Revisiting this, I’m honestly less shocked/angry that this type of stuff exists, because it always will. I’m more angry that people spread it because they think these absolutely terrible things are funny, and that people being legitimately traumatized by it is funny. That sort of parasitic behavior and indifference to suffering is reprehensible.

I think the thing that helps Salo work and A Serbian Film doesn't work is that the guy who made it has made film adaptions before. Like, before Salo, he made a trilogy called The Trilogy Of Life, where he adapted three famous stories of the past (The Decameron, The Canterbury Tales, and A Thousand And One Nights (Arabian Nights)) to reflect the positivity and beautifulness of life. Salo was part of The Trilogy Of Death, which would show the dirtiness and negativity of life. Salo and Sodom would've been two different projects at one point, but were later combined into one. The second one (or just the next movie he wanted to make) would have been a biopic about Gilles de Rais, but was dropped when he died. Also while I was trying to look up the names for The Trilogy Of Life I had to unfortunately learn that he uh, he likes them young. Like, the "when he was 41 he met what he called "the great love of his life" when he was 15" kind of young. Really gross stuff. And to keep my note from the last time I saw this iceberg: Check out the Tetsuo The Iron Man soundtrack. It's some real good industrial metal.

Okay so Friday the 13th disturbs me for one reason and one reason only: they actually killed that snake in the bedroom/cabin scene earlier in the film. Brutally. The story of it is extremely sad, with the snake's handler apparently screaming and begging them not to do it. Genuinely soul-crushing to learn about in a way that very few other things are. They killed that guy's pet (?) right in front of him while he begged them not to. Extremely disturbing and something that makes me feel physically ill. If I'm wrong please fucking tell me I'd love for this to not be true.

With Midsommar, I think it's also a really good exploration of the insidious nature of far right radicalism and the desire to "go back to tradition" and how cult like the mentality is and as such, how it can easily suck someone in and how even observers might not realize what is happening.

I think the director was sincere in his intention and accomplished it. He knew Serbian Cinema was an arm of propaganda, especially during Milosevic. And a lot of his proteges are still in office. One is the current Prime Minister. So when you use any search result to find "Serbian Films" you get "A Serbian Film" as the top search result.

One minor thing I learned regarding the KT Trilogy entry (as an additional note) is that there are actually two things it could be: The collected works of Kiyotaka Tsurisaki of Orozco the Embalmer infamy, including The Wasteland (which isn't on the iceberg for whatever reason), and a series of *extremely* intense BDSM films with a somewhat artsy bent about which very little is available on the Internet. Given how low the entry is, I think it's referring to the latter, but the former is still one hell of a thing.

Yeah. It's weird bc I see people asking for the trilogy due to their penchant for bloodletting. I assumed that was part of the hard-core BDSM art house films.

i don't totally know how to phrase this cohesively but i used to do this thing where i purposefully looked for the most personally upsetting porn i could find and would just go into these obsessive binges where like, yknow I'd literally be dissociating and shaking pretty much the entire time bc I think my justification was that I was using it as some kind of cope? i dont really remember 90% of that experience bc i was literally so out of it throughout and my only thoughts were mostly just being constantly plagued by the media i was consuming, but basically I have some sort of deeply repressed childhood sex trauma thing happening and for some reason i thought watching porn that I knew would personally upset me in particular was a great way to deal with that. in hindsight i think it was more of a self harm addiction than a genuine coping mechanism, since it literally just further traumatized me and didn't help anything but all that to say I really appreciate you talking about how seeing some of the really bad shit can be genuinely traumatizing bc like, I'd never rlly heard anyone bring it up before and i think last yearish there was just like a solid month where literally every single night I would have nightmares sort of mashing together elements of all the shitty porn i saw so uh yeah thanks for talking abt your trauma, it's like, validating of my own trauma

We need to realize more that someone can be traumatized by things that don't happen directly to them. I saw a video on Twitter by accident of a particularly upsetting police shooting over 5 years ago and it still messes me up. I've heard stories of CSA that I can't stop thinking about for weeks. I see why you would think of watching things as a coping mechanism though. I did something similar after I was SAd, like if I just push through this fucked up stuff that I would "get used to it" and wouldn't be affected by my trauma anymore. It is/can absolutely be a form of self harm and its good that you were able to realize that!

In the “Don’t Fuck with Cats” documentary they showed portions of the “1 lunatic, 1 icepick” video and it was upsetting because it has no warning . If you watch this documentary be warned they show the videos of the animals dying and show portions of the real snuff video and it has no warning in the beginning. It wasn’t necessary for them to show actual videos the killer made in the documentary.

Not me thinking immediately "dont f with cats" at the beginning when you described how internet ppl don't appreciate and will come for you if you cross that line though... Shout out to living in the same city as Luca :$ Also your closing message was really well worded and a good way to think about it. Whether from curiosity or accident or whatever leads me to finding some things I think I handle the brain part well but it does give me pissed/vigilante esque feelings very strongly. Your note on it- more people are thinking f that which is good and the over all positive note of how it implicates us all to do our best is a lighter way of taking that feeling.

Where the Dead Go to Die is an extremely bizarre movie even apart from its nightmarish visuals. First of all, it's an anthology film that has three chapters in it. The first one's unsettling, but clearly meant to be an extremely dark comedy, since it's a parody of 50's shows like Lassy and Leave It to Beaver. The second and third parts are where the really nightmarish, trippy shit starts happening. The way the characters move looks off because all of the human animation was mocapped with a Microsoft Kinect camera. The last weird thing is that Mr. Screamerclauz, despite his status as an extremely obscure Z-grade horror film actor and director managed to get some notable actors with cult fandoms to act in it, like Linea Quigley and M Dot Strange. He later went on to make a few more animated horror movies as well as starting a series of unofficial American Guinea Pig movies.

It has some minor persistent nudity throughout because the mermaid is topless. It has some guts, lots of blood, and a fetus removal scene at the end. The biggest thing that sets it apart from the other Guinea Pig films content-wise is that the mermaid has a bunch of infected boils that gradually spread over her body as the movie progresses, and they start to ooze pus.

Also the bjork stalkers package never killed anyone, and his motives werent misogyny, idek where that claim comes from. He had erotomania as a symptom of his obvious psychotic disorder, and he was a racist. So her dating specifically a black man was what made him decide to make the bomb. Im all for calling social issues when you see them, but you need to be sure of /what/ social issues exist in the example if thats the approach you want to take. "He tried to kill a woman so hes a misogynist" is a completely tone deaf way to approach this topic, especially when theres actual video confessionals where he explicitly states his motives and talks about his racism. He might have displayed misogynistic perspective by being so fixated and terratorial of bjork, but the actual clinical diagnosis he got is not just as simple as repressed misogyny, and actually typically occurs in women

Interesting that you mentioned the one specific video that traumatised you as I can safely say I agree that is probably the single most fucked up thing I've seen- and you don't even physically see the carnage. The fact that videos like that one are readily available on youtube is a disgrace, and I don't think enough people talk about the real, psychological impact of seeing fucked up shit on the internet- it sticks with you. Before anyone asks, no I'm not gonna link or spread the video any further and I hope to god it's been taken down by now.
