the cats to the Chinese restaurant is sort of true? A restaurant not far from Xenia was shut down because the health inspector found cats in a freezer. The owners of the place claimed the cats were for personal use only and NOT for restaurant use, like that makes it all better.

Tumbling Doll of Flesh is easily one of the most f-ed up things I've seen, maybe even a little more than the August Underground movies just because of how realistic some of it is? Like, I know the snuff aspect is fake, but the stuff leading up to it was VERY convincing.

Well. I've heard of all of these movies except the last one, and watched a hunch of videos about them, and I thought, "The thumbnail is a picture of Tusk and how could that nice lady May gross you out?" so naturally I had a sandwich. I was doing great. Everything was fine. But then you hit that blender scene, and my sandwich regretted its location, and I, mid-chew on the last bite, regretted my cavalier decision to snack during this video. So, great work! I loved it, I loved the way you described the events, I loved the editing, and I love your cat. I'm so glad I don't have to watch these movies to know their icky, squishy contents. You're a freaking *champion*.

I have emetophobia and I stopped watching August Underground: Mortem like 2/3 through not bc I was freaked out but bc I was bored. honestly, maybe if there were subtitles I would have been more upset, bc I never had any idea what was happening. also I think, somehow, knowing these people agreed to actually do such weird things really dampens their impact on me. but I also can't watch two girls one cup and oh May just mentioned it as I'm typing this. good I'm on the right track. anyways, I have no idea what my brain's rules are. I think I'm gonna peace out of this video now after the severed head scene, I'm good, I don't need to know what a puke chamber is.

Just started watching your channel and blew through all your "hard mode" and "impossible mode" lists I went into it with my "hard mode" lists. I was impressed that you knocked off pretty much everything from my list. Thanx for letting me know about the handful that I hadn't heard of before. You probably know the few on my list that you didn't cover... but if anyone is interested... -Vulgar (Kevin Smith's OTHER hard to watch movie about a party clown who shows up to a gig to find it is three guys who torture and rape him) -Poughkeepsie Tapes (found footage that is visceral and disturbing and pulls from real world events) -Trent Reznor's "Broken" an imitation snuff film that only had a handful of copies made and each one was different so he would know who leaked it. -Paranoid Park (directed by Gus Van Sant) or Jennifer Fragments (these two are only hard mode if feeling guilty over a death that occurred when you were a child is triggering for you) -Jerry (another one by Gussy boy... must be something about having a 3 part monosyllabic name that makes you a miserable director spreading misery... Gus Van Sant... Lars Von Trier... anywho... Jerry is about standing in the desert and slowly dying and maybe you're watching your friend die too... or maybe its just you arguing with yourself about whether you want to die...) -premutos lord of the living dead (get your dick cut off... some parental neglect and your parents are swingers and also super over the top Italian gore. -Excision (can be a hard watch for mentally ill folk with guilt and shame over how it hurts others around them) -Big Money Hustlers (A very very hard watch for anyone who is not a Juggalo. We'd put this on when we'd had a party and trying to signal for people to leave)
